Our Story

Margaret and Richard von Werssowetz

("von verse-o-vets")

A Realtor since 1991, Margaret has played a leading role in Charleston's real estate market as it has grown from "the old days" to today's vibrant international hot spot. She has earned a loyal following with her extensive knowledge of the area, her record of success, and her market savvy. She is famous for her zealous dedication to her clients, resulting in the majority of her business being past clients and referrals. But Margaret still loves working with new clients, including young people. She runs a fine tuned business operation with an extensive list of impressive transactions.

Consistently a top producer and member of the Realtors of Distinction, Margaret is highly respected by her peers and has been a long time member of the Professional Standards Grievance Committee as well as the Hearing Panel for the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors. Both Committees deal with ethics violations and arbitration. She now serves on the Professional Standards Hearing Panel for South Carolina Realtors, the umbrella organization for member boards throughout the State.

A native of the Lowcountry, Margaret has lived in Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa and Boston. Boston driving particularly exhilarated Margaret and she loved the city. She was a member of The Vincent Club, performing in many of their musical productions, and of The Junior League of Boston. For many years Margaret held office on the Board of The Women of the Church at The Church of The Redeemer in Chestnut Hill, MA. She also taught Sunday School, headed The Hospitality Committee, and served on the Compassion Committee. At The Somerset Club, where her husband was a member, Margaret served on The Entertainment Committee. At The Country Club in Brookline, Margaret often played tennis and shot skeet.

In 1989 Margaret, Richard, and their two small children returned to South Carolina and in 1991 cell phones were new and Margaret wanted one - so she became a Realtor. Voila, she had found her niche! The next years of success are history, as they say.

In Charleston, Margaret has served on the Boards of Hospice of Charleston, Charleston Day School, and The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of South Carolina. She created their newsletter, The Palmetto Post, and also served as Editor of their National Organization's Patriotic Services Newsletter. For three years Margaret was the Head of The Powder Magazine, the oldest municipal building in the South and possibly in the nation - c.1713. Under her leadership The Powder Magazine went from being a part-time tourist attraction to a premiere full time operation with a gift shop and stellar state wide educational programs. Margaret also has been a docent at The Gibbes Museum of Art, and is a member of The South Carolina Historical Society, The Charlestowne Neighborhood Association, and The Preservation Society of Charleston. She currently serves on the Board of The Heyward Family Association.

Margaret and her husband Richard live in the Historic District and are members of St. Philip's Church.

A native of Tennessee, Richard grew up in Texas. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then graduated with Distinction from Harvard Business School and promptly moved to Atlanta to find a southern wife. He did - Margaret - and they have been happily married for 40 years.

In Atlanta he managed large commercial construction projects. Then after several years with a manufacturing conglomerate in Tampa, they moved to Boston where Richard worked at Harvard Business School writing cases, many of which are still in use. He then taught "Starting New Ventures," a course close to his heart. Partner in a Venture Capital firm was next, and then starting a business in South Carolina and doing real estate development.

Richard is a Certified Investment Specialist and he excels at customer and marketing services, communication, analysis, and negotiation - all critical to success in Real Estate. He is, in fact, the perfect complement to Margaret's savvy sales skills.

Passionate about Charleston, Richard has served as President of The Charlestowne Neighborhood Association (the South of Broad neighborhood in the historic district) where he worked tirelessly to preserve the character and ambience of our special place. He has been intimately involved monitoring and advocating before the Board of Architectural Review, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Planning Commission. Among other community involvements, he was also President of The Association For the Blind, a member of The Library Society and the South Carolina Historical Society, as well as several social organizations. He and Margaret attend St. Philip's Church.

In addition, Richard has renovated two of his own homes and knows the ins and outs - and pitfalls - of renovation. If you want a savvy Realtor, Richard is your man!

I love the small town livability of this amazingly sophisticated but genteel community. Nice and highly capable people live here and nice and highly capable move here -- what a welcoming mix! Charleston is rhapsody by the sea.
