I received my training as a Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's cutting-edge Health Coach Training Program. During my training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world’s top health and wellness experts. My teachers included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; and many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities. My education has equipped me with extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and preventive health. Drawing on these skills and my knowledge of different dietary theories, I work with clients to help them make lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is partnered with Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY). I received my board accreditation as a Certified Health Coach (CHC) from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP).

Soothe Digestive Irritation with Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra)

Slippery Elm has a long history of use in American medicine. Did you know? George Washington and his men found sustenance in Slippery Elm porridge during their 12 days at Valley Forge. It helped soothe "nervous stomach" and provided nutrition when they ran out of food. Medicinal preparations (teas and syrups) were used to soothe irritations of the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines. In addition, the salve was used for treating wounds.

One of the few herbs approved by the U.S. FDA, Slippery Elm is a non-prescription drug that can help heal inflamed mucosa in the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is commonly used by holistic physicians for treating GERD, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease, IBS and common bouts of diarrhea and other inflammatory GI conditions.

Slippery Elm bark first appeared in the United States Pharmacopeia in 1820. Since then, scientific research has slowly emerged. Recent studies, combined with the historical medical uses of Slippery Elm, show a variety of medicinal applications for tea, capsules, powder, lozenges, and topical ointments. Within the bark, is a group of compounds called mucopolysaccharides, which become like loose jelly when they come in contact with water. This property allows the medicinal preparation to coat and soothe inflamed tissue in the body. The unique consistency of mucopolysaccharides allows it to add "smooth bulk" to fecal matter, which makes Slippery Elm useful for both types of IBS - constipation dominant and diarrhea dominant.

There are three doshas in Ayurveda—vata, pitta, and kapha. Spring is associated with “Kapha” which is from March-June. Spring microbes support a balanced immune system, energy, sleep, mood, blood sugar and much more.

Symptoms that your Kapha is out of balance include:
*excess mucous thick, white coating on tongue
*slow, sticky, sluggish bowel movements
*difficulty waking up in the morning
*feeling foggy, lethargic or heavy
*emotional overeating

Spring spices/ foods that will help bring Kapha into balance are foods that are pungent, bitter and astringent, like black pepper, cinnamon, cayenne, cumin, kale, collards, dandelion, spinach, and mustard greens; strawberries, cherries, and blueberries; fresh green peas, barley, quinoa, and millet.

Research has revealed that Earthing (also called grounding) has the potential to restore, preserve, and perpetuate improved health. Its impact on the body is both preventive and therapeutic. For some people, grounding can feel unusual in the beginning. There may be some tingling in the body, as is sometimes experienced when strolling barefoot along the wet sand at the beach or on a dew-moistened plot of grass in the morning. The tingling sensation, probably due to improved circulation and infusion with the Earth’s healing energy.

After starting Earthing, most people say they feel better and sleep better. Sometimes it happens dramatically and rapidly. Sometimes subtly and slowly. But, without any doubt, every person’s physiology changes when connected to the Earth.
