Independent Grounds Coffee House

When you are downtown you might see a few James Island Trojans working the Independent Grounds coffee cart. These students are learning job skills, practicing social skills, and customer service. You can find them at the MUSC Horseshoe or maybe Ashley Hall. If you see them, give them a fist bump and remind them how awesome they are! Independent Grounds Coffee House

Please consider sharing this Autism Advocacy.

Autism Services - People from around the word are calling to support ADA reasonable accommodations for the assessments of needs in ongoing practices. Preserving the understanding of what people need during the budget crises there should be no compromise to. Federal law protect these rights and I ask you consider sharing and calling in support.

My son is 4, so a long ways from working however he has Autism. I love that you are making a difference in the lives of those with Autism and would love to help you in any way that I can. As a parent of a special needs child, I do 30+ hours of therapy a week with him.... why? Because I like so many other special needs parents just want our child(ren) to function in society. You are truly making a difference.

After a very long break due to Baby Jack and the pandemic… I am THRILLED to announce that we will be back at MUSC the end of September! We cannot wait to see the students and customers ☕️💗☕️

A message from Laura, our Executive Director:

Many of you have noticed that @independentgroundscoffeehouse has been pretty quiet these late few months. In addition to the pandemic and the changing world around us, I had a baby! My hands have been full (and my nights very short!)

We are continuing our subscription plans over the summer and will get the cart out with our James Island Crew in the fall. We can’t wait to get back to MUSC to see all of our favorite regulars!

Stay tuned for updates. Have a wonderful summer filled with happiness, good health, and lots of delicious coffee.

Thank you all for your continued support!

- Laura

Our Story

In 1994, Laura Pickard completed a few high school volunteer hours at a respite center in Atlanta, Georgia. It was there that she met and fell in love with two young brothers on the autism spectrum. The following year on an airplane ride, she was seated next to a woman in search of an Applied Behavior Analysis Therapist in the Charleston, South Carolina area. It was then that she decided that special education was the professional path she wanted to pursue.

Twenty years later, Laura has taught in Africa, worked at Stanley Greenspan's Floortime School in New York, taught children with emotional disabilities and developmental delays at various special education schools, and was the school principal at a 12-month nonpublic special education school in Maryland. Through it all, one thing has remained true, her passion for working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities. Laura has watched as her student's lives have drastically improved with the development of early intervention programs across the country. She has also observed the school systems become better equipped with supporting children and their families as they progress through their school careers. But Laura has also seen her students complete their education and have little support once they've graduated from high school.

In 2014, Laura enlisted a group of dedicated team members and created Independent Grounds Coffee House, which serves to provide students with the proper skills to seek and maintain employment once they graduate from high school.
