Timeline Photos

Spanish Expression:

Del año de la pera.

Literal translation: to be from the year of the pear

English meaning: to be very old

This is one of those expressions you need to know but should use carefully.

If something or someone is very old and/or outdated, you can say it is "del año de la pera". Be careful how you utter this, because some people may be a little oversensitive and get mad.

Generally, though, using this expression is something quite normal for a lot of people in their everyday lives, and you will have a lot of situations where you will be able to use it. For example:

No te pongas esa falda. ¡Es del año de la pera! –
Don’t wear that skirt. It is very old!

Customs
Personal space
People in Spain and Latin America make more physical contact during conversations, so don’t be alarmed if someone touches you on the shoulder or stands very close while having a chat. The concept of personal space is not as strong as it is in other countries.

La Palabra del día: “lectura"
lectura (lekh-too'-ra.)
Word of the day
noun( interpretation; reading)

Guidelines:

-Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either.
Write Spanish sentences, but include the English translation as well.
-This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Tengo que terminar esta lectura antes de mi clase.

I have to finish this reading before my class.

2: No entiendo la lectura del cuento que nos explicó el profesor.

I don't understand the interpretation of the story that the professor explained to us.

To sum up - Resumen

If you are thinking about starting to learn Spanish…stop thinking!

Start as soon as you can!

The discipline required to learn Spanish is transferable

If you can develop the discipline to sit down and do 30 minutes of Spanish study
after a full days work, you will grow your willpower muscle.

If you can develop this keystone habit it will have a knock on affect in other areas
such as fitness, your job or your relationships with family and friends.

Fun Spanish phrases

“Hablando del rey de Roma”

Isn’t it amazing how as soon as you start talking about someone they manage to walk into the room? Or maybe you’re talking about some old nostalgic memories and one of your friends calls you that very moment?

What do we say in English? Probably something like, “speak of the devil!” or “your ears were itching, right?”

In Spanish they say “hablando del rey de Roma!” This translates to “speaking of the king of Rome.” It basically equates to, “hey, we were just talking about you.”

It’s not too surprising that this phrase is used more often in Spain than in Latin America, probably because of its close proximity to Rome and the role that the Romans played in Spanish history.

One of the best parts about travelling is discovering new customs and traditions.

In Latin America and Central America, cheek kissing is a universal form of greeting between a man and a woman or two women and saying goodbye with a kiss on one check.

Double cheek kissing
In Spain, people greet each other and say goodbye with a kiss on each cheek. Don’t be mistaken – these aren’t wet, sloppy kisses! In fact, these aren’t really proper kisses at all. People usually touch their right cheeks together and make a kissing sound, then repeat the process on the left side.

People don’t do this every morning when they come into work, but if you meet a friend for drinks or are introduced to someone new, the double cheek kiss is given to say hello and goodbye. Women are always greeted this way, but two men shake hands with each other unless they are relatives.

Spanish phrase:

Sin Pelos En La Lengua.

Quite literally, this phrase means: Without hair in your tongue.

Gross to think about, right? But funny, too.

What it actually means is someone outspoken that does not mind on telling the truth even when that truth sounds really bad. Someone who doesn’t bite their tongue.

#2 Benefit to learn a new language.
Sharpens The Mind
A study from Spain’s University of Pompeu Fabra revealed that multilingual people are better at observing their surroundings. They easily spot anything that is irrelevant or deceptive. They’re also better at spotting misleading information.

Why is it Important to Learn a Foreign Language?

goabroad.com What kind of question is that?! Either way, we have the answer. Here’s why foreign language study is SO important.

Ponte las pilas!

Fun Spanish Phrase.

This is one that I heard often when I was in high school. The teacher would walk by, see me gazing aimlessly into space and snap her fingers in front of me. She’d say, “Ponte las pilas!”

The direct translation of this phrase is, “put in your batteries.” Every time a teacher said this I chuckled to myself. The English equivalent is “wake up."

#1 Benefit to learn a new language.
Boosts Brain Power
A foreign language is a whole new intricate system of rules, structures, and lexis. Learning a new language means your brain has to cope with complexity as it makes sense of and absorbs new patterns. As our brains work out the meaning, endeavoring to communicate, we develop key learning skills such as cognitive thinking and problem-solving. Highly developed critical thinking skills are a significant benefit both personally and professionally.

Stuck at home? Now it's the perfect time to learn a second language, Spanish!
