The Charleston Chronicle

When the remains of 36 individuals were unearthed at the Gaillard Center in 2013, so were a mountain of questions: Who were these people? How did they come to be buried here? And most importantly—what are their stories? Two hundred and fifty years after they were buried, some of those questions have been answered; many revealed in a reinternment ceremony to honor their mark on Charleston’s history.

Leading up to that ceremony, nine Charleston County Schools were invited to participate in the recent Anson Street African Burial Ground (ASABG) Community Art Exhibition located in the Charleston Civic Design Center. The self-guided tour of artwork was facilitated by five local artists and La’Sheia Oubre, who is the Education and Community Engagement Coordinator for the Gullah Society. She is also a retired Charleston County School District (CCSD) teacher.

“As a team, we were trying to determine how to bring this project to the community,” said Oubre. “The students’ artwork hung on the same walls as the professional artists and brought to life these people and their struggles and their impact on Charleston.”

Redux Contemporary Art Center worked alongside the Gullah Society to provide the workshops and engage the community in the ASABG’s efforts. Redux utilized local community artists to engage the community from children to elders. Workshops were held at local schools and Redux; where students learned about archaeological and genetic research related to the Anson Street African Burials and created artwork using various visual media.

Jesse Koechling (@koechling) was born in Wheaten, Illinois into a family of photographers and artists. He holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. Koechling’s work draws inspiration from the solitude, in nature and the darkroom. His series, Noncorpa, places a strong emphasis on the exploration of the artistic process and draws divine reflection on the landscape. Each work represents disembodied moments woven together through the action of printing, tearing, marking, and/or drawing to create meaningful relics (cherished objects). His work thoughtfully references history and nature. He is currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York.⁣⁣

Richard McCabe (@rich_mccabe) is a curator, photographer and writer based in New Orleans. He was born in England and grew up in the American South. Since 2010, he has been the Curator of Photography at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (@ogdenmuseum). He has organized and curated over thirty exhibitions including: Seeing Beyond the Ordinary, The Rising, Eudora Welty: Photographs from the 1930s - 40s, Self-Processing: Instant Photography and New Southern Photography. ⁣

McCabe’s recent work includes an extensive collection of polaroids presented in two series, ‘Landstar’ and ‘Color Studies’. ⁣

McCabe’s ‘Color Studies’ demonstrate thoughtful experimentation of polaroid in reference to color theory, scale and abstraction. These powerful, well executed works leave the viewer with a meditative (perhaps transcendent) experience.⁣

McCabe’s first book of polaroids, Land Star was published by Ain’t Bad (@aintbad) in 2017. ⁣

Neal Casal (@nealcasal )is a guitarist, songwriter, and photographer. For the past twenty years, Casal has spent the majority of his time on the road as a touring musician documenting his experiences on/off stage with a Leica M-6 and Tri-X film. His photos have appeared on album covers for The Hard Working Americans, Gospelbeach, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. In 2008, Casal had a solo exhibition in Tokyo and Gallery Bauhaus. In 2010, Abrams Image published his first book, A View Of Other Windows. Rebecca Drolen (@rebeccadrolen) is an artist and educator living in Arkansas. Drolen’s work is concerned with how individuals visually assemble their identity. Hair Pieces, is a compelling series that explores our culture’s peculiar relationship with hair: how we love it in certain situations and are repulsed by it in others. It carefully balances built spaces, assemblage and performance, with large scale photographs. Drolen is Assistant Professor of/Area Head of Photography at the University of Arkansas (@uarkphotography). ⁣

Noelle McCleaf’s series, Evie Lou and Laura Jane chronicles the under-represented stories and experiences between aging medicine women: her mother Evie (a healer and survivalist) and her mother’s best friend, Laura Jane (a medical intuitive of the Blackfoot tribe). The work was created at The Center for New Beginnings in Myakka City, FL. This sacred land, owned by Laura Jane, is a source of spirituality for McLeaf’s subjects. It contains a labyrinth, an organic garden, and long pathways that lead to hidden altars and shrines. ⁣
