Check out this really cool door display that Cathy Fluhr DeHart made as an inspirational display for Easter!

We know that this year, Holy Week and Easter will look a bit different as we all worship from home. While we may not be able to gather together physically, we still have the opportunity and every reason to celebrate the Risen King!

This year, we would like to add some creativity to our Easter celebration on Sunday, and we would like your help. Consider doing one (or more) of the following to help enhance our Easter worship service.

1) We want to see how you and your family is creatively celebrating Easter. Submit pictures of any art, crafts, or doors, that are being decorated for Easter.

2) The flowering cross is another way we celebrate the empty tomb. If you have a green thumb and have any flowers in your garden that you would like to arrange for your own cross, take a photo and share it with us.

3) Lastly, we would like to compile a video of many of our church family proclaiming "Christ is risen!" If you would like to participate you can film a 5-10 second snippet of a video of you and your family saying "Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!" Make it fun and enthusiastic!

You can submit your photos or videos to our page, or email them to Rev. Katie at [email protected]. All submissions should be in by Friday, April 10th.

If you submit any photos or videos please grant us your permission to post them in the worship video.

We look forward to celebrating with you on Sunday!
Rev. Katie

[03/26/20]   Dear Members and Friends of Grace,

I hope that you are well, and that you are taking the appropriate actions to remain that way. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatic effects on all of us. This puts a premium on continuing to connect with each other by email, telephone, and social media. Many of you joined together for our first online worship service last week. We plan to continue to gather at that 10:00 AM Sunday to worship the Lord together. Some adult Sunday school classes are using Zoom to meet. (Check with your class leader.) And our brown bag dialogues continue on Zoom, too.

In addition to our Sunday service, we will have other opportunities to get together by internet, so stay tuned. Kids, be on the lookout on our YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/gumccharleston
We will offer a children's worship in addition to our regular worship.

In compliance with the Charleston City Ordinance that became effective at 12:01 AM, 3/26/2020, we will completely close the church for the duration of the order, which I believe is currently set at two weeks.

Reverend Katie and I can be contacted through phone, text, email, and social media (Katie on social media-not me). In addition, if you leave a message on either the church voicemail, or my personal office voicemail, we will get it. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and yours are doing.

As we go through this unbelievably stressful time, may we continue to support one another and Grace United Methodist Church with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness, as we worship and serve our risen Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Stay home, stay safe, and keep in touch. Let us continue to support Grace.

[03/17/20]   Dear Members and Friends of Grace UMC,

In order to fulfill our call to love our neighbor as ourselves, during this pandemic, we should all be listening to, and taking action consistent with, the guidelines and ordinances that have been published by our public health and government leaders. It is also the best way we can show Radical Hospitality to our community.

Accordingly, effective today, Tuesday March 17, 2020, we are suspending all on campus meetings, and gatherings, including Sunday worship services. This includes:

Grace Ringers rehearsal, OASIS, Acts of Grace, Brown Bag Dialogues, Wonderful Wednesday Dinner and Study, Chancel Choir rehearsal, Praise Team Rehearsal, committee meetings, such as Finance Committee, Weekday School Board, and Church Council, the Pop-Up Craft Fair, Sunday school, Children's Choir, both worship services, and youth group.

Grace Weekday School is already closed, consistent with the public-school system.

If I haven't listed one that you want to know about, assume it is canceled. The ceasing of on-campus group activities will continue until further notice.

The Church buildings will be closed for cleaning and disinfection during this time.

We are still the Church, and we will be identifying ways to stay in contact with each other, in prayer with and for one another, and in worship and study with one another. Stay up to date on our status, and our opportunities for worship and study through email, social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), or phone.

Of course, many of the costs of being Grace Church (utilities, insurance, payroll, etc.) continue through this time. Our support through our tithes and offerings is critical during this time. Online giving is a great way to tithe safely, or you can always mail your offering to the church office.

My friends, I encourage you to follow all of the guidelines from our national, state, and local authorities. These will help us to stay safe, even as we gracefully make space for others to be well, too. God will make a way.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Dick

[03/12/20]   Dear Members and Friends of Grace,

With the concerns over COVID - 19, while we don't want to overreact to the situation, it is appropriate for us to take action to address potential risks to all who worship, study, serve and fellowship at Grace.

We have the following plans and recommendations that we believe are consistent with what the CDC and DHEC recommend:

Pray for victims of this coronavirus, and for leaders trying to solve the crisis. Perhaps most of all, pray that God will be glorified in the way we all respond to this challenge!

Stay informed about the current recommendations by the CDC and DHEC for protecting your personal and family safety (frequent handwashing, avoiding crowds, social distancing, etc.).

If you are sick with cold or flu symptoms, or if you have other underlying medical issues that may compromise your immune system, stay home. Do not come to worship services and Sunday school. (Recorded sermons are usually available online at www.mygraceumc.org by Wednesday or Thursday of the following week.)

At least for now, we will remove Passing the Peace from our orders of service. (It is such a major part of who we are as a church, that we will return to it as soon as we think it advisable.)

We will sanitize offering plates, and ushers will use hand sanitizer before taking up the offering.

This is a good time to consider online giving, especially if you're unable to come to worship. The link to access online giving is www.mygraceumc.org/donate. Mailing your envelope is also an option, but no germs are passed using online giving.

At the conclusion of worship, Reverend Katie and I will be available near the front of the Sanctuary (near the Chancel rail), if anyone needs to speak with us, rather than at the entrance.

We will take some precautions in how we serve communion to minimize any risks to participants. Next celebrated on April 5th-Palm Sunday.

As yet, we do not plan to curtail our regular weekly schedule for meetings, study, fellowship, or worship. If it becomes prudent to do so, we will let everyone know. However, remember to care for your health in deciding whether to participate.

Thanks for being the faithful people that you are. Grace is the best.

If there are any more adjustments that we plan to make, we will let you know.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dick

The Brown Bag Dialogues Are Back

Last year those of us interested in discussing our Lenten sermon topics a little more deeply, brought our brown-bag lunches, and met in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesdays at 12 noon. We will offer that opportunity once again this year.

Our Sermon series will be on the book "Five Practices of a Fruitful Congregation" by Bishop Robert Schnase

[The five practices are: Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, and Extravagant Generosity.]

Beginning March 4th at 12:00 Noon, Pastor Dick will lead an informal discussion session about the previous Sunday's Scripture and fruit-bearing practice.

Bring your own lunch (hence the Brown Bag), a relaxed spirit, and your enjoyment of conversation, and we will fellowship together.

Books are $12.00. Call/email church office by Wednesday, 2/26 to have your copy ordered.

Want to make someone's day? Donate blood! The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd, this Sunday, February 9 from 8AM to 1PM and WE STILL HAVE 15 DONOR TIMESLOTS OPEN!
