Hello ALL! Just wanted to post an update on Greg Helms - 1994 Guard Summerall Guard Commander - who was badly injured last Thrusday, 3/26, while riding his bike on a training ride. Greg is still admitted at Memorial Hospital - Jacksonville. He is in a hard plastic, turtle shell style back brace, that has stabilized his spine. With help, he is able to sit up in bed, and has even been able to stand and walk to the bathroom. His entire left arm is immobilized because of his broken shoulder and wrist. He is also in a "walking boot" for his broken left leg, but thankfully his ankle isn't fractured, just badly sprained. Unfortunately, however, Greg is still in a considerable amount of pain due to his broken ribs. After speaking with Deanna (his wife, my wife's sister) last night, there may be a possibility of Greg to come home on Tuesday afternoon. In the meantime, the family will be helping Deanna re-configure the house to accommodate a wheelchair and establish a "base of operations" for Greg during what will be a very long road to recovery. With all that said, Greg epitomizes the definition of "resilience"! You don't make it through The Citadel, become a member of Junior Sword Drill, and become the commander of 1994 The Summerall Guards without a certain set of skills and character traits! Greg is a HARD MAN and a fighter; he WILL get through this! -Rob Fluhr '98 -1998 1A2 -1998 61MM

General information

Summerall GuardsThe Summerall Guards, a silent precision drill platoon from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, demonstrate The Citadel ideals of honor, integrity, loyalty, leadership, self-discipline and patriotism. Consisting of 61 members, the Summerall Guards are first class cadets who go through a rigorous physical training and initiation process and are chosen for their physical stamina and drill proficiency. membership is considered a high honor at the military college. The platoon's purpose is to exemplify, through a unique series of movements based on the old German close order drill, the exactness and thoroughness with which a cadet is trained. The drill, which has never been written down, is performed to a silent count. Each year's Guards take responsibility for teaching the next year's unit the precise drill. Created in 1932, this unit has performed nationally at Disney World, the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., Mardi Gras in New Orleans and St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, Ga. The platoon is named for General Charles P. Summerall, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and Citadel president from 1931 until 1953. In 2005, the Summerall Guards made their fourth appearance at a presidential inaugural parade. The Guards also participated in the inaugurations of Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953, Ronald Reagan in 1985 and George H.W. Bush in 1989.
