Here’s a short Mozart clip from the Charleston Adult Clarinet camp’s quartet rehearsal. The week flew by! I am so proud of these four for the immense progress both individual and as a group. We started the days with yoga, followed with a themed group class (tuning, reed working, improvisation, and technique), ensemble rehearsals. After lunch we would have our masterclass and ended the day with private lessons and practice. It is truly a different experience when you get the chance to immerse yourself in one thing for an entire week. Seems we made almost an entire year of progress. Reminds me of some of my best memories attending music festivals abroad as a university student. Until next year!

O Morro
See you tomorrow!

Putting together the weekly schedule and ensemble pieces for next week's Adult Clarinet Camp. If you were thinking of getting back to the instrument you played in band way back or you are looking to grow your skills this is your chance!

Good to be back.

This baby plays with real toys.
Here’s a clip of my student Karlee working on Piazzolla History of Tango...Today is the last day of lessons. What a whirlwind of a year! We held all our classes under this tent through the entire winter. Ready to put this page to a close, but still grateful to at least have the beautiful space to work. Hopefully institutions will prioritize outdoor learning and builders will catch on too. Nevertheless we will still be making beautiful music. Adios Señior Covid...no queremos bailar contigo nunca jamás!

thank you for the full orchestra performance in over a year! With distancing in the audience we were greeted with a full ‘distanced’ house ready for almost two hours of John Williams music. It had been so long since we performed together it felt invigorating...I could tell all of the musicians were playing with heightened sensitivity and was grateful to take part. Here’s to a concert a month for the next 5 months! See ya at the next :)

Gotta teach her to drive before she walks! Love you sista! Greatest Auntie to Nora!!! Happy Bday!!!
Performed from a safe distance thanks to . still putting an extra challenge but not able to stop us creatives from taking on a challenge and making the most of it! knows how to have a good time!

Start the new year with something you love! Peace #2021

An hour long concert outside at local retirement community went really well even through the boundaries of not being able to play face to face to my audience. Even through the glass the music it’s worth the extra effort!

Couldn’t be more grateful for my beautiful Sarah and our little gobbler Nora. We wish you friends and fam a happy Thanksgiving!

Maybe our last date before the little one joins us!

I spy little waves. No one out.
Students are working through etudes in the cistern. Beautiful weather makes the hard work easier.

“You take that bench I’ll take this one”. Back to in person lessons at the College of Charleston. Plenty of space to go around but can’t stop the hurricanes from blowing by!

Making the most of what I have. Luckally I’m only 8 miles from where I surf although it definitely was a challenge to do the ride with the board. The reward, seeing the sunrise on my bike. The challenge, riding back home after surfing a couple hours.
If a student has been playing their instrument for many years I need new ways to get them thinking about scales. Here’s a “game” where you alternate 4 notes at a time, and you can change the amount of notes with your student. It’s easy if you move your fingers along with your student but if you leave your hands still and pick up the next note by ear it’s even more effective. Scales are like vitamins we know that they are good for you so we take them. These games make them more tasty like gummy vitamins than capsules!
Are any of you still Teaching virtually? How do you feel about it? While I have started teaching some socially distanced lessons, at the college of Charleston I teach Clarinet which is still virtual for the next couple weeks.

Simple (Live)
There is nothing better in life than doing things one thing at a time. Whether that be cooking, and just focusing on the smell as you cook, or listening to someone talk and just listening, making music and not thinking about 100 other things at the same time... Stripping back the complexities and just enjoying the moment. Thats what this composition is all about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7r2AG6MqbU It is composed from a very basic melody with some harmonic notes interwoven. There is a contrasting section representative of all the distractions in life which returns to the smooth simple melody in the end.

Eurotrip (Live)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE6bBG4C9FM This album took around 6 months to record. Eurotrip was the hardest to nail down, and you would think since it was my first looping composition that I wrote it would be the easiest. Perhaps its because I have the highest standard for it. Compositions always evolve the more I perform them, and this one has evolved the most! All of the tracks are recorded live at St. Andrews Presbysterian Church in Charleston.

Goodnight.
Amidst this lockdown I’ll be teaching Zoom clarinet lessons whenever possible. It’s an amazing app and I’m grateful for the technology. Sharing recordings through chat and easy screen sharing are pretty cool features. Today we worked on major 7 arpeggios and a Django Reinhardt transposition. Here’s my student Henry warming up...you can’t hear the pure tone of the clarinet but it is enough to still be able to work together.

Corona virus is bringing the whole world together and reminding us what matters most. Well being. We will be well at the beach for many days to come. Love my mom and dad.
