Ascension Collective provides private speech/language therapy services and adaptive dance programs in Charleston, SC and surrounding areas. Ascension Dance Academy's mission is to give young girls and boys a world class education in the performing arts, with a concentration in dance.
Students will learn the fundamentals of dance technique, vocabulary, dance history and essential parts of the human anatomy to encourage and ensure a well-rounded dance education. Students will also learn the importance of etiquette, self-esteem building, as well as physical and mental health with a variety of workshops and classes offered as we prepare our students for success in all areas. Our future goals include providing our students with access to a wider range of various dance styles so that they are able to learn and grow in whatever style and area of dance they choose.
Operating as usual
No one really discusses the stress, lack of sleep, poor work-life balance, imposter syndrome, or countless other “negatives” that you will likely encounter as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
Plus, with teletherapy and the new norms of therapy in general, many of us just need some encouragement to help get us through these times.
Although not always said, the work we do is invaluable. And while you may be fighting feelings of burnout, confusion, or inadequacy, YOU ARE ENOUGH! Take time for yourself this week and reflect on the sessions, patients, or cases that have made your job worth it.
YOU GOT THIS!
That’s it, that’s the message.
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard my mom tell me this while growing up. I’ll take a guess and assume that’s why I am so passionate about advocacy, equity, and equality today.
America has been showing out quite a bit lately. From overt racism, to the performative actions of some organizations that claim to want to help push diversity, inclusivity, and equality for all, to making human rights a political agenda. These are all issues that we are facing daily, and if we are not careful, we can allow what we perceive as “routine” or “normal” to continue.
That is why, now more than ever, our words, actions, and intentions matter so much. We are now in a place where any silence or refusal to stand up for others is an unquestionable statement of compliance and agreement.
This week is a great time for introspection. Speak with family and friends that may have differing views other than your own. Now is not the time to be comfortable, silent, or allow others to speak for you. What type of message are you sending others? How supportive are you, or have you been to the people you encounter or serve daily?
Do not let your fire die. If you do not stand for something you will fall for anything.
Yesterday’s sermon by Pastor Mike McClure, Jr., of Rock City Church reminded me to check my circle.
Sometimes we all get complacent and comfortable. ✨GUILTY✨ In those moments, it is usually easiest to look for people that “pacify” or appease those feelings of complacency without realizing how harmful and counterproductive that is to our growth and progression. The goal is to surround ourselves with people who are going to push us, especially in moments of doubt or comfortability. Growth does not happen by staying the same.
This week, check your circle! Make sure the people around you are committed to pushing you, not pacifying you. And make the commitment to do the same for them!
May 1st marks the beginning of Better Hearing and Speech Month.

"During Black History Month, that's really what we celebrate. We celebrate the people who have shaped our heritage, and we remember those who have struggled for our rights and our freedoms and we reflect on how far we have come, and how much farther we have to go. And in the world of dance we have come such a very long way. After all it wasn't that long ago that major dance companies wouldn't even hire black dancers. We talked about that today, and the few dancers that were hired were asked to wear white pancake makeup to hide their face, from the audience. Some of the women that are with us today felt the sting of that discrimination first hand."
