Buist Academy for Advanced Studies

Buist Academy for Advanced Studies is an academic magnet school established in 1985. The school provides a rigorous curriculum emphasizing language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and foreign languages.

Congratulations to the Buist Academy Teacher of the Year, Mr. Marvin Conyers.

Mr. Conyers is a 6th grade math and science teacher. He sets high expectations for students in an active and engaging environment. His students continue to make tremendous academic gains each year.

Mr. Conyers continuously looks for ways to expand his knowledge, provide opportunities for students, and grow professionally. He is a team player and has earned the respect of parents, students, and colleagues. We are fortunate to have Mr. Conyers as a part of our Buist Academy family!

Thank you to everyone who brought non-perishable items for the food drive. We collected a total of 2330 items for the Lowcounty Food Bank.

The homeroom with the most items collected was Mrs. Averett's class. They collected a total of 349 items.

We love our community helpers! Thanks to the Charleston Police and Fire Departments for helping kindergarten students with their Community Helper Wax Museum.

Thank you to Governor Henry McMaster for speaking to 2nd and 3rd grade students about his role as governor. The students did an amazing job! They had many great questions for Governor McMaster. He ended his visit by reading the book, Dragons Love Tacos to Mrs. Hines's kindergarten class.

We truly appreciate Senator Marlon Kimpson for helping to make this visit possible for our teachers and students.


Ganna and the Siege of Leningrad

Congratulations to 8th grade student Sophia Leclerc for receiving 2nd place in the state-level National History Day Individual Documentary category.

Only the top two entries in every category at the state/affiliate level are invited to the National Contest. Sopha will be heading to the University of Maryland, College Park in June for the National Contest.

As a part of our living library series and in honor of Veteran's Day, Buist Academy welcomed original documented Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Eugene Richardson and original documented Tuskegee flight instructor, Lt. Col. Robert Hughes to discuss their experiences. Our students had the opportunity to hear from and talk to living legends. We thank them for their service and dedication to our country.

Mr. Garner has served for over ten years as a dedicated English Language Arts Teacher at Buist Academy. He goes above and beyond to support students and the entire Buist community. He constantly challenges all of us to think deeper and reflect on our actions.

Mr. Garner has been a faculty sponsor for Mock Trial, Spelling Bee, and the Quest Academic Competition. He is the co-creator of the school literary magazine, The Inkling. He has been a huge supporter of the fine arts department by helping behind the scenes and on stage. We are proud to have Mr. Garner as a part of the Buist Academy Family!

Mrs. Looney has served as K-4th grade school counselor at Buist Academy for the past four years. Having served as a classroom teacher and school counselor, she brings to this position over 20 years of experience in education. She has always gone above and beyond to support our school community. We know that she will continue to bring the same level of knowledge, enthusiasm, compassion, and dedication to her role as assistant principal.

Special Persons' Day was an Out of This World event! Thank you to ALL of our wonderful volunteers, led by Mrs. Katie Bunting and Mrs. Elizabeth Dickinson. Thank you to our faculty, staff and administration for supporting this fun-filled family day. Thank you to the Buist Foundation for sponsoring this event, which helps to build stronger school, home, and community relationships. Congratulations! Asher won an iPad for earning the most Karma Points in the state on the Algebra Nation-Algebra 1 Wall in September. Asher earned these points by showing peers across the state the first step to solving a problem or directing them to videos that explain related concepts. Algebra Nation is a math resource that provides digital content, hardcopy workbooks, and an interactive Wall where students can seek and provide math help to one another and get assistance from Study Experts and teachers who moderate the Wall. Great job, Asher!!!
