Our students have the opportunity to observe many different things on their nature walks. They recently spotted this beautiful dragonfly!
☀️
Dragonfly Fun Facts!
• They have been around for 300 million years
• Having a dragonfly land on your head is considered good luck
• People in Indonesia like to eat them for a snack
• Although they have 6 legs they do not walk very well - they are great flyers, however
• They eat mosquitos and gnats

We work to be intentional with all of our spaces including outside of our school. We have a picnic table and log seating for small group lessons, a composting project, a kindness rock project, and a student garden. 🌼

We often get asked how we teach a variety of ages and abilities in the classroom. One of the ways we do this is by utilizing Montessori materials. For example, the small bead frame is a wonderful learning tool. It can be used to teach a multitude of mathematic concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the decimal system. As the children progress, the materials grow with them. 🧮

Happy birthday Maria Montessori! 🎉🥳 Our students loved learning more about her today and even working together to make this beautiful piece of art. 🎨

To celebrate here are some fun facts you may not know:

* Maria Montessori was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy.
* Helen Keller was a good friend of Maria Montessori and helped Maria develop many of her sensory materials.
* Maria Montessori made her first trip to the United States in 1912.
* In 1915, a Montessori class was set up at the San Francisco's World's Fair. Maria Montessori won two gold medals for education.
* Maria Montessori left Italy during World War II. She moved to India where she and Gandhi often discussed the role of children and their education in promoting world peace.
* Anne Frank was a student in a Montessori school before she and her family went into hiding.
*. Alexander Graham Bell started a Montessori school for his grandchildren.
* Eleanor Roosevelt started a Montessori school.

Thank you Maria for being such an inspiration and for all that you have done for education!

We had such an amazing first week of school! A highlight was our students getting to see this banana spider and her baby. 🕸 Over half of our day is spent outdoors - every day! Outdoor education supports emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development. We cannot wait to see what adventures are in store for us this year!

With nearly 20 years experience in community based work, she has always had a passion for education and serving. Stefanie holds a degree in Classics from College of Charleston as well as a Masters in Teaching with a specialization in Cross Cultural Learning. She is thrilled to be a part of Elevate as they strive to educate a new generation on the importance of kindness, respect, and environmental awareness all while providing an academically rigorous curriculum.

Meet the Team: Ms. Darlena! ⭐️

Ms. Darlena will be joining the Elevate team in the upcoming school year as our Environmental Educator. This is a new part-time position to further invest in our commitment to outdoor and environmental education.

Ms. Darlena has lived in Charleston since 1980, moving here from So. California where she attended UCLA. She graduated cm laude with a BS in Psychology. She is the proud single mother of two children and has been working and teaching in the field of disabilities/mathematics/science for 25 years.

She has lived and worked on 2 organic farms and is a passionate environmental educator and activist. Within this new position, Ms. Darlena feels that she is 'living her life's work' as she 'embraces the world's children as her own'.
