Jefferson County Teen Court

[04/15/21]   Very proud of all the volunteers and defendants that stepped up tonight to work on the next case. Out of your comfort zone - you expand yourself. Y’all are doing it and I’m proud of you. Ms. Louanne Kramer of Berkeley Teen Court said it best tonight when she said, “I feel like a proud Momma.” I second that. Keep pushing yourselves. You are doing amazing things, growing so much, while you serve our community. Kudos to Jefferson & Berkeley Teen Courts for doing the hard work while supportng each other. We shall overcome. 🤗🌈✌🏽✌🏼✌🏽✌🏾✌🏿✌🏻

[04/07/21]   No Teen Court this evening, 4/7. We will meet again next week with new cases! Enjoy the spring weather and stay safe.

[03/31/21]   Teen Court meeting tonight @6:30 pm. (3/31). See you tonight!

[03/27/21]   Thank you to Ms. Mandy Winebrenner, Will Belmonte, and Ms. Vickers for inviting me to speak to Jefferson High Health class students concerning Teen Court. We largely focus on drugs and their effect on our community and families.

The class is a hard look at all drugs and how our kids are exposed. We know it’s not as easy as just saying no. We give students a strategy and encourage them to plan how they will handle that peer pressure when they face it.

We also offer help and hope for those that know about drug use first hand from family members and loved ones. All of us have been touched by drug abuse in one way or another. There is no shame in coming forward and asking for help.

It is my pleasure to speak to the kids about the pressures they face. Thank you again for the opportunity.

[03/27/21]   Have to give a shout out to all of our wonderful volunteers from Berkeley & Jefferson Teen Courts. We heard our first Berkeley Co case this week and the growth in our Teen attorneys was the highlight of this past year in Teen Court!!

So very proud of all the kids for the hard work and dedication they have put into this program. Some are here by choice and some are not. During covid, community service has been done within the court, meaning defendants have become attorneys.

It can be very intimidating attending the first hearing when defendants are new to the program - knowing that someday they will have to be an attorney to complete their service. The volunteers find it quite intimidating too. I have found that if you give teens a chance to step up, leave their comfort zones and push through their fears, they do it. Watching that growth is why we do it!

Overcoming the fear of speaking in front of others is tough but something we all need to learn as we go. You’ll never have a better advocate for yourself than you. Finding that voice can be difficult but we have seen it happen over and over the past 10 years.

I would like to thank Lou Anne Reynolds Kramer for joining us with her wonderful teens from Berkeley Co. We have joined our programs during the pandemic so that Berkeley CO’s program could get up and running which has meant double the fun for all of us.

I would also like to thank our team of dedicated adult volunteers for their guidance to the teens. Vince Edwards, Linda Romero, Linda Wright, Patrick Kratovil, Sgt. Ben Williams, Corporal DeSarno, and Jake Mills.

We couldn’t do it without you. Looking forward to more growth in 2021! Way to go everyone.

[03/24/21]   We will be having our first Berkeley County case hearing this evening @ 6:30 pm (3/24/21). Please sign on promptly at 6:25 pm so that we may get started on time. We will also be welcoming a new volunteer! Any attorneys that have questions about their role can contact me today via text. See you this evening! ~Ms. Ronda

[03/08/21]   Our next hearing is this Wednesday 3/10/21 @ 6:30pm. If you are an attorney, you may want to sign in early to put the finishing touches on your case. Jurors, please sign on at 6:25pm. See you Wednesday!

12/15/2020

I will follow Dr Gibson’s wisdom on this and cancel Teen Court tomorrow. I think all of could use a day.

[12/15/20]   I will give community service hours for those nice enough to shovel snow, go to store or any chores for elderly neighbors. REMEMBER - you must wear masks when speaking to our friends and neighbors. You should try to stay outside if possible to protect their health and your own. If you need to go inside to carry groceries, go back outside immediately.

Have the recipient write their name, phone number (I will be calling) with the number of hours you worked and chores performed.

Please be mindful we are in the midst of a pandemic. Safety at all times. Clear activities with your parents or guardians before seeking neighbors to help. Your parents or guardians get the final say as they are responsible for your safety as you go, as always.

I will check with recipients of your kindness to confirm.

Stay safe!

[12/15/20]   Teen court hearing tomorrow night!!! Wed 6:30 pm. Be prompt! No snow date! 😉. If you show up at 6:15 that works too. Stay safe in the snow!

The Monongalia County Teen Court

This is a sad day for Teen Courts in Wv. CW Mullin's program is the standard to which we all strive.

Sad day for the youth of Mon. Co. Just when our youth need more help, more structure, not less.

Pretty shocking that Arson charges don't even have to do Teen Court. No consequences. Got off scott free. That will teach'm!

At our National Conferences, CW is a star. This is a travesty. No juvenile accountability in Mon. Co. Sad day for Juvenile Justice in Monongalia Co, Wv.

Sorry for the bad news guys but I wanted to keep everyone updated.

Teen court is now officially closed until March 1, 2021.

That’s not even the bad news. The REAL bad news is that the teen court board of directors is talking about PERMANENTLY CLOSING TEEN COURT.

It was said that there isn’t a need for teen court since probation gives us very few cases. It has been said that there is too much of a time commitment for juvenile offenders to choose to come to teen court. (During this same meeting a probation officer admitted to giving no consequences to 3 juvenile cases of arson/vandalism. So obviously the time commitment for choosing to have your case dealt with at probation is ZERO)

I will be posting an email and phone number list very soon for all of the decision makers and influencers for this big decision.

What I need from you is to share this information with everyone you can so we can make sure these people know why they should keep our teen court in Monongalia County.

Please do what you can to tell your story about teen court and let these people know why we should be allowed to continue to be a positive influence to the youth in Monongalia County.
