February in Review
I never liked reading growing up but I have become an avid reader lately and itβs become a great way to relax and just forget the worldβs worries. Inching towards my goal of reading 100 books by end of the year. I read different genres this month, some books were great and some were mediocre, but thatβs what reading is all about.
Here's a little recap on what I've read:
* Where the Red Ferns Grow - 3.5
* Ugly Love - 5
* One of Us is Next - 2.34
* The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - 4.2
* The Beauty in Breaking - 3.7
* The Turn of the Key - 3.5
* All the Missing Girls - 2
* Somebodyβs Daughter - 3.5
What has everyone been reading? Read some from my list and let me know what you think?

What is Read Across America Day?
Launched in 1998 by the NEA, "Read Across America Day" was created as a way to encourage children to read. It later developed into a year-round program, with special celebrations in March.
"This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone," the NEA website for the program says.

This is just my personal review:
I was reading this book to motivate one of my students because they are reading it for school. The Giver is basically about utopian society that is seen through the eyes of a sensitive 12 year old boy. It does teach you that there can be a community where there is no pain, no crime, no greed and no unhappiness. I only recommend this book after a parent reads it and thinks it's okay for their child to read it. Discuss the book with your child as they are reading it because it is very important for them to understand everything that is going on in the book. Without no follow up discussion, this book will leave them with confusion!

I have decided to start a virtual or in-center book club. We will pick a book each month and read it together. The books are accessible on Kindle, local library or can be ordered on Amazon.
For September we are going to be reading:
Ivy and Bean (book 1) by Annie Barrows (grades 1st - 3rd)
Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall (grades 4th - 5th)
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (grades 6th - 8th)
Your child doesn't have to participate but I believe it will be a good motivation for them to read and we can meet once a month virtually or at the center and discuss the book. There will be set goals for each week and I will check up on them weekly.
Let me know if you have any questions and if your child would like to participate and for further details. I can be reached at 202-731-3147!

When my niece was about 3 years old, I had an idea of making her a sight word board.. we would take 5 words everyday and work towards them. She picked up on them really fast and enjoyed learning them too. Great idea even if your kids are in 1st it 2nd grade, you can always keeping adding the words to the list. π©π½βπ«ππ
