One of the biggest assumptions is that the lies you believe are true.

03/02/2022

Ele me acordou.

o professor, uma hora eu me daria conta do erro.

Provavelmente jogaria a culpa nele:
• “Você só me critica.”
• “Você não me entende.”
• “Você não me ajuda na minha carreira.”
• “Você me desapontou.”

Me conta 👇

Self-acceptance is not only difficult to cultivate within ourselves but is also often confused with other terms such as self-love, self-worth, and self-esteem. So, what really is self-acceptance? And, what gets between us and learning to accept ourselves, flaws and all?

True self-acceptance is an active process of embracing who you are, without any qualifications, conditions, or exceptions (Seltzer, 2008). Although low self-acceptance has been linked to a number of poor psychological outcomes such as anxiety and depression (Chamberlain & Haaga, 2001), little is known about self-acceptance, what we can do to build it and what barriers keep us from developing a loving relationship with ourselves.

Despite the emerging nature of research on self-acceptance, we do know that negative thoughts or judgments about ourselves, being self-critical, or setting high expectations for ourselves can have a profound impact on our level of self-acceptance.

We also know that putting our armor up and fearing vulnerability can hinder connection and leave us feeling lonely and unworthy (Brown, 2010). Social comparison with others who may be in a better financial, social, or employment position can also see us drifting away from accepting our true and loveable selves.

So, what can we do about this? Well, a critical first step is to bring awareness to these and other barriers to self-acceptance that you may hold. Experiencing self-acceptance is a difficult process without a prescribed road to follow. Nevertheless, recognizing what is holding you back from accepting yourselves may help you assess these barriers and bring you closer to self-acceptance.

What barriers prevent you from connecting to and accepting yourself?

Feelings are valid no matter what … feelings are also like visitors in that they usually find a time when it is right for them to leave. So be patient and accepting of your feelings, of your child’s feelings too. 💖🌟💖

Kids get dysregulated easily. So do parents. It’s not intentional. It's how the undeveloped and the triggered brain works.

Big emotions, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, needs and behavior can feel alarming sending the nervous system into threat mode.

Children learn how to move from insecure to secure with a connected, nurturing adult, repeatedly, until maturity.

Adults practice returning to secure with a trusted other or reconnecting to their adult-self repeatedly, this is maturity.

The more often a child experiences your security & nurturing in times of distress, the more easily they grow to secure & nurture themselves and others.

We are hardwired for connection and compassion. Children need it to feel safe and parents need it to maintain influence. We need it to feel securely attached and safely authentic.

We all need relational safety to grow in emotional resilience.

When should you explore couples counseling?

We typically feel most confident in areas of our lives where we have support, and our relationships are no different. Research shows that couples who seek help early have the best chance of thriving even during difficult times. It can be especially helpful to seek guidance for yourself and your loved one during big life events and transitions.

Working with a trained professional is an investment in your relationship and overall well-being. On the Gottman Relationship Blog, Terri A. Ammirati, LCPC (Ammirati Counseling) offers tips to help you seek support for your relationship: https://bit.ly/2Zv2UW5
