-- The late Kalisa Moore, the Foundation’s acclaimed "Queen of Cannery Row," insisted in the 1990s that the Cannery Row Foundation should host that adobe for this annual event – and they’ve done so ever since.
-- Other Cannery Row Foundation volunteers, called the "Up-Town Row Rats" by long-time, now retired CRF founder and President, Michael H**p, will pass out Cannery Row Foundation information about its Steinbeck connection.
-- Founded in 1983, the mission of the Cannery Row Foundation is “to capture, communicate and share the history of Cannery Row and its contemporary relevance.
-- “We're creating a bright new path to connect the story and traditions of old Monterey and Cannery Row,” says current CRF president Gregor Calliet, “with the aspirations of those working to build on this foundation to create vibrant historical and cultural experiences for all those who live, work, visit and play here. We see CRF as a vital catalyst for this process.”

Michael Kenneth H**p dba The History Company announces exclusive representation of the Fry Collection of Western Flyer Navigational Artifacts for acquisition, preservation, and
perpetual public exhibition by the City of Monterey at the Western Flyer’s Home Port of Monterey. A Naming Donor is sought to acquire the collection at its fair and equitable value from the Fry Family and pass-through/transfer ownership of the iconic historic collection to the City of Monterey for permanent preservation, maintenance, promotion, and public exhibit of the collection—with the Naming Donor clearly and prominently identified with the Collection in perpetuity.

It is the intent of the Fry Family that the Collection should be permanently located at the Port of Monterey, in a museum structure at the site of the Western Flyer’s home port—intact as a collection, not to be removed from perpetual public exhibit at Monterey or broken up with individual artifacts re-sold separately to other parties (and never seen again).

The Fry Collection of Western Flyer Navigational Artifacts—consisting of the flying bridge’s brass wood-handled wheel, the two-piece brass helm stand, the brass articulated shift control lever, the flying bridge boxed compass, and the main deck house compass—has been appraised by Roger Ottenbach Historic Maritime Appraisals. The detailed and illustrated Appraisal concludes a reserve auction value of $68,704.00 and is available to serious inquiries. Bids will be received commencing at 10 AM, Wednesday, January 10th.

Fisherman's Wharf Monterey - Whalefest Monterey 2016

Hope to see you on Saturday, January 22nd, when I help start the Whalefest at Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey. At 11:00 AM I'll be presenting the historical background and update of the "Saga of The Western Flyer"—the world-famous Monterey purse-seiner chartered by John Steinbeck to the Sea of Cortez in 1940 with pioneer marine biologist, Ed Ricketts. From Steinbeck's narrative portion of the publication of the "Sea of Cortez" by both men (1941) came "The Log From The Sea of Cortez" by Steinbeck in 1951. It's mutually developed conservation message was 2 decades ahead of Rachel Carson's classic "Silent Spring."

The history of the Western Flyer charts its participation in the devastation of a succession of major West Coast and Pacific Northwest fisheries before her near demise before rescue and restoration (in progress) in Port Townsend, Washington—by marine geologist John Gregg and his brother, Andy. In a spectacular irony, upon completion, the most famous fishing boat in the world will return to home-port Monterey as a seagoing classroom for inspiring youth into the marine sciences.

See you Saturday at 11:00?
