We’re proud of our CCSD family’s dedicated teachers … and every week, you’ll get to know one of them better through a Q&A posted here.

Cherokee County School District partnered with North Georgia RESA to provide a cohort for select CCSD teachers to participate in the Dyslexia Endorsement. The Dyslexia Endorsement was created in response to Senate Bill 48 to equip teachers with the knowledge of the Characteristics of Dyslexia and the ability to respond to students’ needs. For the 2023-23 cohort, elementary schools were invited to send one teacher through the 9-month-long endorsement program, which was led by Dr. Jennifer Reynolds, CCSD Learning Support Specialist.

Congratulations to the following participants for the completion of the Dyslexia Endorsement program: Erin Delaney, Arnold Mill Elementary School; Taylor Wigington, Avery Elementary School; Julie Miles, Ball Ground STEM Academy; Casi Schmidt, Bascomb Elementary School; Erica Fey, Boston Elementary School; Andrea Trella, Carmel Elementary School; Kara Harville, Clark Creek STEM Academy; Kari Brooks, Clayton Elementary School; Leigh Schwarzman, Free Home Elementary School; Melissa Manley, Hasty Fine Arts Academy; Danielle Gantt, Hickory Flat Elementary School; Rebecca Thurman, Holly Springs STEM Academy; Tara Tucci, Johnston Elementary School; Mendy Bixler, Knox STEM Academy; Lyndsey Bevill, Liberty Elementary School; Kinsley Welch, Macedonia Elementary School; Dr. Lorie Mick, Mountain Road Elementary School; Meg Martin, Mountain Road Elementary; Leanna Schneider, Oak Grove STEAM Academy; Amy Thompson, R. M. Moore STEM Academy; Jeannie Cordaro, Sixes Elementary School; and Brenda Palmer, Woodstock Elementary School

The Dyslexia Endorsement will be offered again in 2023-24 with an emphasis on middle and high schools.

The Cherokee County School District is celebrating its School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists as part of the statewide appreciation week for these professionals.

Sixty-five speech-language pathologists – or SLPs, as they also are known –are highly trained professionals responsible for evaluating and treating CCSD students who have difficulty with communication.

Students who struggle with language also may struggle with understanding instruction, expressing what they know, or with making friends… but the work of speech-language pathologists assists them in overcoming these challenges.

“I know the positive difference these professionals make in the lives of children. I appreciate them, and hope you will join me in thanking them for their service,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “From teaching a child to say her first words to teaching a significantly impaired child to ask for help using a communication device, their contributions to the lives of students with these special needs are tremendous and long-lasting.”

Can’t believe we’re already in October and thinking back to how fun September was here at the Kingdom! For Dot Day, right before break, students explored the science of chromatography, the technique used to separate mixtures. They did a fun experiment with Ms. Hicks in the media center where they observed their “dot” going through chromatography and made predictions about what would happen based on different colors.
