Mrs. Menard's 5th Grade Class - Bryant Elementary
The first week of school went very well. We spent a lot of time discussing routines that will help us use our class time efficiently and also provide a great learning environment.
Each week there will be a test over four vocabulary words known as Words of the Day. We will spend time on these words each day discussing synonyms and antonyms for them and also talking about situations we might use them in speaking and writing. Your child will have a copy of the words and meanings in their class folder to use for study.
Every other week there will be a test on Friday called a "root word test." I will introduce a Greek or Latin root and spend two weeks discussing a group of 10 words that contain that root. Last Monday we began the study of the root "ped." We will have a test over the "ped" words this Friday.
We also are working on learning the four kinds of sentences. You should find information about these in your child's folder. We will have a test this Wednesday!
Remember, if you have not joined Class Dojo please do so! I am sending home a letter tomorrow to help you get signed up if you have not done so.
Thank you for all that you do to help make your child successful each and every day.
What a wonderful treat I received today from a student! A pan of homemade cinnamon rolls! I am not waiting until breakfast tomorrow to have one!
[08/07/15] Post a message to this page and you are entered to win a homework pass and Sonic gift card. Only eligible if you are a student in my 2015-16 class! Looking forward to a wonderful year!!!
[06/19/15] I know my fifth graders are moving on to middle school, but I would like to get the word out that all school supplies for BES students will be provided for them next year. Parents do not have to purchase anything except maybe a backpack if needed.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas break. I know I did, Go Hogs!
We will continue with Words of the Day and root words each week. Remember we test over the four Words of the Day every Friday and test over the root words after two weeks of study. We will continue working on fifth grade language skills and review fourth grade skills as well.
We will begin reading a book titled, 10 Days Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The author, David Colbert, has chosen the ten days he feels that led Dr. King's life down the path it took. While reading the text students will gather evidence to support the idea that Dr. King was a hero. We will then write an essay using this evidence.
Looking forward to seeing everyone back at school in the morning.

Great job BES float committee! Who is that smart young man posing as a doctor?
[09/15/14] This should be progress report week. Our district is now using e-school. You should have received last week a letter giving you details how to log on to this site. I have been putting in grades each week, but just learned today that there is a button I need to push for you to see them. If you are not seeing my grades(language and spelling) please let me know.
[09/08/14] Can't believe we are already starting week four. This week we will: begin studying the roots- man and manu, have Words of the Day- Week 3, begin studying introductory elements , review quotation marks in dialogue, using a good lead, temporal words, sensory details and concrete words in writing.
[09/02/14] I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. This Friday we will test over the root word, "ped." We will continue working on similes and metaphors, begin learning about using a comma with an introductory element, and analyze the features of narrative writing. There will not be Words of the Day this week.
Week 2- This week we will be begin the study of the root, ped. We will test over the word list in two weeks. I suggest that students work on one word each night.
We are also working on the academic vocabulary word, analyze. This verb is used 75 times in the Common Core standards. Students need to know what they are expected to do if asked to analyze something.
Working on finding similes and metaphors in song lyrics.
We had a good second day today. I will work diligently over the next couple of weeks to help my students understand that they must figure out a system or place for keeping homework and other important papers. If your child has not purchased a student agenda/planner you might consider doing so as all assignments need to be written down.
This week we are working on similes and metaphors, kinds of sentences, vocabulary, and dialogue.
Friday we will have a test over the "Words of the Day."
[08/19/14] I want to welcome those of you who have joined our class page. Today went very well. Thank you for all that you do before they come to me.
