The local Idaho ANG recruiters and 2 gyms (CrossFit E3, Eagle ID and Principia CrossFit) have come together to help get a fitness challenge (AMRAP Style) event up and running in an effort to support the TACP Association. You ever heard these phrases before? These phrases center around the idea that we don’t have to be perfect to do great things.

This is especially true in the nutrition world. You don’t have to be perfect every day to see good results. And chances are, if you ARE perfect every day, you’re not going to last very long.

That’s why we try to help our nutrition clients to focus on the 80/20 rule. We strive for on-point nutrition about 80% of the time, with about 20% of the time set aside for LIFE.

Unless you’re trying to reach a specific body fat % or entering a physique competition, this 80/20 approach makes good eating something that is SUSTAINABLE long term.

These three elements make up the triangle of awareness: Performance, Aesthetics, and Longevity.⁠

If you've decided aesthetics is the most important element to you, it means your performance and longevity will need to take a back seat.

Shredding fat puts a lot of stress on the body, which means you may not perform as well in your activities, and you may not feel your best day after day.

But if looking good is very important to you (and I'd say it is very important to a majority of people), you need to be eating and training in a modality that best supports your physique goals, which will be different that someone looking to live as long as possible or perform at the top of their sport.

Having clarity around your ACTUAL goal, what you value most, will lead to quicker path to success. So give it a try. Where would you plot yourself within the triangle? Is your training and nutrition in line with your goal?

Three tips for avoiding the post holiday party hangover:

1. Bring your own drinks.

By bringing your own drinks, you can ensure that the drinks you are having are ones that sit well with you. Plus, you can easily ration out how much you intend to drink at the beginning of the night, and just stop when you run out of your stash.

2. Make it a spritzer.

We all know we need to drink water between drinks, but many of us forget to. By adding a bubbly water to your beverage, you can get some of the hydration you need to avoid the nasty hangover. Sparkling wine and cocktails are easy to work with, or you can turn a beer into a shandy!

3. Eat something!

Don't let all of your calories come from alcohol. Make sure to eat some food before going to bed, ideally something with a good ratio of carbs, fat and protein.

BONUS Tip: Don't drink. You don't HAVE to drink if you don't want to. And it is the only way to guarantee you don't wake up with a hangover the next day.

Macronutrients are a topic we get asked a lot about in the gym, which makes sense given how important macro tracking can be for physique goals.

Whether you are trying to gain weight or lose it, you’re going to need to focus in on your macros.

Nutrition tracking works best by breaking the daily fat, protein, and carbohydrate targets down into meals and snacks.

Just like you might break a 2,000 calorie day like this:

Meal 1: 500 calories
Snack: 250 calories
Meal 2: 500 calories
Snack: 250 calories
Meal 3: 500 calories

You can also break down a macronutrient goal in the same way.

For example, a goal of 150g protein, 200g carbs, and 65g fat could break down like this:

Meal 1: 36g protein, 50g carbs, 16g fat
Snack: 21g protein, 25g carbs, 8g fat
Meal 2: 36g protein, 50g carbs, 16g fat
Snack: 21g protein, 25g carbs, 8g fat
Meal 3: 36g protein, 50g carbs, 16g fat

Suddenly, you’re no longer worrying about eating 150 grams of protein, but instead, just 36 grams at a time, which is much easier to wrap your head around.

If your goal is to perform as optimally as possible, then it is going to come at the expense of your longevity and aesthetics.

That doesn't mean you're going to look bad or die young, but it does mean that you might not be able to have a shredded 6 pack year round or feel your best day to day.

It is important to have clarity around your goals so you can be sure you actually WANT the thing you are chasing. That's one of the reasons we love the triangle of awareness!

The most common thing we hear people say when asked why they want to join a gym is to look better, perform better, and live better.

These three elements make up the triangle of awareness: Performance, Aesthetics, and Longevity.

Each element is important in its own merit, but the path toward each is quite different. The person trying to perform the BEST in their sport will need to eat and train differently than the person trying to look their absolute leanest, and different still than the person trying to live well as long as possible.

Maximizing one element must come at the sacrifice of the other two elements.

Now, it IS possible to improve performance, aesthetics, and longevity all at the same time. However, working on all three simultaneously will yield much slower results and eventually, will plateau all together.

So where does your goal lie within the triangle of awareness? That answer should determine the way you eat and train. Once you have clarity around your goal, we can lay out the path to get you there.
