Fall is synonymous with pumpkins, but have you ever wondered why we're all so obsessed with these gourds? 🎃

The main reason people feel such a strong connection to pumpkins has to do with the nostalgia we feel about the fall season itself.

Because of the pumpkin's prevalence in fall activities, you associate pumpkins or pumpkin-filled baked goods with the memories that the fall season creates each and every year.

Pumpkin Spice Latte anyone? ☕

While extracurricular activities are a factor in college admissions, they are definitely not the most important—academic performance is!

Course selection is a very BIG part of college admissions, so don’t let your teens drop out of a higher-level course if they are struggling. Get tutoring help with Huntington as early in the school year as possible.

When it comes to extracurriculars, colleges prefer quality over quantity. Admissions officers want to see that students are involved in activities that really matter to them.

So, instead of telling your children to sign up for every club or activity possible, encourage them to choose extracurriculars to which they will be committed. It’s better to be engaged in and excited about three or four activities than it is to be a member of eight or nine.

Not all high school students know exactly what they want to study in college and do for the rest of their lives.

While it’s fine to go to college undecided on a major, it’s also okay to choose an option that is broad and versatile and will keep multiple doors open down the road. 🚪

Here are five college majors for undecided students that will give them options:

1. Business
2. Biology
3. Liberal Arts
4. Computer Science
5. Communications

To read more about these options, check out our blog post: https://bit.ly/3xQ9eWj

Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer! It has far-reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others.

Living your life with gratitude helps you notice the little wins, such as the bus showing up right on time or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning.

Helping your children practice gratitude can make them notice the little things too, like doing better from exam to exam, being able to solve a problem on their own, or the kindness from another sharing a toy or snack.

Here are three ways to practice gratitude with your child:

1. Set an example - We provide the blueprint for what our children say and do. Expressing gratitude yourself through words, writing, and acts of reciprocity are all ways to teach children how to become grateful.

2. Spend quality time - Believe it or not, children and, yes, even teens, like being with their parents. Sharing a lot of quality time with your children teaches them the language of love—life’s greatest gift. Savor every moment together, big and small, and rid yourself of distractions, including your smartphone.

3. Get involved - Giving and gratitude go hand in hand. Look for ways to volunteer together or let your child pick a charity to give back to.

How do you practice gratitude with your child?

Avianna’s parents recognized that she was falling behind in reading due to the impact of the pandemic. When they enrolled her in Huntington in February 2022, she was reading at a second-grade level even though she was in fourth grade. After only eight months of tutoring, Avianna’s MAP assessment scores show her reading is in the 77th percentile for her grade, and she is in the 91st percentile in growth over the past year! We are SO proud of Avianna’s hard work and achievements! 🎉📚

Avianna, we look forward to helping you finish elementary school strong and transition to middle school successfully.

Here's a fall science fact for ! Fall leaf colors depend on how much sugar is in the leaves. 🍂

These colors are caused by certain pigments in the leaves, and different kinds of trees produce different pigments.
When you notice leaves that are purple and red, that's caused by the "anthocyanins" pigment, which is only produced in the fall when sugars are trapped in the leaves.

Lots of dry weather and sunlight will lead to more sugars in the leaves, meaning the leaves will be brighter red.
What is your favorite fall leaf color to see?

🧠 Your child relies on memory to learn, but there are different types of memory that come into play during different school situations.

Working memory is defined by Psychology Today as “a form of memory that allows a person to temporarily hold a limited amount of information at the ready for immediate mental use.”

It is critical for all kinds of mental processes and for learning new things.

There are several ways to build and strengthen the working memory: reading, playing memory-based games, breaking larger tasks into more manageable chunks, or even having your child repeat things back to you.

For more tips on improving your child's working memory, read the full blog post here: https://bit.ly/3xzcNjA
