Boise State Concurrent Enrollment

Comments

Boise State University is proud to celebrate 56 local students who graduated with their associate degree and 34 students who completed the “sophomore start” concurrent enrollment option.

Boise State Concurrent Enrollment program has provided Treasure Valley students the opportunity to take college courses while in high school for the last 23 years. Concurrent enrollment courses prepare high school students with the skills and academic readiness they need for a more seamless transition to college.

Last year, high school students across Idaho completed over 30,000 university credit hours through Boise State Concurrent Enrollment.

Congratulations to these awesomstudents!

For over 20 years, Boise State University's Concurrent Enrollment has been a leader in offering quality dual credit classes. High school students earn Boise State University and high school credit simultaneously through Concurrent Enrollment with collegiate-level courses offered at their high school.

This year, with disruptions brought on by COVID-19, many courses had to shift online, impacting lab curriculum for students along with other financial difficulties. Students enrolled in the introductory Biology 100 and Accountancy 205 classes could no longer rely on high school labs. With the biology and accountancy classes, the lab content is cloud-based, allowing students to receive their content with an access code.

Boise State Concurrent Enrollment decided to cover the costs of accountancy and biology labs, saving students and their families anywhere between $20 and $90. Providing accountancy and biology labs at no cost ensures that any enrolled student receives a quality experience and curriculum resources regardless of course modality.

Through a partnership with the Idaho Digital Learning Alliance, Concurrent Enrollment began offering Chemistry 100 Concepts of Chemistry to high school students four years ago. Part of the requirements for the online chemistry course was a $20 lab kit. Concurrent Enrollment decided to pay for the lab kit upfront to maintain the quality and consistency of labs for all students, regardless of financial means.

The decision to cover these costs for students alleviated stress over having to declare financial hardships. With lab costs covered and other curriculum shifting to online delivery, fall semester enrollment increased by 127 percent compared to 2019.

The goal of Concurrent Enrollment is to help high school students experience university curriculum, build their self-confidence and thus prepare them for their future university life.

Boise State University is delivering all in-person classes remotely on Friday, March 13, in an effort to gauge and improve the university’s ability to serve its students during a period of unexpected disruption.

The test includes:

🔹 Undergraduate and graduate for-credit and not-for-credit classroom classes

🔸 Lab-based classes

🔹 Studio-based classes

🔸 Field-based classes

All other functions of the university remain open and will function as usual, including:

🔹 Testing Center

🔸 Albertsons Library

🔹 Boise State Bronco Shop and Bookstore

🔸 Boise State University Health Services

🔹 Boise State Recreation

🔸 Boise State Student Union

🔹 Boise State Online classes

🔸 Boise State Concurrent Enrollment/dual-credit classes in high schools

🔹 Clinical activities in healthcare settings, Boise State University College of Health Sciences

🔸 Student teacher activities in school district classrooms, Boise State University College of Education

In addition, all university divisions and departments are being asked to discuss the effective protocols and challenges of maintaining essential operations over an extended period of disruption. University leaders will gather Friday afternoon to discuss what is learned and what decisions should be made to best preserve the health and safety of our campus and community.

These discussions will inform a great many questions and concerns that are shared across campus as the state and nation continues to strive to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The latest campus information on the virus can be found at go.boisestate.edu/coronavirus-response.

If you have any questions about Friday, please contact your supervisor or faculty instructors.

Our Concurrent Enrollment Story

Concurrent Enrollment started with a mandate from the State legislature in 1998. We are celebrating 20 years of providing hundreds of students the opportunity to earn University credits while still in high schools. Students and instructors use Boise State curriculum, books, and grading scales. The classes are recorded on a Boise State transcript. Most of the classes offered for dual credit are from the general education core, applicable to any degree a student chooses upon entering a college or university. Credits are transferable to most other accredited colleges and universities in Idaho and across the United States.
