Hello Chris! I was so surprised when your photos from Aspen came across my FB page. Here are a few more from that wonderful summer in 1979. Cheers!

[06/29/21]   Read what students have to say about training at the Kent Institute:

"World-class instruction, fantastic training partners and a welcoming learning environment. Chris Kent's Jeet Kune Do is an investment in one's self. The best investment I'ver ever made."
Bo Wahl

“The way you can explain a concept 4+different ways so everyone can understand it, then challenge us physically and mentally with our safety being paramount, you set the bar high, I never did find another class as I moved throughout the west that was even close to the quality of instruction I received from you. This was truly a highlight of my life.”
Robb Jones
Member of the first CKJKD class in Boise

"CKJKD is a great place to train. Family environment and non-pretentious. World-class instruction and continual learning; no matter how long you have trained."
Ann Wilson

“There are many places to train martial arts out there, but if you’re looking to training in an environment that's authentic and genuine, then look no further than Chris Kent JKD. Sifu Chris will bring out the best in your abilities, whether you are a novice practitioner or an experienced martial artist. All curriculum is clear, specific, focused, direct and to the point. Sifu Chris’s depth of knowledge and understanding is clear from the moment you step foot in the studio. His patience and willingness to teach are unparalleled in my opinion.
Andy Tapella

“My wife, Gena, and I moved to Boise in 2018. I had searched for a Shotokan Karate dojo where I could continue training. There were none available so I expanded my search for other arts. That’s when I discovered Chris Kent’s Jeet Kune Do, and our lives literally changed. Always a big fan of Bruce Lee, I learned that JKD is much more than just another martial art style. In fact, it’s not a style at all, but the philosophy and science of expressing oneself in combative form. Gena joined with me and it has been the best experience of our lives. Sifu Chris is not simply an instructor. He is a coach and a mentor. His ability to read his students and then teach each one of them according to how they best learn is like having a private lesson each time we go to class. Over the last three years we have been learning under Sifu Chris we have discovered the potential we have as individuals, and have witnessed the leaps and strides we have made in our personal growth. Jeet Kune Do is not simply a martial art, but a lifestyle. It transcends into every area of life. Sifu Chris has been studying and teaching JKD for almost fifty years, and Genas and I feel so blessed to be his students.”
Michael Muehle

“I have been training with Sifu Chris Kent for over 21 years and have become part of his instructor staff. I say that because not only have I learned so much from him as a martial artist, but I have also learned so much about how to teach martial arts! Sifu Kent is known in the martial arts, specifically the JKD? Kali community both nationally and internationally as one of the top guys, leaders and instructors in the world! He has become, as his teacher/mentor Sifu Dan Inosanto is, a “master teacher” himself!”
Joffrey Stone

“My husband and I have been training with Sifu Chris Kent for a couple of years now. Sifu Chris is patient, warm and non-intimidating, with a backgraound that is second to none. He treats all of his students like family. In each class, he creates an open environment with instruction that is safe, clear, down-to-earth and practical. He is a gem in the gem state.
Christelle and Jim Lyman

“I started my path in Jeet Kune Do and Kali in 2001. Sifu Kent taught and guided me to discover my potential as a person through Jeet Kune Do. Twenty years later I’m still Blasting and Learning JKD!”
Rizalde Baylon

“Sifu Chris Kent is without doubt one of the best instructors that have ever had the privilege to train under. His expertise in JKD/Kali is second to none. The Chris Kent Institute is a fun, energetic, and very welcoming place to train.”
Jerry Edwards

“Chris Kent JKD is an experience. Here you have the opportunity to not only be a part of Bruce Lee’s legacy, but to be a part of something dynamic and bigger than yourself. Classes are relatively small and feel more like family gatherings. I encourage anyone with a love of martial arts to come visit regardless of martial art knowledge or fitness level.”
Israel Ayola

COVID-19 INFORMATION UPDATE --

While we've re-opened our doors for training, the virus hasn't gone away, so at the Kent Institute we're working hard to create an environment that's as safe as possible yet at the same time doesn't stifle high-quality, professional martial art training.

One such precaution we've taken is that we require everyone who wishes to visit the Kent Institute to complete a pre-visit form before doing so. They can download the pdf file from my website: www.ckjkd.com, fill it in at home up to 24 hours before visiting us to avoid complications when they arrive (if they don't they will have to fill out the form before being allowed to enter the school) and email it back to us. This protocol reassures us that a visitor doesn't have any symptoms of COVID-19 and lets everyone know what we're doing to make visits to our school as safe as possible.

It was wonderful having Joseph Harrison and Casey Machon visit me and train at my school this past week. Spent a lot of extra time discussing JKD, Kali, and the state of the martial arts world.

07/19/2019

Tomorrow, July 20th, will mark the 46th anniversary of the passing of Bruce Lee. In memory I am posting a blog I wrote seven years ago concerning it ( I updated the years). To me it is not about feeling sad that that Bruce Lee died but rather celebrating the fact that he lived.

"May the Legacy Be With You…”

It was 46 years ago today, a mere six weeks after I began my training in JKD that I awakened to learn that the founder of the art, Bruce Lee, had passed away in Hong Kong. I can remember as if it were yesterday calling my teacher, Sifu Dan Inosanto immediately and hearing the devastation in his voice as he confirmed it was true.

While Bruce’s physical body expired 46 years ago, it is important for us to remember that there are two other integral and vital components that comprise the totality of any human being, and they are the components of the human being that endure; mind (or thought) and spirit. And while the physical component of Bruce Lee has been removed, the remaining two thirds are still with us.

Each of us possesses our own unique and very personal ideas as to how we arrive and depart this existence. And it is neither my goal nor desire to attempt to change anyone’s views on the subject. I believe that, as Linda Lee Cadwell stated in her eulogy at Bruce’s funeral, “…the energy of the soul is never extinguished with the passing of the physical body, but merely transformed.” While Bruce Lee may no longer be with us physically, he left behind a dynamic legacy, one that goes beyond the realm of simply fighting. Bruce Lee’s true legacy extends far beyond the simple confines of the martial arts world, and even his own martial expression known as Jeet Kune Do. It is a legacy of “personal evolution” through the discovery and ultimate mastery of oneself, the philosophical touchstone of which is, “Using No Way as Way: Having No Limitations as Limitation.” The whole thrust of Bruce Lee’s teaching was to reflect the power of martial art as a liberating agent.

The legacy Bruce Lee left behind offers each individual an all-encompassing philosophy for living life at the pinnacle of developed potential, and celebrates the best that is within each of us as human beings. As I said, I believe that energy never disappears but is merely transformed, and over time comes to inhabit new vessels or bodies. We, all of us, comprise this new body. We are the ones who share in and carry Bruce Lee’s legacy into the future. We are the ones who help it continue to grow and flourish. For that is what a legacy must do, grow and flourish, otherwise it will die and fade away like dust in the wind.

Each of you, as students, practitioners and teachers of Jeet Kune Do have the unique privilege of sharing in Bruce Lee’s dynamic martial legacy. What does this legacy mean for you? That is a question only you can answer. Whatever your reason may be, you should feel proud in sharing in it. In closing I’d like to say that I am honored to be part of it with each of you. Let us not mourn Bruce’s passing but rather celebrate the fact that he lived, and that the world is a better place because of it.

May It Be Well With You,

Chris Kent

[07/08/19]   NOTE -- I shall not be conducting seminars in England or Italy as per usual this year, as the individuals who host the seminars are unable to.

[07/02/19]   I have deleted the thread concerning the article I posted about the term co-creator for one reason and one reason only. It has become a total waste of time and energy dealing with a single individual who firmly believes there is a conspiracy by members of the LA and Seattle groups to discredit the Oakland Group and the important part it played in Bruce Lee’s overall martial evolution. As I deal in facts and not fiction I have better things to do with my time. Please don’t bother wasting time writing comments about this as I am truly not interested. Time to ”walk on.”

06/27/2019

NEW BLOG --

“Co-creators”of Jeet Kune Do?

In the past several years I’ve been seeing another new term pop up in the JKD world – the term is “co-creator.” I have heard certain people taking credit for, or giving credit to another individual for having created Jeet Kune Do with Bruce Lee, thus being a co-creator of JKD. I broached the subject with Linda Lee Cadwell during one of our regular coffee chats recently, and her response was simple and straightforward – “Bruce and Bruce alone was the creator of JKD. However, Bruce himself would have credited his assistant instructors, students, and friends as having aided him in his personal martial arts growth and evolution.”

While I cannot speak for James Lee, Bruce Lee’s assistant instructor in Oakland, whom I never had the privilege of meeting, my teacher, Sifu Dan Inosanto has commented in numerous interviews throughout the years that besides assisting Bruce, he functioned as a ‘sounding board’ for him – that, in his own words, “I asked a lot of questions and more or less played the devil’s advocate.”On occasion Taky Kimura, Bruce’s first assistant in Seattle has commented likewise. On a personal note, I can assuredly say that in all my years of training with Dan I never ever heard him ever use the term ‘co-creator’ with regard to himself.

Although Linda is a very private person and is not actively involved in the JKD world per se, she nonetheless seeks to help the public maintain clear perception and historical accuracy of the art and philosophy her late husband created. And as this blog pertains to Linda and I am relating her opinion and using her words, I asked her permission before writing and posting it.
