Our First Place winner in the Youth Art Contest Pilota category wowed us with their Artist Statement. Congratulations on a great job Elise, Josephine, and Maria! Visit the museum to see more great pieces of art from these creative youngsters!

"To me, culture is what people do that makes them who they are. Our country does not accept everyone's culture. America is supposed to be this place where people are accepted no matter what, and we do not live up to that promise. I wonder when our country will be equal, or if it will ever happen. In my artwork I tried to show that a group of people can be friends who they are no matter what culture or religion they are, no matter what gender they are, no matter what skin tone they have. We all do different things. Not everyone might like it or like how we do it, but we do it because that's what makes us who we are. Culture is very important to the world, and no one should be judged because they are different." - Elise, Age 12

The Community History Team has been working to complete research on Idaho communities with a Basque presence largely due to mining. Mackay, Mullan, and Silver City all had a few Basque families who settled in those communities and then moved on to other towns and cities. The Museum has been fortunate to receive photos from collections from a few families to help tell the story of those now, by-gone days.

Ramon Gorostiza was born in Axpe, Bizkaia and came to the United States in 1911. Maria Urizar came to the United States in 1912, from Arrazola, Bizakaia, a neighboring village in the same valley as Ramon. Shortly after Maria arrived she was married to Ramon Gorostiza at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nampa, Idaho. They settled in Silver City where Ramon was the overseer of the cookhouses in the mining camps and also operated a livery stable and freight team. Maria and Ramon raised two sons and three daughters and lived in Silver City until 1937.

The Gorostiza’s extensive photo collection was shared with the Basque Museum by Carmen Stoker Marler, daughter of Teresa Gorostiza Stoker, and granddaughter of Ramon and Maria (Urizar) Gorostiza. She recalled that her mother, a long-time member of the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, told the story of how the snow could be as deep as the rooftops. This photo gives the viewer an idea of the challenges the Gorostizas and others faced while living in remote areas.

These little txikis are part of Boiseko Ikastola, a department of the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, and we are so happy to celebrate them and the year they just had! What troopers! Zorionak to the 6 graduates headed to elementary school in the Fall! Thank you to Little Pallets and Boise Rock School for all they do to enhance Ikastola, and a huge ESKERRIK ASKO to our Ikastola staff, Sarah Artis, Kristina Franzoia, and Alicia Artis! Without them, and the support of families and Museum memberships, this Ikastola would not be the only Basque language preschool outside the Basque Country! 22 years and going strong! As part of the efforts to restore the Cyrus Jacobs Uberuaga House in 2004, archaeological excavations beneath the parlor and front bedroom floorboards took place. Almost a decade later, a well was uncovered and excavated in 2012. Both excavations unearthed artifacts dating the 1860s to the present day, clues to the daily lives of the owners and boarders who lived here. Artifacts ranged from architectural items such as nails and wood fragments; to domestic artifacts from different aspects of home life – glass and ceramic fragments, matches and to***co tins, bottle caps and kitchen utensils. Even items that reflect the presence of children within the home were found, including marbles, a drumstick, doll fragments, and a slate pencil. We have added a sampling of these artifacts to our online collections – browse them here: https://hub.catalogit.app/2448
