The Basque Community History Project has been fortunate to encounter individuals in five states and many communities who have been willing to share their stories and/or photographs with the Basque Museum & Cultural Center. Throughout 2021 and into the first quarter of this year, the Community History team is reviewing all of the photo collections shared with us and searching for the stories behind them – individual names, places, dates, occasions, etc. – so that each accessioned photo includes as much information as possible.
Rose Elordi Pitman, with roots in Jordan Valley, Oregon, shared a collection of photographs with us. This photo is of a group of children attending summer catechism classes at St. Bernard’s Parish in 1956. Two nuns would stay in the town for two weeks to assist with the classes. As Rose recalls, they were “pretty fun” people. When asked if she could help identify some of the individuals in this more than six-decade old picture, here’s what was provided to us!
Row 1, L-R: Marshia Eiguren Lee Ziegler, Paula Acarregui Slippy, Jonelle Lequerica Krakau, unknown girl, Johnny Jaca, Christine Eiguren Rhoades, young boy Montgomery, Deanna McKay.
Row 2, L-R: David Elordi, Suzanne Elordi, Rosemary Cortabitarte, Kathleen Eiguren Mendiola, Carol Montgomery Coleman, Monica Telleria Uberuaga, Elizabeth “Liz” Eiguren Bilbao, Joanne Arritola, Bob Burrel
Row 3, L-R: Two nuns – names unknown
Row 4, L-R: Cathleen Borgeman DeCato Shaw, Kay Eiguren, Sherie Corta, young boy Burrel, Tom Cortabitarte, unknown priest
Row 5, L-R: Rose Elordi Pitman, young boy Burrel (center), unknown boy
Row 6, L-R: Danny Arritola, Dennis McKay, Phillip Chertudi, Ron Corta, Harry Staples, Jim Corta, Richard Mallea
Row 7, L-R: unknown boy, Joe Telleria
We appreciate the time and effort individuals take to help us with this endeavor and are grateful to those like Rose Elordi Pitman for their incredible recollection of names and faces!
