The history of Basque boardinghouses in Salt Lake City includes “La Fonda Espanola” which was owned and operated by the Estefania (Yrigoyen Aztobitza) and Fred Otasue, Jr. from 1931 to 1976. The “La Casa Espanola” was operated by Juan and Marie Bilbao from 1911-1930 and the “Estancona’s boardinghouse, with Segundo Estancona as the proprietor and his wife, Felisa Carrillo Estancona, is found in the 1930 and 1940 Salt Lake City Census and may have closed when Segundo died in 1952.

The Hogar Hotel, however, was the primary gathering place for Basques in the area for 50 years (1927-1977) and its closing became the impetus for the formation of the Basque Club of Utah in May of 1980. Basques still wanted to gather together socially, so although they had picnics prior to this, they organized formally and have been an active Basque club since that time.
Nancy Zubiri, in her book, “A Travel Guide to Basque America” states that “the old Hogar Hotel, like most historic Basque hotels, was within walking distance of the Salt Lake City depot. All the big events were celebrated at the Hogar – Christmas, New Year’s, funerals and marriages. There was a close-knit group of Basques. Basque families who didn’t live at the Hogar came to join in the celebrations. Anything that happened in the Basque community was quickly news at the Hogar. During the late 1960s and 1970s, the Landas leased the Hogar Hotel to two other Basque couples, Milagros and Gracian Etchepar and Pedro “Pete” and Katherine “Cathy” (Garcia) Urquidi. The sale of the historic building in 1977, after John Landa’s death, marked the end of that era” (Zubiri 2006:476).

The photos of Christmastime at the Hogar in 1956 are from the Cecilia Sillonis Lodzinski Collection and shed light on the ambiance in the Hogar Hotel during the holidays. The juke-box provided many types of music and long tables brought Basques together, whether family or just friends. The Landas really did provide a “home away from home” for many.

Happy holidays from the curatorial staff! Today we are showing off our largest artifact, the Cyrus Jacobs Uberuaga House! This photograph (minus the festive lights) was taken in the 1980s, just prior to the formation of the Museum. In 2004, the house was restored to reflect the time period of the Cyrus Jacobs family and the time the home was used as a Basque boardinghouse by the Uberuaga family. Take our virtual tour to learn more about the house and its history! https://basquemuseum.eus/see/virtual-exhibits/virtual-tour/

One thing Boiseans look forward to in the winter is snow in the mountains, and we’re sure the same can be said for other mountainous communities! To celebrate the first of hopefully many snowy days this season, we are breaking out our snow gear and putting a spotlight on these military issued ski goggles. These goggles were worn by Edward Orbea while serving in the 87th Mountain Infantry, 10th Mountain Division of the US Army during World War II. Edward’s love of skiing began in Silver City where he was born and continued throughout his life. He joined the National Ski Patrol in 1937 and was involved with the NSP for 60 years. He joined the Bogus Basin Ski Patrol in 1947 and was an active member for the remainder of his life.
Goggles (2021.9.7) and photographs (2020.60) donated by Ed Orbea (son of Edward Orbea).

The Basque Community History Project has been fortunate to encounter individuals in five states and in many communities who have been willing to share their stories and/or photographs with the Basque Museum & Cultural Center. Throughout 2021, the Community History team has been trying to go back to all of the photo collections shared with us to include as much information as possible – individual names, places, dates, occasion, etc. so that as much information as possible can be documented along with the accessioned photo. Rose Elordi Pitman, with roots in Jordan Valley, Oregon, shared a collection of photographs with us and when asked if she could help identify some of the individuals in this more than six decade old picture – here’s what was provided to us! We appreciate the time and effort individuals are taking to help us with this endeavor and are grateful to individuals like Rose Elordi Pitman for their incredible recollection of names and faces!
A group of children from Jordan Valley attending summer catechism classes at St. Bernard's parish C. 1956. Two nuns would come for church school for two weeks. The children from Arock and surrounding areas would come to the classes at the elementary school. Rose recalls that the nuns were "pretty fun."
