Send a shout to Laura! Laura grew up in Southern California where she met and married her husband of 24 years. A year after they married, they moved to the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois where they have raised their four children, 3 biological and one through adoption. They relocated to Treasure Valley in August 2020 due to a new job opportunity for Laura’s husband. They are enjoying the warmer weather, no humidity and access to mountains. They added a puppy to their family in November and this new addition has added much joy to the family. Laura enjoys hiking, walking her dog, playing outside with her kids, reading books, listening to podcasts, learning new things and camping. Laura graduated with her Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy from University of Southern California in 1996. While working on her Masters in Los Angeles, she was able to complete a four-month Sensory Integration Theory and Treatment course at the Ayres Clinic in Torrance. After completing the course, she then completed the training needed to administer the SIPT (Sensory Integration and Praxis Test). Since then, she has taken more recent Sensory Integration Theory and Treatment courses and taught courses on Sensory Integration to parents, teachers and local therapists. After graduating from USC, Laura worked at two pediatric clinics in Southern California where she worked with children in the clinic with a variety of diagnoses, as well as worked in the schools. In 1998, she and her husband relocated to the Chicago suburbs where she worked at a specialized school for children with Autism, Illinois early intervention, and an outpatient pediatric clinic. During her time in Illinois, she had training in many areas of treatment such as Neuro-developmental approach, SOS, Therapeutic Listening, Kiniesiotaping, ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and was part of the Early In

❓What else can you do at home while you wait for speech therapy to begin? 📣Model correct speech sounds.

How? If you know which speech sounds your child is having difficulty pronouncing, model/bombard your child with the correct production in order to help them without placing too much pressure💎 on them.

1️⃣Slightly overemphasize the target sounds while talking/interacting with your child-even for just 5 minutes per day! This helps draw your child’s attention to the correct production of the sound, without requiring them to produce the sound.

2️⃣Select books to read or toys to play with which contain the speech sounds your child is struggling with in order for you to model the correct production of the target words (repeat, repeat, repeat!) without placing pressure on the child to produce the sound correctly. ⭐

✔️One step you can take to help support your child while you're waiting to begin speech therapy is to read📚!

With younger children, books with pictures🖼️ to catch their attention and simple stories are best. While reading, label and point to different vocabulary and concepts and narrate using simple sentences what is happening in the book. The goal is to make reading fun!

🌀With pre-school aged children, continue to point out vocabulary and concepts while reading. During/after reading the book together, ask them a variety of age appropriate “wh” questions to practice answering questions and improve listening comprehension skills. i.e. “Where did the kids go? Who did they see at the park?”❓

School-aged children can practice predicting what is going to happen next in the story or discuss emotions and how different characters are feeling and "why" in addition to discussing vocabulary and answering “wh” questions.

Have fun!

While most people can get behind a day devoted to 🥣Mac and Cheese (it is a staple in many kids' diets), if a child is extremely selective about their diet it could be an indicator that they would benefit 💡from feeding therapy.

Here are some additional signs: 🍒he/she does not eat a variety of foods of different textures or from different food groups, 🍒he/she coughs, chokes, gags, or vomits while eating, 🍒he/she avoids trying new foods. If you think your child would benefit from a 🍽️feeding therapist, give us a ring☎️to discuss!
