Congratulations to Vandal Alica Holthaus, winner of the Idaho Association of School Administrators District Leadership Award! Alica is an alumna of the U of I Educational Leadership program and is currently in her fifth year as superintendent of St. Maries Joint School District No. 41.

What keeps her motivated after 14 years as a school administrator?

"I am one of the lucky few that can say that I don’t get that Sunday night feeling. I have loved my job from the beginning. I have a deep understanding of the impact we as educators can have on the life of a child. I love to hear from former students about something that I did or said when I was their teacher. I love to hear people from our community talk about the impact someone on our staff has had on their lives."
State Department of Education representatives will serve on Idaho's new Back-to-School Task Force, with Superintendent Ybarra's Deputy Supt. of Communications & Policy, Marilyn Whitney, serving as co-chair alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare's Sonja Schriever. The Task Force will promote COVID-19 prevention strategies and provide recommendations based on guidance for K-12 schools for safe learning environments with the goal of having Idaho’s children attend school safely and in-person.

In addition to SDE and DHW staff, task force members include representatives from the Office of Governor Brad Little, the Idaho School Boards Association, public health districts, Idaho High School Activities Association, School Nurses Organization of Idaho, Idaho Association of School Administrators, Idaho Office of School Safety & Security, Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs, charter schools, local school boards, a pediatrician, and Parents and Teachers Associations.

“Childhood literacy has a ripple effect across a child’s lifetime and across a community. Research shows literacy milestones influence access to education and job opportunities, influence workforce development, and even help reduce healthcare costs and crime rates. When children are successful readers, a community can grow, learn, lead and thrive together. Helping kids become successful readers is a responsibility of the whole community to undertake and requires a shift in cultural values in which reading is prioritized, talked about, attended to, and incorporated into everyday life and community activities.”

Amy Voeller, Program Manager for Opening Books, Opening Doors - Coeur d'Alene was recently published in the Idaho Association of School Administrators magazine, Perspectives, about shaping a culture of reading.

Help!

I'm looking to Skype my fire safety program with children from the following states in yellow before the end of the year.

We have been trying for OVER THREE YEARS and would love to reach our goal of Skyping our fire safety program by the end of the year with students from all 50 states.

If you know of any teachers from these states that might be interested, the Keep Kids Fire Safe™ Foundation and I have special goodies for the first teacher and their class from each of these states that complete a Skype visit!

Please share!

Special thanks to Skype in the Classroom for helping us connect with almost 500 schools over the years and to KKFSF's corporate partner, State Farm, for making it possible!
