"Public rejection of science has long been a concern of the scientific community and has the potential to cause great societal harm. Using public acceptance of evolutionary theory as the model, this study set out to examine if zoos and aquariums could address this issue using methods known to increase evolutionary acceptance in formal education settings. The data were obtained at the Aquarium Of Boise (Idaho, USA), where participants (n=64) completed a two-part survey and participated in a 15-min presentation."

"Thus, this study shows that it is possible for zoos and aquariums to use techniques found to be effective in formal educational settings to increase public acceptance of controversial scientific topics."

We are proud to participate in helping the advancement of scientific knowledge in an an educational and informative setting. We are also proud to support one of our former Volunteer and Staff Member, Ethan Tolman, in his study while at the Aquarium of Boise. Congratulations to all of the authors on the publication of their research study!

A study recently published in JZAR found that a significant number of individuals changed to a more positive view of the evolutionary theory after watching an aquarium-based live animal presentation. Even though the sample size was small and invites further research, these results provide more evidence of the role of zoos & aquariums in promoting science and educating the public!

Public Health Order Update 05/15/2021

Public Health Order Update

"Due to updated CDC guidance and the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine to all Idahoans 12 and older, the City of Boise is lifting the mask requirement in all indoor and outdoor public spaces! Masks are still required at indoor City of Boise facilities. Businesses may still choose to implement their own mask policy and distancing requirements, and we will continue to support the businesses that do. We're grateful to everyone who sacrificed over the past year to help put us in the position to take this step."

The Aquarium of Boise is no longer limiting capacity to 50. Masks are not required for those that are fully vaccinated.

Say hello to "Harvey," our wonderfully irritable peacock mantis shrimp (which is not a shrimp but a stomatopod). They are well known for the extremely fast punching motion that they do with their front appendages to kill and break apart their prey, which is faster than a .22 caliber bullet! This punch is one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom and is strong enough to break through an aquariumโ€™s glass wall. Peacock mantis shrimp use this behavior to break open snails and other mollusks and to completely dismember crabs, shrimps, and other crustaceans. #AquariumofBoise #boiseaquarium #idahoaquarium #peacockmantishrimp #notashrimp #stomatopod #harvey P.C. Mussels discovered in aquarium products sold in Idaho - East Idaho News 03/06/2021

Mussels discovered in aquarium products sold in Idaho - East Idaho News

What the public can do

Do not dump aquarium tank water or dispose of moss balls in natural waterbodies.

Aquarium owners can safely dispose of the moss ball(s) by one of two methods:
*Remove the moss ball(s) and place in a plastic bag. Put the bag in a freezer and leave for at least 24 hours. After that, the moss ball(s) can be disposed of in the trash.
*Place moss ball(s) in boiling water for at least one full minute. After that, the moss ball(s) can be disposed of in the trash.

For moss balls that have already been in an aquarium, the ISDA recommends cleaning the entire aquarium:

*Collect fish and plants and place them in another container. Dispose of the water in a sink or toilet (municipal wastewater is treated to kill pathogens, and septic tanks are fully self-contained underground).
*Carefully scrub the tank, accessories, rocks, and decorations with a strong solution of chlorine bleach/water. Another option (if you donโ€™t want to use chlorine bleach) is to carefully use water that is 140 degrees to flush and coat all the tank and accessory surfaces. ISDA recommends another water change within a week and to continue to monitor the tank for any unusual aquatic growth.
*For very large aquariums that you may not be able to completely dewater/decontaminate, dispose of the moss ball(s) as above. It is recommended that you do conduct frequent water changes and continue to monitor the tank for any unusual aquatic growth.
