Have you heard of Treatment Foster Care or TFC? It's a service on the spectrum of services offered in Idaho. It's a service for youth, both in foster care or for you whose families are receiving supportive services, who are experiencing a high level of needs. Treatment Foster Care provides foster families with additional, trauma informed training and access to family therapy to promote family stability. TFC also provides youth with access to a child and family therapist, CBRS workers, youth peer support, and an additional case manager as a professional team to provide wrap around, holistic support for the youth's needs. This service is invaluable in the spectrum of services for youth in foster care because it provides an additional layer of communication and support for youth who could benefit from a TFC team, helping youth to experience less moves and more healing. If you have any questions about becoming a TFC provider or respite provider, please reach out today!
Did you know that Treatment Foster Care (TFC) is part of a spectrum of services offered to support youth in Idaho? Treatment Foster Care provides more support for youth than a general foster care, with greater professional support for youth and training for foster families, but more normalcy and less rigidity than a residential facility by allowing for a family based, community centered home environment. TFC homes are invaluable in the lives of youth because they help provide just the right level of support and structure for youth experiencing higher needs. There are youth right now who could benefit from an open TFC home and we are accepting TFC parent applications now at www.pathwaysofidaho.com/tfc. If you would like to learn more about what it would mean to open your home to one of these amazing youth, please reach out today!
"The greatest gift you and I have been given is love. While there are many forms of love, the strongest one, and most important for a foster child, is that of unconditional love." - Dr. John DeGarmo
"Just because a child is in foster care doesn’t mean that they never had any good times with their parent or parents. They might have very specific traditions that they enjoyed, such as reading a particular story, getting a particular candy, or opening a single present on Christmas Eve instead of waiting until Christmas morning. If at all possible, see if you can change up your traditions in order to accommodate those of your foster kid." -Tish Gallegos

It can feel so heavy when learning about trauma and the many things that may cause trauma. But in learning about trauma, you will also learn that the brain has neuroplasticity. This means that with repeated behaviours and strategies learned from licensed mental health clinicians you can also heal trauma in the brain.

Remember when our emotions are high we are in survival mode. The ability to use our logical part of the brain is limited.
When emotions are overwhelming for us or our children, try and take a moment to calm before jumping in. That doesn’t mean that we don't do anything. It just means that we don't need to respond in that moment. Let's face it, when we do react in a moment of high emotion, it usually escalates the situation.
Remember things don't have to be perfect.

"What I've discovered is that my journey as an adoptive parent is not about making my child MINE, it's about becoming totally and completely his." - Michael Monroe
We have a teen in foster care. She is 16 and just got her driver’s license. Her foster mom has a car she planned to let her use, however, it is now not starting and might be a battery issue (started when she left a dome light on and the battery was drained). Now it will not start without jumping. I am wondering if there might be resources to get her a new battery/help troubleshoot what the problem is.
The Foster mom is a single working mom. Our teen lives in Meridian but goes to school in Boise, so needs of transport to/from school are necessary. She also just got a job (Exciting!!) in Meridian and so she needs to be able to get from school to her after-school job.
Any help or direction will be much appreciated!
"You cannot lead a child to a place of healing if you do not know the way yourself." - Dr. Karyn Purvis
When children in foster care can not be reunited with their families, one alternative option that can help keep children within their extended family groups and communities, is placing them with relatives. In 2021, 181 of the children who exited foster care were adopted by their relatives.
"In order to help our children heal, we must understand and address the differences in their brain, body, biology, and beliefs." - Dr. Karyn Purvis
In 2021, 759 children who exited foster care were reunified with their families. In Idaho, the first goal of foster care is to reunify children with their families once their homes are safe again. There are many wonderful team members who work together to help children's families get back to a place where children in the home are safe. Case managers, licensing workers, foster families, behavioral health specialists, and the people who work the hardest to make these reunifications possible, the families of the children in foster care. A huge thank you to everyone working to keep families together and prevent children from going through the trauma of losing their family, pets, extended family, and surrounding community.
We are currently seeking foster parents who are willing to be part of a professional support team for youth in our Treatment Foster Care program. Currently, there are over 1,400 youth in foster care in Idaho and dozens of those youth could benefit from Treatment Foster Care (TFC). Treatment Foster Care provides youth with a professional support team and well-equipped, supported caregiver(s). This team includes an on-staff family and child therapist to support both the child and their family, an additional TFC case manager, and 24/7 support from the case manager, program manager, and licensing worker. TFC foster parents are equipped with relevant life experience to caring for children with high needs, ongoing trauma informed training, and a daily rate starting at $90 a day to provide flexible funding to meet the child's needs quickly. "Tell your children 'you are precious, you are valuable, and nobody else is created like you.'" - Dr. Karyn Purvis
In 2021, the number of youth who exited foster care was 1,298. The majority of these youth were reunified with their families, but other youth may have exited foster care via adoption, guardianship, or by aging out and becoming legal adults.
You have permission to opt out!
Tis the season for holidays and family gatherings - assess your child's TRUE capacity for big events, family meals, and all the extras, then make a plan that supports your child's needs as the TOP priority!
It's important as caregivers to nurture and lean on supportive relationships while on the journey of fostering. The Gottman Institute has a lot of great tips on fostering positive relationships with partners and family.
If you’re experiencing contempt in your relationship, there are proven antidotes to combat it and turn conflict into positive growth.
The first way to do that is to start small and describe your own feelings and needs about any given issue.
To create long-term immunity, you will need to think about the greater context of your relationship. Fondness and admiration aren’t built overnight, but if you intentionally work to do small, positive things for your partner often, then you can create that system.
Please note: This post is not intended to address situations of abuse. Social media is not a substitute for individualized support.
Respectful kids feel respected
I can show my child respect by...
Giving extra time for transitions, so that my child isn't rushed in the moment.
Imagine you're in the middle of an important phone call, and your spouse runs into the room and says "HONEY WE ARE WAITING IN THE CAR RIGHT NOW!" It would feel jarring! Give kids the same heads up and warnings that you'd want if you were transitioning from something that's important to you.
Out of the 1,346 youth placed in foster care during 2021, 72.8% were due to neglect. Neglect, year to year, is usually the number one reason children are placed into foster care. These youth are placed in foster care temporarily while their families work to address the issues that were creating safety concerns. Foster care is intended to be a temporary placement option while their families receive support and work toward reunification. One of the most important ways our community can support youth in foster care, is providing preventative services. Supporting families before situations become dire can help avoid trauma for the youth and help keep families safe and together. Just a few of the wonderful organizations in the area that support families before foster care enters the picture are listed below.

Our Volunteers seek to build relationships with their family by spending quality time with the whole family: playing games, sharing a meal, and being intentional. They can also create and deliver personal care packages based on current practical needs. We tell our volunteers to think of themselves as the fun “auntie” and “uncle” who visits once a month to bring love, encouragement, and hope.
