Trenching collapses are preventable and workers losing their lives in trenches is inexcusable.
Jose Valenzuela, tasked with fixing a damaged sewer line in Holdenville, Oklahoma, had this picture taken of him moments before the trench collapsed. He was trapped for nine hours and did not survive.
First responders, rescue teams, and excavator specialists worked for hours to recover his body, which was finally found at 11:30 pm on Monday, Aoril . OSHA is investigating the incident, leaving Valenzuela's family to grieve the loss of a hardworking family man who took pride in his job.
Trenching work has guidelines and known safety precautions/equipment that prevent tragedies like Jose’s.
According to regulations, trenches that are five feet or deeper require protective systems, which may include sloping, benching, shoring, or shielding. If a trench is 20 feet or deeper, a professional engineer must design the protective system.
