I had fallen behind in using my vegetables this week and thought I might try some gazpacho. I had tomatoes, peppers and onions. I bought a cucumber. Then I thought, why not add the remaining carrots. There were also green beans, so I steamed them, cut them in small pieces and added them as well. Then, I looked on my counter and saw that some of the peaches I bought on Saturday were looking a bit puny. So I pealed them cut them in small pieces. I added a bit of the pickled onions and cucumbers from my stash in the fridge and some salt and pepper. I'm now letting the mixture cool in the fridge and will "spice it up" after the flavors blend. I think it will be a lovely cold dish to enjoy in the hot weather.
Bruschetta has never tasted this good.

We're serving bruschetta just how it should be—crispy bread topped with delicious Italian tomatoes, garlic, and basil oil. This dish was made using produce from campus farm and sourdough from Scholars Inn.

KALE yeah baby! Winter break is finally here! 🥳

Seeing frost on the ground this morning, one of our team members was thinking back fondly on the winter of 2016 when she did a three month internship on an urban farm in Milwaukee and the high temp the first day was -2 F! 🥶

Winter farming is not for the faint of heart but, luckily, there are no faint-hearted members on our farm crew! 💪❤️‍🔥🍀

If you want to learn more about opportunities for working at the IU Campus Farm, shoot us a DM or send an email to [email protected]! 💌

Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season and looking forward to maybe meeting some of you in the spring!

Yum yum yum! Does anyone find that they’re eating less salad now that the days are cooler but still deeply craving greens? Just looking at this photo is making my mouth water!

Any favorite Thanksgiving salad recipes you’ll be bringing out this year? We’ve been loving hearing all your recipe recommendations lately!

Wow. Look at this beautiful yellow amaranth! Isn’t it amazing that nourishing food sources can also be such works of art?

Who here had a chance to volunteer at the farm this summer? Did you have a favorite plant to work with?

Just a little scene from the farm this summer. 🦅 (I know it’s not an eagle, but just look at that resemblance!) 😝

It takes a lot of inter-working parts to make things run smoothly over here, and one of those parts is this little weather station!

It collects site specific weather info for the farm so we can know exact precipitation amounts and make better-informed irrigation decisions.

Pretty cool huh! 🤓

Lucky for salad lovers, kale and a number of dark, leafy greens love this cooler weather.

Has anyone here gotten into “warm salads”? Sounds kinda funny, but it’s basically a very lightly sautéed kale dish, and often involves tasty things like goat cheese, toasted nuts, and roasted squash!

We’d love to hear what some of your favorite things to do with kale are! Drop your recipe recommendations in the comments below!

The William T. Patten Foundation: Lectures Schedule: Hiding in the Climate Crisis: Honest Hope in Democratic Action

“A small number of people in every generation are forerunners, in thought, action, spirit, who swerve past the barriers of greed and power to hold a torch high for the rest of us. Lappé is one of those.” - Howard Zinn

Check out these two very special lectures this week with author and activist Frances Moore Lappé!

Her work addresses what she now characterizes as simultaneous political, economic, and climate crises with interacting roots, including an insufficiently regulated form of capitalism, the power of big money on democracy, and climate catastrophe. She seeks to empower people to see how this presents an historic opportunity for us to work together to solve these issues.

Look at this cute little flower and the tiny sticky spikes on this cleavers plant 🌱

Monday meditation: find a plant in your yard or in a crack in the sidewalk, or even a fallen leaf from a tree, and just give it a good hard look! What does it feel like on your fingers? What does it smell like? What other details can you take in? Are you taking some deep breaths? Are you feeling present?

There are so many shortcuts our brain makes to help us move smoothly through life, but we can miss so much richness of experience in that efficiency! Take the scenic route every once in a while!

Working at the Campus Farm is so much fun because, though it’s a lot of hard work, we are often forced to take these meditative moments many times throughout the day!

Thank you plants for all the ways you teach us and help us grow!

The @iufoodinstitute just sent out their monthly newsletter and James Farmer, our Campus Farm co-lead, shared a little update on things at the farm. For those of you who aren’t signed up for the newsletter, you can find his note below:

“The IU Campus Farm is quickly winding down for the season as the night time freezing temps start to set in with the first week of November. The farm stand is all finished, but was a fantastic success this season. Thanks to all who made a point to visit us on Wednesday evenings! We will be sure to announce widely for its return in May. The CSA has only two weeks left before we break for the winter months. Thanks to all the shareholders for their support throughout 2021!

While winter gets close, there is still much to do at the farm. Garlic will be planted in the next few weeks, cool weather crops in the high tunnels will be cared for and harvested periodically, maintenance that has been deferred throughout the busy fall months will be tackled, and the farm manager and crew will be able to catch their collective breath! Even while things slow down, much happens year round. Stay up to date on what is happening at the farm via Instagram and our website.”

First frost got anyone else feeling like this??? 🥶❄️☃️

This may be a photo from last winter, but last night felt COLD! And the forecast says it’ll be dropping into the 20s this week!😱

These high tunnels give us so much more flexibility with the weather though! You’ll be amazed to see what we’re able to grow all winter!

Is anyone else doing any season extension on their farm or even with their home gardens? We’d love to hear about it!

Our Story

The IU Campus Farm's mission is to promote a sustainable food system at IU through education, food production, research, and outreach.

Located just off campus, the farm has around five acres available for crop production. The produce will be donated to the Crimson Cupboard, as well as sold to campus facilities and a farm stand. The farm will rely largely on student volunteers and aims to provide the IU community with sustainably-grown food by Spring 2018.

The farm is located at the historic Hinkle-Garton Farmstead. Visit https://www.visitbloomington.com/listing/hinkle-garton-farmstead-community-historic-site/698/ for more information!

Looking for a way to get involved with the Campus Farm? Consider joining our Student Advisory Board! This group represents student interest as it relates to food, production, and the farm. Contact [email protected] for more information.
