How many of these have you done in the past week?

I see a world coming where walking will become just a notion; a skill of the past. A world where people will have to learn how to walk again. - @Erwanlecorre 🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏾‍♂️

Do you think that could never happen? If you're not convinced that natural human movement is going extinct, ask yourself: How many of these timeless yet rapidly disappearing movements have you performed this week? This month? This year? 🤔🍃

We just scheduled some more wildlife track & sign classes for December! There’s one for ages 12-17 and two classes for 18 & up.
We rarely get to see wildlife but tracking can reveal who is in the area and what they are doing. We will also look at plants, trees, birds, and local ecology.
Each class is 3-hours long. Register online at www.bookeo.com/wildnature

Class is taught by Kevin Glenn, Level III Track & Sign certified tracker from CyberTracker North America (the leading tracking certification system in the world). Kevin got level III certification when he scored 97% on a track & sign evaluation.

Join us to look deeper into nature and learn to see the tracks and signs that wildlife leaves behind. It can be argued that tracking is the origin of science in that in certain aspects "it utilizes the same intellectual and creative abilities as physics and mathematics". Tracking organically teaches us the scientific method while utilizing our mind, senses, imagination, and body to unravel the mysteries in the wilderness. Join us to journey into the mysteries and wonders of nature and see the world with new eyes.

Do you like animals? I do. Have you ever sat and watched, like really watched, a wild animal? It's different than playing with your domestic dog or cat or ferret because you can't control a wild animal. You have very little influence of what it's doing and the decisions it makes. Who or what guides the wild animals? What informs them? What influences them? These are questions I've had for many years.

A wild animal is operating on inherited instincts but it's not just instincts. There's more to it. They are super aware creatures that live in the moment. If they didn't, they would be dead. So they have a strong need to pay attention and live in the moment and use their senses to their maximum ability. They pay attention to the communication of birds and other animals. They notice the wind direction, places of light and shadow, and topography of the land. They play the landscape like an instrument.

Now let me ask you a different question. Have you ever wanted to have a teacher who was super present and lived in the moment? Have you ever wanted to have a teacher that was greatly connected to nature? Have you ever wanted to have a teacher that didn't just spell things out but instead they left "bread crumbs" in a way that made you really think and ask questions and pay attention? I know I have. That's why I'm teaching a wildlife tracking class... because the animals hold all of those attributes and yes we can learn how to have more of those qualities in our lives from tracking animals.

You can register for my in-person tracking class and see first-hand what it is like to follow the tracks and signs of animal teachers. Hear stories of what tracking can do for you and open your senses to the world around you like never before.

We had our two day staff training for summer camp prep. 23 of us, mostly teens with a history of attending Wild Nature Project. I’m so happy to mentor these great minds. Their courage and caring give me hope for the future. The white board is a glimpse into some of what we dug into. The left side lists all of the things that we want the kids who come to camp to feel and experience. They also learned a lot about the art of storytelling (because that’s how we set up every game and activity) and how to ask for and give each other feedback, so that we can grow even more. We talked about leadership, vulnerability, and courage among many other juicy topics. There were so many levels of awesome and I’m super excited to start our summer camp season with this crew. ❤️🙏🏼🔥

Nature & Survival Skills Indiana

Preparing for winter. When I pause outdoors to listen and feel I notice, even closer, the seasons changing. The familiar fall sounds in the cricket chorus, the smell of the leaves changing and falling, the silenced cicada song. It has me thinking ahead to winter and cold weather. How do you prepare for winter? I'm not talking about physically so much as mentally and emotionally. Do you dread it? Do you focus on how hard it will be; dark short days, cold air, "bad" weather? Or do you get excited about the gifts of the changing seasons? How does your mind focus right now (leading up to winter) influence your experience when winter comes? It has a profound effect.

Our culture does pretty good at adapting to summer heat with swimming pools, ice cream, cold drinks, and other water activities. However, when it comes to winter we don't see as much outdoor community activities involving wrapping in blankets and sharing stories and laughter, warm drinks, and campfires. That's more common in the autumn and then fizzles out with winter.

I learned long ago to make peace with the winter instead of fighting it. And not only that but to get excited about it. The opportunity to cozy up in warm clothes or blankets with a hot drink, to take walks in the forest without bugs, to go winter camping, and to see and experience snowfall. There also seems to be more time at home for cleaning, new decorations, or changing the layout. There's many reasons to be excited about winter. What are yours?
