We support all births and all types of births are a beautiful experience to meet your baby!

There’s a weird assumption out there that doulas only help with “natural birth.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For these doulas, birth is birth. (And pregnancies naturally end with the baby leaving the parent’s body- either vaginally or abdominally. So maybe it’s all natural?)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A cesarean birth is no less beautiful and no less real than a vaginal birth. It’s no less important. No less worthy of celebration.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s no less.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Yes!! We do love babies, but we don't do this work because of them. We love all the time we spend with families preparing for this time and learning to adjust to life with the new baby.

Don’t get us wrong- babies are adorable, amazing little creatures.

But.

We actually do this work because we love working with the parents of these tiny humans.

Whether it’s parents who feel unsure about what is to come or parents who are confident in all of their choices- We get the honor of sitting in a sacred space that allows us a front row seat to see them make choices to be the best parents they can be.

Babies are cute- But watching people become parents is BEAUTIFUL.

We love recommending Doulas for our clients!

Repost: @bestdoula

What do doulas do?

The age-old answer for this has been "we provide physical, emotional, and informational support." But you see, this definition sells us very short.

Sure, we provide physical support, sometimes literally - holding hips, legs, hair. However, a doula's ability to physically support their client isn't really that - it's that we are 100% responsive, anticipating needs before they are voiced by using our knowledge of our client and our understanding of birth. Physical support sounds like training wheels - and we are so much more than that.

Yes, we provide emotional support. Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are emotional times. But what doulas provide is unwavering faith in their client's abilities. Doulas can slow the room when it's spinning, be an anchor when clients need to hold on, act as a sounding board when they need to roar. We understand how very hard birthing people are working even when it looks easy.

Yes we do have a vast amount of knowledge about pregnancy, physiologically normal birth, cesarean births and postpartum. But truly, providing endless amounts of information can create a divide in the relationship we build with clients. Instead, of being the source of all information for clients, doulas are the bridge to that information and other resources.

Our clients, already know more about how they will birth their baby then we do. Doulas both know and honor that truth.

As a mother and Doula this hurts to see happen. There must be a change. She knew the signs, you should too.
・・・
This story is absolutely devastating, and we thought the least we could do is use our platform to share her story and encourage you to donate to baby Charlotte & Anthony as they grieve the loss of a mother & wife in Dr. Chaniece Wallace.

“Chaniece ... was a Chief Resident at Indiana University School of Medicine Pediatric Hospitalist with Indiana University Health Physicians and just completed her board exams while interviewing for multiple positions around the country.”

“On October 20th, 2020 Chaniece’s doctors informed us that she was developing symptoms of preeclampsia. From this day to Oct 22, 2020 my wife Chaniece had to endure surgery due to complications developing in her body. Three of the main challenges we encountered were a ruptured liver, high blood pressure, and kidneys were not fully functioning. Chaniece fought with every piece of strength, courage, and faith she had available.”

“She has been described by those that worked with her as incredibly sweet, kind, and a fantastic physician.”

@wokedoctors is deeply saddened by the news, and the loss of another amazing Black woman during childbirth. This story is heartbreaking, to the truest sense of the word.

Please consider donating to Dr. Wallace’s husband, Anthony, and their new baby girl, Charlotte, as they navigate these next few weeks in the NICU. This is an incredibly difficult time for them and any little bit of financial relief could go a long way.

To the residents and staff at @iupeds, we want you to know we are here for you as you continue to mourn the loss of Dr. Wallace.
