Meet artist,

Xiaofei Yue (Chinese, born 1986)

Water is H2O, hydrogen two parts, oxygen one, but there is also a third thing, that makes it water and nobody knows what it is. The atom locks up two energies but it is a third thing present which makes it an atom. ‘The Third Thing’ — D.H. Lawrence.’

Since three years ago I have been working on a project scrutinizing the Guanxi between two people. Translated from Mandarin, it literally means “relationships” or “connections”, although neither of these terms sufficiently reflects the wide cultural implications in Chinese culture. Figuratively, it implies the invisible tension and atmosphere between two people. This series of works were inspired by the poem “The Third Thing” by D.H. Lawrence. Nobody knows what the third thing is, but because of its presence, two people encounter, click, and form connection.

The guanxi between two girls is my main subject. Two girls posed together give out a mystical and poetic aura, which intrigues me, the most. During my art practice, I developed my personal language to create collision between Chinese water colour and rice paper. The accidental result they provoke through the materiality expresses the ephemerality and fragility of guanxi between two girls, the third thing. The intention of the project is thus to repossess and reinterpret what I perceived of the essence of human nature that is hidden deeply in today’s society through painting the guanxi between two girls.

The latest work titled “Balthus in 2020” responds to COIVD-19 pandemic. The painting is a homage to the masterpiece Girl by Balthus, only this time the girl is wearing a mask in light of the Corona Virus. Youth is fleeting and life is short---It reminds us the ephemerality of life and to embrace the imperfection of the world.

JOHN KENNEDY COLLECTION

1. Love I AND 2. Love II

Handcraft leather-bound, hardcover oversized with lacquered wooden box.EDITION 500 | Year: 2004 | Size: Size: 13.5 H x 10.5 W inches

The sculptor John Kennedy (1931 – 2004) is widely known for his graceful bronze figures, which adorn parks, campuses, and public buildings around the world. Two of his most famous sculptures are Spirit of Audrey, dedicated to Audrey Hepburn and located at the UNICEF Headquarters in New York City, and The Entertainer, the official bronze award given every year to winners of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Kennedy sought to reveal the intimacy of loving relationships by giving these abstract figures recognizable gestures and poses, such as the caress of a hand or a gentle embrace. He once said of his creative process: “You can tell so much from a figure’s body language. Even the tilt of the head shows a particular mood or emotion. In this way, the body is a vehicle for the expression of the spirit.”Kennedy’s distinctive style of bronzes have attracted the attention of major collectors, such as Kirk Douglas, Gunter Sachs, Baron Thyssen, and Jim & Jackie Lee Houston, as well as the praise of art critics who noted that Kennedy’s engaging figures impel us “ to both touch them and be touched by them.”

Next Week in San Francisco - Lee Kuan Lian

Review by — Peter Frank, International Art Critic, Curator and Poet

“East and West met a long time ago. How does the coexistence of Eastern and Western visual traditions continue to evolve? In the art of Lee Kuan-Lian, the graphic languages of Asian and Caucasian are not simply brought together, but interwoven, to the point where a hybrid of traditions – as well as of traditional and contemporary expression – emerges from a single hand. Lee has mastered techniques associated with West and East and found common ground between them. She can create seamless blends of these disparate practices and, often in the very same works, contrast them dramatically. The faces and figures she renders seemingly jump off modern billboards and onto ancient scrolls; the inner turmoil of her human subjects radiates outward and troubles the placid ponds that reflect them. Lee directs the poetry of Asian pictorialism in the theater of Euro-American visual space. Her images suspend between time and place, scene and enactment. The “reflection” Lee seeks is not simply the presence of a figure in water, but a thought in a gesture. It is also the mirroring and merging of artistic traditions from opposite sides of the globe in and into one another. There is a further dimension to Lee’s reflection, an entirely non-objective one brought to life with Xuan paper and pure light – a very modern use for a very old material. But here, it is the drama of the human condition Lee displays, a drama that well predates East and West.”

Soul dancer-Hope Zarro. Even if you have only seen one of artist Hope Zarro’s works, you will be attracted by her free-flowing, majestic images. In her two-dimensional spaces, this artist seems possessed of some mysterious, supernatural power; without any hesitation, she has a plan in mind and completes it in one go. The pictures are relaxed and relaxing, leaving a dance of freedom, with infinite charm. The brushstrokes are clean and intentional, not sloppy or random. The colors are elegant and noble; the style is cool and fresh. Zarro’s work takes viewers from two-dimensions to multi-dimensional space-time, soaring endlessly.
Looking at Hope Zarro’s work, it is naturally reminiscent of the works of abstract expressionist masters such as Clyfford Still and Jasper Johns. The strength seems to explode, but it is still elegant and self-contained, unadorned, and delicate in the rough. Gender seems to disappear here, the artist seems to have traveled through the past and the present, and the artistic expression and imagination of these predecessors are flowing in the blood of her soul.
In today’s diverse expression of art, any technique, material or language seems to be unable confidently to claim originality. At the same time, we seem to have lost our ability to expect and interpret works of art. However, Hope Zarro’s abstract expressionist work brings us a new reason, a powerful response to the “death of painting.”

I am summoned by a force other than me to be in the presence of the NOW. There is an energy that guided me , I don’t hear it , it’s just in my hands . It shows me without my say , it truly is a summons to create something that I don't plan, that I don't think about, I am summoned to be in the now and let the painting come through me. I've been summoned to do this work and to live and be this work. It calls me too nestle into silliness, know there is no fear, to let go and allow the work to unfold with no resistance and know there is no such thing as a mistake.

NOW REPRESENTING HOPE ZARRO

ACCA’s is pleased to announce the representation of Hope Zarro. Her artworks are all about empowerment. She describes her signature “fabstracts” freestyle technique as intuitive and evocative as herself.

Hope Zarro was born in Woodstock NY up in the Catskill Mountains . Her father was an artist, a painter. Her mother was a fine artist, a sculptor and her grandfather was a world famous classical pianist, and a professor at the world renowned Juilliard School and always kept Hope very close to the Museums in New York City. She grew up viewing the work of some of the most famous painters and grandfathers music of Mozart , Bach and Rachmaninov.

Hope has been an artist all her life ; she started drawing and painting and experimenting with colors at the age of seven . She studied sculpting , pottery, painting and drawing. Hope always excelled among her peers in art classes, all through high school and while attending the Juilliard School in New York City .

While attending The Juilliard School she was working on the Broadway musicals like Cats and Chicago designing hair and make up for character design , for film and tv. Later she relocated to Los Angeles where she quickly started working on several TV shows doing hair and make up for MTV, The Style Network and the USA Network. Hope continued painting while working and attended The Kline Academy of Fine Art in LA. Hope’s creativity moved her towards working and painting on canvas. She fell in love with large scale contemporary abstract art , the movement, the emotion , the rawness of texture and it’s ability to completely pull you out of the moment into another place inside of yourself. Her intention in her expression, is creating works that by mixing together different colors and textures , takes the viewer into an experience that evokes all dimensions of emotions that reside inside the human - mind , body, and soul. Hope’s work calls for your full presence , vulnerability and authenticity.

This exhibition is an exploration of the philosophical symbols of a 6th Century Chinese philosopher, LAO TZU, through my experience with traditional Chinese culture. A culture richly embedded in the creation of contemporary ink painting. A most important concept of Lao Tzu is one that he identified as, “The Unity of Opposites”.

“REFLECTION” is a visual investigation of the inner and outer sides of people, revealing the“Unity of Opposites”. My ink paintings depict not only each person’s outward appearance, but their inward thoughts – a REFLECTION of their “real” self. With the evolution of our online social world, I have watched people develop more and more obvious multiple personalities. This phenomenon provided the fuel and inspiration for “REFLECTION”. ~ Lee Kuan Lian /June 2022

LEE KUAN LIAN brush paints her way into the very soul of her subjects. We recognize their expressions of thought because we have seen them staring back at us from our own mirrors. Her monotone pallet pays homage to centuries past, satisfying her heartfelt loyalty to ancient tradition. We know where she’s going – but then we don’t. Because she’s switched gears, thrown in an edgy twist – and we find that East meets West. ~ Julienne Johnson / June 2022 / ACCA GALLERY
