𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝘁𝗼 currently teaches at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. As a teacher, it is her desire to do more than demonstrate what dance and technique look like, but rather to impart an understanding of how to achieve desired results. Her teaching seeks to achieve a blending of artistry, integrity and musicality along with a knowledge of movement, placement and technique.

She began her training and performing career with Ballet Celeste, founded by Ms. Merriam Lanova. Later important influences included Alan Howard, Richard Gibson, Henry Berg, Sue Loyd, Ronn Guidi and Maggie Black. She danced with Oakland Ballet from 1975 - 1980, BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio from 1980 - 1982, and returned to the Oakland Ballet in 1983, retiring the following year. She was an editor for Ronn Guidi’s 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺. This book resides in the San Francisco Performing Arts Library. It tells the story of Ronn’s life and the founding of the Oakland Ballet.

On Friday, February 18 at 7pm PST, Eiko will present three of her evocative short films at Mills College (@millsdancedepartment), followed by a conversation between her and artist/scholar Sheldon Smith. This presentation is open to the public, both in-person and via live stream. ASL interpretation will be provided.

The films to be screened, all created during the pandemic, include “A Body in a Cemetery” (15 min), an edited recording of her September 2020 performance in Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, mourning the dead from the pandemic as well as from past centuries; and “Projecting Fukushima in Tokyo” (35 min), which captures Eiko performing throughout Tokyo’s streets and underground locations, marking the 10-year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Eiko will conclude the evening with a report on her new work, “Slow Turn,” which includes a monologue performed on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks along the Hudson River near where the Twin Towers once stood.

This screening marks Eiko’s first public event after turning 70.
