Benton Intermediate School

📚✏️ Teacher appreciation week coming to an end at Benton Intermediate School! 📚✏️

So thankful for all that they do for our kids and community.

Glad you all enjoyed your donut morning and a big thank you to YUMMY DONUT in Benton.
We wanted to end this year and say THANK YOU to everyone who supported us.

We didn’t know what to expect after 2020 not just with the things going on in the world, but here locally we had the biggest hail storm here in the Benton area that we’ve ever seen. Over 700 claims just in Benjamin Lee State Farm office alone. It was tough but we made it.

2021 turned out to be the best year we’ve ever had, Benjamin Lee State Farm finished out the year in the top for our area, and that’s because of you guys, the trust and support you show us.

It makes it possible to turn around and support our local schools like Benton Intermediate School Benton High School Benton Elementary, Plain Dealing High School/Elementary and other local businesses. We are excited for 2022 with big goals in mind.

What is a goal you have for this year? Do you do a resolution or a word of the year?

Thank you again for a wonderful 2021. We are looking forward to sharing some BIG changes in the next year!

-Benjamin, Tammy, Heather, Ashley, and Sam

Students in 5th grade Social Studies celebrated a Colonial Christmas during class. While sipping cider, the students created tea light pictures with toothpicks and tin foil. While they may have celebrated a simpler time, some of their tea light creations were quite intricate! Lovely job, 5th graders!

What a surprise! Bossier Parish Schools Superintendent Mitch Downey, along with many other representatives from the district, stopped by BIS today to share the news that Cory Craig was selected as the Bossier Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year! Cory Joy Craig is one of our amazing band directors at Benton Intermediate School. Raised much of her life in foster care, Craig credits music for pulling her from despair and has since dedicated her life to music education in hopes of providing the same experience to others that are impoverished or abused. Craig is currently the Alumnus of the Year in the College of Music at Louisiana Tech, a GRAMMY Music Educator Award Nominee Finalist for the 2022 GRAMMY Academy Awards and is now a Semi-Finalist for the 2023 GRAMMY Music Educator Award.

Help us wish her luck as she advances to the regional level of the Teacher of the Year competition!

Families, due to the threat of significant weather for Tuesday, December 13th, ALL after school activities are cancelled today. This includes, but is not limited to: Tutoring, 5th Grade Running Club, any Band activities, and any BPAR practices. These are just the items listed on the BIS Calendar, but any other activities that were not placed on the calendar that were going to take place today will be cancelled as well. We would also like to address the issue of early dismissal. That is a rumor and is untrue. Bossier Parish Schools does plan on completing the rest of the school day as normal with only our after school activities being cancelled. You, of course, reserve the right to check out your student as you see fit, but regular attendance standards will apply. Stay safe and dry, Tigers!

Our 5th grade Running Club is tearing through the Kids on the Run racing series with some serious hardware! In their latest race, Tinley Lyles won the whole race! If you watch the video, it looks like she came in second, but the young man who crossed the finish line before her is the volunteer pace runner for the competition! Tinley was the first registered participant to cross that snowy line! All of our runners did a fantastic job. Coach Vance is very proud of everyone! Keep up the great work, Tiger runners! (Note: had to add videos in the comments)

3D Printer for Innovation, a project from Mrs. McKenna

The AIM North Center is housed at BIS. Students from all over the north side of the parish come for AIM services. Mrs. McKenna, one of the North Center AIM teachers, has a Donor's Choose project we're sure she wouldn't mind you sharing out in the community! We cannot wait to see what kind of interesting things our AIM students are able to print with a new 3D printer!

BIS members of STARBASE 2.0 got to experience a first recently. 6th grade students in the program have long designed and built carbon dioxide race cars, but have only ever raced them at the school level. This year's STARBASE 2.0 groups from across the parish got to meet at Barksdale Airforce Base for a parish-wide race day. While waiting for their opportunity to race, students saw presentations from EOD and the base Fire Department. So, get ready for a photo dump of epic proportions!

Even though the December Art Club meetings were a par-tay, the students still had time to crank out some festive elf feet! Check out the good time that was had by all at this week's meetings!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! BIS is at it again! Each year Raising Cane's hosts a Color Your Cane Contest, and for the second year in a row, a BIS student is Top Dog! To the delight of Mrs. Flowers' homeroom class, Jacob Ooten won 1st place out of the Shreveport/Bossier Schools that entered the contest! As a result, Jacob won a super sweet swag bag loaded to the top with Raising Cane's merch and gift cards and his classmates all got gift cards for Kids Combos! Special thanks to Mrs. King who is always looking for ways to showcase our talented BIS students' art!

Congratulations to Mrs. Lynn Jacob, Ms. Connie Hardin, and Mrs. Sarah Flowers! These lovely ladies were so nice this year, that Santa is visiting them early thanks to the generosity of the Sydney Biedenharn Educators Endowment! Each of these teachers wrote a grant to update the technology in their classrooms to improve student engagement. And while that is not quite the same as a letter to the Big Guy in Red, their wishes were granted! We cannot wait to see our students' eyes light up when they see the wonderful content these teachers are able to bring!

Just Be-Clause, a Project of Geaux 4 Kids, provides presents and gift cards to teens ages 13-18 in Caddo Parish Schools and Bossier Parish Schools as well as teens entering foster care in this region. Check out the infographic for how you can help brighten the holiday of this often overlooked age group!

Not sure what to get that 6th grader in your life during the holiday season? How about a trip to Medieval Times in the spring? The Social Studies department has sent home all the deets about the trip, and now you can find them here too! The permission slip has been uploaded as pictures, but you can swing by the BIS App to find a PDF of the permission form suitable for printing! The trip is one size fits all, but seats are filling fast. Get your form filled out and returned today. The trip can be paid for through SchoolCash Online, check, or money order!

It's crazy to believe it's already time to talk about spring sports, but we are! Coach TerHaar is hosting a Golf Team Information Meeting on Wednesday, December 14th after school in the Library. The meeting will run from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. Any 5th or 6th grade student interested in being a part of this great sport is welcome to attend... just make sure your ride is on time picking you up!

Baby got snacks! If by baby you mean BIS! To raise some funds for all that sweet, sweet PBIS swag and rewards as the year goes on, BIS will be selling snacks in the mornings in the commons. Shop from 7:20 to 7:40, but you are still at the mercy of your teachers as to whether you will be able to eat those snacks in their classrooms. Don’t fall victim to a snack attack, stock up before the school day begins! See you bright and early in the commons, Tigers!

The elf has found Mr. Valentine’s office and apparently he is a snowball fight champion! Can’t wait to see what else he gets into!

Our friends from Mrs. Worn and Mrs. Warren's class participated in a district-wide field trip to Holiday Lanes right before Thanksgiving Holiday. The trip was just in time for Turkey Day because when you bowl three strikes in a row, it's called a turkey! Whether they bowled a turkey or not, with this much fun and games, we bet Mrs. Worn and Mrs. Warren were still ready for a nap when they got home!

What tastes great with some Thanksgiving turkey and fixin's? How about an archery victory! The BIS Archery Team got just that at the start of the Thanksgiving holiday! The team participated in and won the Haughton Butterball Archery Tournament on November 19th. BIS took first place with an overall score of 2908 and 69 bullseyes! The next highest scoring team finished with only 2577 points and only 31 bullseyes! That's some great shooting, Tigers!

6th graders and parents, they say that life is what happens while you make plans. The folks at Benton Middle School are offering you the opportunity to plan to have the time of your life between your child's 7th and 8th grade years! Mr. Engle at BMS is heading up a summer 2024 trip to the Mediterranean! Check out the infographic below about how you can be a part of this trip after your trip across the parking lot to the middle school!

BIS Student Council is hoping you'll remember it's better to give than to receive this holiday season as they host their annual hat drive for cancer patients. Any student who brings in a new beanie hat will have his or her name entered into a drawing for a prize to be name later. You can also donate through our SchoolCash Online page, or go directly to the Student Council Amazon Wish List! With so many ways to spread good cheer, it's not just heads that will be warmed, but hearts as well!

5th grade Art students were recently asked to Show Your Independence and it paid off big time! Check out the students below whose art is now officially worth two end-zone bench seats at the 2022 Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. Those tickets are $30 each, so winners don't sleep on that deal! Make sure you bring that winning certificate over to 401 Market Street in Shreveport to claim your prize by December 20th.

Congratulations to Ms. Hardin’s homeroom in 5th grade and Ms. Thompson’s 1st block ELA class in 6th grade. They were the classes with the most students to meet their AR point and average goals for the 1st nine weeks. They celebrated with a cookie cake treat during class.

You have until December 20th to meet your AR goals for the 2nd nine weeks. Keep reading and we may be recognizing your class next time.

November also saw the BIS Student Council choose some raffle winners from among the generous students who brought in craft supplies for StuCo's Little Tiger Craft Drive for the students of Benton Head Start Center. The goal was to raise enough supplies to put together 40 kits to get our littlest Tigers expressing creativity through crafting. Congratulations to these lucky winners! Thank you to everyone who donated for this great cause!

The catching up continues into Art where Mrs. King also celebrated Dia los Mu***os by having the student create some lovely and lively sugar skulls. These skulls are "glowing" example of the Day's celebration of life!

Photos from Benton Intermediate School's post 11/29/2022

We are playing a little bit of catch up today! There are just so many awesome things happening here at Benton Intermediate School, that we don't want you to miss a thing! So, let's start back at the beginning of the month:
Senorita Arguelles 6th grade Spanish classes celebrated a traditional Day of the Dead this year. Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Mu***os) is a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members who have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations! Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. It is unlike any holiday because mourning is exchanged for celebration!

We would love to spotlight some of our BIS Tigers who are excelling outside of the classroom! Gymnastics? Racing? Livestock Shows? Volunteer Work? We have so much talent on our campus and we want to brag on our kids. Post your pictures below along with your child's name and a brief description. We will share these on KBIS news during some of our upcoming broadcasts.
