Why You Should Work Less and Spend More Time on Hobbies

Just off the water kitesurfing this afternoon. It was awesome Kiting in the sunset!! Especially after finishing a busy work week. I agree that hobbies are healthy and that everyone benefits when workers have hobbies outside of work! The worker winds down and uses their brain or body in another fashion, the employer gets fresher worker bees after they’ve had some balance, and maybe even the worker’s friends and family benefit as they spend time with the person doing the hobby together.

Why You Should Work Less and Spend More Time on Hobbies As professionals around the world feel increasingly pressed for time, they’re giving up on things that matter to them. A recent HBR article noted that in surveys, most people “could name several activities, such as pursuing a hobby, that they’d like to have time for.” This is more significan...

Life Hack: Dealing with Anger

In life we all experience this from time to time. Anger is never pleasant, can be scary, and can really hurt. But, it’s a clue that something deeper is going on, which may or may not have anything to do with you or what actually happened in that moment. Look at it as an opportunity for deeper communication and problem solving, if it’s not swept under the rug to appear later when you least expect it. As Dr Stephen Covey once said, “unexpressed feelings never die, they’re buried alive and come forth later in uglier ways”.

For the angry person:
Everyone’s responsible for healing their own triggers so we don’t see the world through that lens (wounds or fears). Dig deep to analyze the trigger that’s driving the anger, what needs to be resolved internally? Has this person or their words reminded you of a past experience with someone? Or is this person saying or doing something specific that worries you? What was the exact triggering word or behavior? How did that make you feel? Is there a better way to respond to the person in front of you? Can you work in expressing yourself more clearly your needs/expectations before anger hits? Do you swing from saying nothing about your irritation to blowing up? When you feel anger bubbling up, can you instead remove yourself? Is there a code word the two of you can agree upon when you feel that tension, which would allow you to both stop talking (and come back to it later, as needed?) How do you feel after you’ve lashed out in anger, Guilty? Embarrassed? Worried? Would it be helpful for you to get to the bottom of your anger with a Coach or Counselor, if you can’t see the real issue yourself?

For the receiving person: We can ask ourselves (or ask them later, once calmed down) what the trigger is that we have tripped in the person, and (if we love the person) how to try and prevent the anger response? Try not to escalate with a defensive reaction and just notice like an observer what is taking place in the moment. Try to diffuse the anger by paraphrasing the others words/feelings. This diffuses their emotion, and the episode can be resolved more quickly. Try not to question them in the moment, which can incite more anger. Paraphrase their words, then if nothing changes, remove yourself if needed. Just stop the discussion. Later, when both are calm, have a sensitive discussion. Use phrases like “help me understand...”
If still unresolved after you’ve attempted a discussion, and it doesn’t sit well with you, seek out a Coach or Counselor to help work through the situation and train you both to avoid the trigger or to handle it with new responses. If anger is a “go to” response in someone, it could simply be their own issue that needs to be resolved.- they need to do the internal work themselves first. You may choose to either be patient with them, or, if you deem its toxic and a consistent behavior, remove yourself from them entirely for your own well being. (Remember, no decision is also a decision).

Anger is typically a clue that someone feels an old wound or some fear about you or something else. It can also be a sign that one of their values has been trampled on. The tips above can help you determine which one, and how to resolve through new behaviors and agreements. And, more importantly, you will grow closer to the person through sensitive, well intended communication and by your both being transparent and vulnerable.

We all want smooth sailing in our relationships, and most of us have fears and old baggage. But with the right person, they can help you unpack.

To your relationship success!

Do you ever wonder why some people get what they want and others don’t?
Great careers, great relationships, great life? Want to know the secret? It’s not luck as you may suspect. It’s ‘mind over matter’.

The people I know who seem to always achieve their wildest dreams are the ones who manifest it in their minds first. In neuroscience studies, it’s been proven that the mind cannot distinguish between what is ‘real’ and what is ‘imagined’! Why is that significant? Because what you visualize in your minds eye and what you put ‘out there’ that you want will undoubtedly transpire in your life! It’s magical.

How do I use this amazing concept of mind over matter? Three ways:

1) visualizing exercises: playing a story in your mind from beginning to end, in great detail using all 5 of your senses, of your desired result

2) meditating/prayer: finding your quiet place to focus/ask for help and give thanks that it’s already happening

3) operating on the ‘as if’ principle:
Act as if it’s already being orchestrated for you, taking steps - in faith - towards your goal assuming the wheels are in motion

These 3 steps are what have brought me so many gifts...my wonderful husband (later in life, after being a young widow paralyzed by grief and fear), achievements in my career (traveling the world working with Fortune 100 clients, making a good living while working on flexible schedule), learning cool hobbies/sports (kitesurfing, an extreme sport that was challenging for me to learn- now I teach it to others), and living in multiple places to achieve an outdoor lifestyle (mountain and beach homes, best of both worlds).

Hey, no-ones life is perfect, including mine! Yet, I’m really satisfied with the place I find myself in at this stage in life.
Some may say it’s luck...I say it’s mind over matter! Try it, you’ll like it.
And if you need a little help, I’m a Certified Life Coach (since 2006, before it was cool)...let’s strategize together so you can live your best version of yourself🤩

To your success! Holly

“YOU CAN’T DO A GOOD JOB IF YOUR JOB IS ALL YOU DO.”
– Katie Thurmes

As high achievers, it’s hard to slow down, take a break, reassess and focus on what’s most important - whats right in front of us. And as someone who taught and coached others around life/work balance for years, I’m excited to be in a period of time now where I can focus my time and energy this year on my family and personal goals without working so much. Helping others (and myself) without being paid to do so...all because it feeds my soul.
