Juneteenth, now a national holiday, marks an important turning point in American history. It’s a moment to recognize that the fight for racial equality remains a priority for all of us.

Juneteenth is also a day to celebrate those making an impact in the Black community. Let’s continue to learn about our history and leverage anti-discrimination resources to deepen understanding of the work that still needs to be done.

Happy Juneteenth!

“I am beyond excited to serve as the vice president of the premier Atlanta chapter of AABE for the remainder of 2021. I really appreciate the warm welcome notes and messages. Former Vice President Tremese Davis certainly left some big shoes to fill and I am honored to fulfill the vision she and Madam President Antoinette Jackson set forth. I’ve been a part of AABE for years and the organization is near and dear to my heart. I look forward to continuing the work and continuing the amazing work of AABE Atlanta in 2021 by providing quality programing and services as well as increasing the awareness of energy-related matters in our communities.”

– Madam Vice President April Zoebisch

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are working to become greener each year. Whether developing on-campus recycling centers, offering courses in environmental studies, getting solar-energy on campus or opening new LEED certified campus buildings, HBCU’s are at the forefront in promoting sustainability and a healthier planet.

A lot of engineering is involved when it comes to clean energy at HBCU’s, watch this video to learn more: https://players.brightcove.net/18122129001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6215480865001

If women and girls in this country are making any progress on shattering the negative stereotypes of what they can do in mathematics and engineering, they have Katherine Johnson to thank for helping to pave the way.

Ms. Johnson was a pioneer at NASA and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics between 1930 and 1970. She, along with other black women, helped make critical calculations that launched our astronauts into orbit.

But as important, the challenges they fought through inspired generations of women, and especially women of color, who came after them to believe that they too could succeed.

Today, as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., let’s think about some powerful lesson ideas:

1. Who are the Civil Rights’ Activists of today?

2. What was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s dream and how are we supporting this in today’s world? How could we do better? How could you support this in your lives?

3. What is “Good Trouble?” When do we know we are engaging in Good Trouble? The concept of Good Trouble was coined by John Lewis. Who was he?

4. If you wrote your own Dream Speech for the world to listen to today, what would it say?

5. It is 20 years from now and you are writing a letter about all the things you have done to make the world a better place. What does your letter say?
