๐Ÿ€ Team-sport athletes rarely reach maximal velocity: True maximum speed is only possible with familiar movement patterns.

๐Ÿˆ As movement complexity rises, the ability to express speed is compromised. That said, a case has also been made that a higher maximal velocity has a greater โ€˜knock-on effectโ€™ for all other sprint abilities (the so-called โ€˜speed reserveโ€™).

An analogy here can be made with maximal muscle strength, where an important side effect of improving maximal muscle strength through heavy resistance training is a marked increase in explosive muscle strength โ€“ especially in developing athletes.โ€‹

(We discuss this in detail in the Course - Need for Speed).

๐ŸŽฝ It is also clear that while the three phases generally considered in research on speed expression - Acceleration, Attainment of Maximal Speed, and Maintenance of Maximal Speed - might be sufficient for researchers and coaches in the SPRINT world, this is not the case for those interested in the relevance of speed to TEAM SPORTS.

๐Ÿฅ Given the need to consider the training requirements of the multitude of speed demands, it is important to understand that โ€˜speedโ€™ covers a greater collection of sub-components, representing a spectrum of energetically-determined conditioning abilities, and information-oriented coordinative skills.

This is inclusive of:

โ˜‘๏ธ Maximum Aerobic Speed
โ˜‘๏ธ Low Intensity Speed
โ˜‘๏ธ Moderate Intensity Speed
โ˜‘๏ธ High Intensity Speed
