Navigating disagreements with your child’s school can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. In this session, a special education attorney will walk you through your rights and the different ways to resolve conflicts, from collaborative options like meetings and mediation to more formal processes. You’ll learn what each option looks like, when to consider them, and how to move forward with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re feeling stuck or just want to better understand your options, this session will give you practical tools to advocate for your child.

LDA has serious concerns about the 21st Century Dyslexia Act: proposed legislation that seeks to remove dyslexia from the “Specific Learning Disability” category in the IDEA and establish it as its own category. The Act has been introduced in the House, and was referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce.
Separating dyslexia from other SLDs goes against current research, and can complicate services and interventions for students. The definition of dyslexia in the bill may also lead to misidentification.

In the United States, over 2.3 million students are diagnosed with a specific learning disability. Many of these students experience harm from stigmas about learning disabilities, which can follow them throughout their lives. LDA stands with NCLD in condemning these disparaging and inaccurate remarks. Read our full statement here: https://ldaamerica.org/ldas-statement-on-disparaging-comments-about-individuals-with-ld/

Kids need more than what to learn — they need to know how to learn. Many bright, capable students struggle with planning, organization, focus, and follow-through due to challenges with executive functioning.
These skills are the foundation for goal-setting, attention, problem-solving, and long-term success, yet they are rarely taught explicitly in school.
In this session, you’ll gain a clear understanding of executive functioning skills, how they impact learning, and why they are especially important for students with learning differences. You’ll also walk away with practical, family-friendly strategies you can begin using right away to support your child’s independence, confidence, and learning habits.
This session will be led by Caroline Sumners, CEO and Founder of Empower Academic Coaching. A former middle and high school teacher, Caroline saw firsthand how students were often labeled as unmotivated or disorganized when they had simply never been taught how to manage their learning. She founded Empower to bridge that gap.
Today, Caroline and her team partner with students, families, schools, and colleges to build sustainable systems for learning, self-advocacy, and success — helping students not just get through school, but truly thrive.

đź’™ LDA-GA was proud to be represented at LDACON 63 in St. Louis!
Our Board Member, Charell Coleman, led an impactful session on Powerful Parenting, highlighting the importance of shifting from traditional parenting approaches to Dr. Ross Greene’s Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) Framework.
We are grateful for her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to empowering families both in Georgia and beyond.
Her message was clear:
✨ Perspective shifts are necessary in today’s times.
✨ When we move from “fixing behavior” to understanding unmet needs, we create stronger connections and better outcomes for our children.
Thank you for representing LDA-GA! 👏🏽
