Growing healthy mouths, smiles and sounds!

Combining play with evidence based practices to create a foundation for learning, one word at a time.

Language delays can be exhibited by a slower onset of a language skill, rate of progression, and/ or the sequence in which the language skills are learned. Early intervention can stimulate a faster language development (ASHA, 2015) #teachspeech #helpingkids #languagedelay #earlyintervention #ashaigers #asha

Toddlers and preschoolers have been our speciality for nearly 20 years. We don’t advise parents to wait and see, especially at such a important developmental time for language and cognitive development.
“If they”re late, don’t wait!”

Many parents bring their concerns about their child not talking and all too often are told “Let’s just wait and see” by pediatricians- and often other parents and family members as well. But, this approach is outdated and has a negative impact on children with language delays. As parents, we want to set our kids up for success- and that means NOT waiting until your child has a SIGNIFICANT delay before you seek intervention- especially when you had concerns previously. So, go ahead and get an evaluation when you are first concerned- YOU ARE NOT CRAZY for doing this- even if your child turns out to not need therapy. The earlier intervention is started, the better likelihood your child will catch up to age level expectations and at a quicker rate!

The Thumbsucking Clinic

This is a common misconception, and I’m here to tell you, its completely untrue.

Many of the children I see at the Clinic who suck their thumbs or fingers were once pacifier suckers.

In fact, the thumb sucking sometimes starts AFTER the pacifier is taken away.

Children will find a way to get what they need.

And long term pacifier use comes with its own set of problems too.

What the research shows is this:

1. Pacifiers will tend to create overbite and over jet problems (teeth protrusion) which is a major risk factor for dental trauma and injury

2. Pacifier use tends to only be in the first few years of life, so there is some spontaneous correction of the teeth once its use has passed. The evidence does show that there may be permanent skeletal changes through (changes to the skeleton that cannot be undone)

3. Thumb and finger sucking tends to be more common in older children (although I have seen an 8 year old with a pacifier before!)

4. Thumb and finger sucking is harder to get rid of and easier to hide as well as more socially acceptable in the early childhood years compared to pacifier habits.

5. Both pacifiers and thumb/finger sucking can cause changes to the roof of the mouth, the teeth and the jaws in growing children.

So if you are a mother of an infant, please know, that there is absolutely not one preference over the other.

And most importantly, just because an infant sucks a pacifier, this DOES NOT protect them against becoming a thumb or finger sucker.

It's also important to remember that sucking is NORMAL in babies.

Infants progress from sucking to chewing behaviours in the first years of life, with the development of teeth and the introduction of solids....this is a slow and important process.

So please, stop telling parents that giving their kids a pacifier will stop them thumb sucking later on.

In my experience, in infancy, babies will usually prefer one or the other- either a thumb/finger OR a pacifier OR nothing.

You'll find that it’s very hard to “train” a thumbsucker to take a pacifier and vice versa.

But one thing is for sure - pacifiers should only be used for pacifying and should cease by 12 months, 18 months at the latest.

Also NEVER let your child walk around with a pacifier as they pose a risk of injury as well as impinge on speech and mouth development.

And thumb sucking and finger sucking should naturally cease around 3 years. If this isn't the case, try a few of my simple suggestions on our website blog. By 4 years old, if you are concerned, please see a health professional trained in the field of oral habits.

Eye spy: What the eyes can tell us about the mouth

"We can tell a lot by looking at the faces of our patients. The eyes really are the window to so much more than the soul. They are the window to the health of the airway and the window to the bone structure of the oral cavity and facial skeleton." Excellent article by our talented colleague Angie L of Oral Myofunctional Therapy of York.

Pediatricians Say Kids Need Simple Toys, Not iPads And Electronics

Well that’s no brainer! Skip the toys that are digital or scream “numbers, colors and shapes.” Children need toys that allow for open ended play (the child can play many different ways) which encourages creativity! Examples: a play kitchen, pretend food, cash register, musical Instruments.. so many choices!

healthy-holistic-living.com The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released a report saying that simple toys hold the most benefits for children.
