SPONSOR A CHILD THIS YEAR!! The 28th Annual Christmas with the Redskins Children’s Holiday Party will be held on Monday, December 18 from 6:30p - 9:30 pm at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner.

http://www.darrellgreen.com/christmaswiththeredskins/

Each year, Darrell Green and his family invite 150-200 underserved children from local community organizations to attend an evening of fun with current players from the Washington Redskins organization, representatives from the business community and other special guests.

Each child is partnered with a generous sponsor, who engages with that child throughout the evening and “plays Santa”. Each child enjoys a special night full of gifts, entertainment (arcade games, live entertainment, photo booths), autograph sessions with current Redskins football players and a special surprise towards the end of the evening - the ability to fill a huge sack with toys and books from a "secret toy room."

Individual sponsors are asked to purchase clothing items (a brand named sweat suit) a pair of premium sneakers, and age-appropriate toys (1-2 max) to present to a very special and deserving child that evening.

Additionally, as there will be players from the Washington Redskins team at the event, we ask sponsors to also purchase a nominally priced item that the child can use to collect autographs (items for autograph must be Redskins branded - hats, jerseys, autograph footballs, etc).

If you are interested in participating, please follow the link below and select "Sponsor a Child" or email [email protected] with subject "CWR Sponsor a Child" no later than November 16.

They will be providing you with specific information on your child over the next 1-2 weeks.

This is an AMAZING EVENT that embodies what Christmas is all about! The blessing is in the GIVING!

A few DLAC Brothers also payed homage to the historic Josephine City School in Berryville, VA. It was built in 1882 by the formerly enslaved and freed Blacks. This was a very informative trip and we will be partnering with them in future.

Bonus: Next door to the school is a historical marker for Lucy Diggs Slowe, a founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a first cousin to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Founder Elder Watson Diggs. 👌🏾♦️

Happy Birthday Founder John Milton Lee!

Lee was a scholar, loyal and tireless worker for the growth of the Fraternity and because of his idealist character was commonly referred to as ‘a dreamer’, was born in Danville, Indiana on September 7, 1890 and was the third of four children.

He attended public schools in Danville and enrolled at Indiana University in 1910. He completed three years of pre-medical work before leaving the university. In 1914, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania but withdrew for health reasons. In 1915, he became a student at Temple University but was compelled to leave due to a death in the family.

Lee enlisted in the Army in 1917. He was a non-commissioned officer assigned to Battery F, 349th Field Artillery Regiment, 167th Field Artillery Brigade of the 92nd Division. The Division organized at Fort Dix (New Jersey) in November 1917. The Field Artillery component was the first Negro Artillery Regiment in the history of the military. Lee subsequently served overseas as a Sergeant First Class and Gunner. His battery enjoys the unique distinction of having been the first Battery of Negro Artillerymen ever to open fire upon an enemy. He was an associate editor of Modern Artillerymen, the official record of Battery F.

Lee helped organize, and for several years was president of the Fairview Golf Club, the first Negro Golf Club in Pennsylvania. For two years, he was the editor of The Golfer, the monthly publication of the Fairview Golf Club. In 1931, he was married to Mary Walker Robinson.

Vocationally, he was engaged in several enterprises. For eight years, Lee conducted a successful catering business in Philadelphia; he organized and served as Vice-President and Secretary of the Mutual Emergency Union, a mutual aid company in Philadelphia. He was also a member of the Board of Managers of the Columbia Community Branch of the YMCA.

Frederick W. "Duke" Slater was a sports icon and native Illinoisan.

Slater came to the University of Iowa in 1918. While at the University, he excelled in the classroom and on the football field as a standout Tackle, and lettered in that sport as a freshman. In 1921, Slater was named to the All-American Team, the first Black to receive that honor at Iowa. Also, while at the University of Iowa, he was named to the All-Big Ten Team for three consecutive years – still playing without a helmet. Slater was also the sixth Black to earn the honor of being named All-American in college football history.

Slater graduated in 1921 and later returned to Iowa to receive an LL.B. in 1928. In between that time frame, Slater made his NFL debut, October 1, 1922, with the Rock Island Independents (1922-1925), briefly with the Milwaukee Badgers (1922) and the Chicago Cardinals (1926-1931), becoming one of five Black players in the league at that time and the first Black lineman in NFL history.
The NFL completely excluded Blacks from their league 1934-1945. He was the first NFL lineman of any race to make All-Pro teams in seven different seasons. Slater was instrumental in assembling All-Star teams of Black players and served as the Chicago Negro All-Stars (1933) coach. He subsequently became a coach of Black semi-professional teams, the Chicago Brown Bombers (1937), the Chicago Comets (1939), and the Chicago Panthers (1940). Slater’s career made a positive impact on the NFL. He also served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Negro All-Stars in 1938 in a high-profile exhibition game staged at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears.
Slater, a 1918 Gamma Chapter initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., served as Polemarch of the Chicago (IL) Alumni Chapter (1954).

Slater was posthumously selected among the Centennial Slate of Pro Football Hall of Fame members for the Class of 2020 in January 2020. He was formally enshrined with modern-era players, coaches, and fellow “Senior” inductees in the Hall of Fame on August 7, 2021, during ceremonies in Canton, Ohio. 👌🏾♦️
