We are a Reggio Emilia inspired early childhood school located in Ashburn, Virginia serving children aged 6 weeks through 12 years old.
Through the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach, children are given the tools and support to steer through their own distinct paths of discovery. Our project-based curriculum encourages children to be active participants in the learning process and to develop the skills needed to explore their ideas, interests, and questions in a meaningful way.
Mission: The mission of The Compass School is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes your child's depth of knowledge while inspiring a life-long love of learning.
Here's a glimpse of some of our Trailblazers Twos students getting creative in the Atelier this morning.
The new season of Miss Jasmine's Art Class is off to such a fun- and wonderfully messy- start!

We hope everyone enjoyed a merry and bright Christmas holiday yesterday! We're back in business at The Compass School today- and dreaming of the amazing Teacher Appreciation Hot Cocoa Bar our parents sponsored last week.
Compass Families, we appreciate YOU, too!

We had THE BEST TIME at our Winter class parties on Wednesday! Thanks so much to all the family and friends who joined in or sent treats- the sugar high was 110% worth it!
Our pets' newest flatmate- joining Rosie the Anole Lizard, Griffin the Leopard Gecko, and a tank full of fish- is Bruce the Gerbil! We decided it was only fitting to name Bruce after a Super Hero, as he is definitely super cute. Classes were given a list of names (Steve, Parker, Tony, or Bruce) and voted last week via a ballot box in the Plaza. 🐭
Everyone, meet Bruce. Bruce, meet everyone.
The Compass School is steadfast in its mission to facilitate once- in- a- lifetime experiences for our students. That happened again last Friday when, after months of coordination, Miss Fayzah was able to take her Art Studio Pre-Kindergarten class on a field trip to The White House!
The "scenery" was simultaneously beautiful and educational, and fully captured the attention of both our students and the parents who were able to take time out to come along on our Big City adventure.
Three words: Parents'. Night. Out.
Thanks to our wonderful teachers who spent their Friday night giving extra cuddles and doling out movie snacks- and to all the little friends who stayed up late with us to craft, explore the Light and Shadow lab, and watch Frosty The Snowman. We hope all the parents who participated enjoyed their well-deserved evening off!
Our Think Tank Preschool students had a blast exploring the accordion yesterday!
(And, yes, we think Miss Leia and Miss Alysia are VERY brave.)
Watch out, Fireman Sam- there's a new crew in town! Firefighters M. and P. saved the Pathfinders toddler classroom from paper fire annihilation today, leaving us with one very important question-
Does this mean we can get a Dalmation?!?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our Think Tank 3 year old classroom. Thanks, L, for helping your classmates with your expert level tree trimming abilities! 🌲
Our Art Studio Pre-Kindergarten class had a wonderful time choosing a Christmas tree with Miss Fayzah and Mr. Matt.
Thanks, Meadows Farms Nurseries and Landscape, for letting our curious little visitors come explore!
Thank you so much to the friends and family who joined our little turkeys for the Thanksgiving dessert party yesterday! We were so impressed by all the goodies created by your tiny chefs and wish you the happiest of holidays together.
🦃 See you on Monday! 🦃
Thank you for thinking of us, Symsack family-
The infants in our Explorers and Navigators classrooms are so excited to investigate all of their interesting new toys!
Pretty sure you'd eat a little healthier if your fruit salads were being made by Miss Cara and Miss Kristen's adorable Pathfinders (Toddlers) sous chefs, too!
Inventor's Workshop (Twos) cooked up some... "inventive" new habitats for their animal friends today!
Hurricane Florence wasn't going to get US down! Last Friday, we had a "Hurricane Day" here at The Compass School, inviting students and teachers to wear their comfiest pjs and join us for s'mores (Thanks, Miss Diana!) and stories in the school plaza. Miss Katelin even built a "fire" and piped in some camping sounds (Think: crackling fires, crickets, hooting owls!) for our classes to enjoy.
Miss Brittany's Inventor's Workshop Twos students went
🏕️CAMPING🏕️ in their classroom last week. There was an indoor "campfire," a bear hunt led by flashlight, and rest time complete with pajamas and sleeping bags!
The Inventors were very courageous while facing all the dangers of the wild- Miss Brittany most of all! (I mean, who's brave enough to take eight 2 year olds on a camping trip?!?)
Miss Elizabeth and Miss Casey's Trailblazers Twos class had a SMOKIN' GOOD time during their visit from Ashburn Volunteer Fire Rescue Department - AVFRD!
Thanks so much, guys, for coming out to visit us here at The Compass School. The students are still talking about exploring your "super cool" fire engine and ambulance.🚒🚑🔥
Little Hands music stopped by our plaza during pick up last week for a fun, hands-on-drumsticks demonstration with students and parents alike.
The program is open to all ages and the next session at Compass begins this week. Come join our drum circle!🎶
Thank you to all the "special someones" who joined us for our Goodies with Grandparents activity on Friday. We loved crafting (and cookie-ing!) with you!
Somehow, they managed to have even S'MORE fun learning about fire in Miss Elizabeth's Trailblazers (Twos) classroom today!
(Save some for the Front Desk, please, Friends! )
Miss Ilu's Preschool (3s) class had THE BEST time making bouncy balls today. Three cheers for science!⚗️🔎👩🔬
Just a little handwriting practice in our Art Studio Pre-Kindergarten classroom this morning...
Our Pathfinders Toddler class made no-bake pizzas as part of their new unit on Foods today! With the help of their teachers, Miss Kristen and Miss Cara, they layered on sauce, cheese, and pepperoni, then ate their creations.
I scream, You scream, We all scream for
S U M M E R!!

We swear it's a thing. (Don't you feel better already?)
Our Art Studio Pre-Kindergarten class spent a hot morning visiting with four-legged friends at Leesburg Animal Park today! From donkeys to zebras, camels to goats, and rabbits to gibbons- students observed, fed, and interacted with a wide variety of animals, then went on a wagon ride and explored the playground!

Our CompassQuest Summer Campers had a moooooo-velous time visiting South Mountain Creamery in Middletown, Maryland today! Campers went on a guided tour, learning all about the milking process and the cows' life at the Creamery (Who knew Cows get pedicures?!)- then enjoyed some delicious ice cream, homemade on the premises.
Thanks for letting us visit, South Mountain- Sophia was wonderful!💘🐮🍦
Yesterday was "Doughnut Day" for our Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten classrooms.
From reading the recipe, to gathering the ingredients, to mixing and baking- these yummy, allergy friendly treats were a hit!
A few clouds in the sky couldn't keep our Inventor's Workshop Twos class from Water Play-
The playground absolutely *BUBBLED* with fun this morning!
Thanks for another great visit, Waltonwood Ashburn- Our Sound Stage and Art Studio Pre-K classes loved visiting your residents to sing about our Grand Old Flag today! (And the cookies and juice didn't hurt, either!🇺🇸️ )
CompassQuest Summer Camp took the party all the way to Maryland today for a hands-on trip to Glen Echo Park Aquarium!
Who says kids get to have all the fun??
(Mr. Matt miiiiiiight have had more fun than our Art Studio Pre-K students on their summer field trip to Kid Junction yesterday!)
