The Compass School, Ashburn Virginia

We are a Reggio Emilia inspired early childhood school located in Ashburn, Virginia serving children aged 6 weeks through 12 years old.

Through the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach, children are given the tools and support to steer through their own distinct paths of discovery. Our project-based curriculum encourages children to be active participants in the learning process and to develop the skills needed to explore their ideas, interests, and questions in a meaningful way.

Mission: The mission of The Compass School is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes your child's depth of knowledge while inspiring a life-long love of learning.

Another week at home, another project to enjoy! Rowan from Art Studio wanted to share this one with her friends.

How are you going to stay busy this week?

Wet and dry chalk Activity
Just what it sounds like. Offer water in a cup with chalk. Can do on sturdy paper, maybe poster board or art paper. Or sidewalk and other washable, gritty surfaces. Could be interesting on sand paper or large tiles and rocks. They can dip the chalk, not dip it, grind it away, wet the surface and draw on that, crush up the chalk, anything! They're little scientists discovering everything they can.. It could be interesting to try to grind it with a mortar and pestle. Or they could get primitive and use a large stone surface and a smaller stone as a tool.

9 Chores Every Child Can Do to Earn Allowance

Compass families, are you ready to get to work? Today is Work Together Wednesday! Show us how you and your family do work around the house together.   You can teach your children how to be responsible with money by giving them an opportunity to manage it on their own from a young age. One way to do this is to give kids a chance to earn an allowance by doing chores. Children should have chores that they don't get paid for, said Mary Ellen Re...

From Ms. Maria in Pathfinders:

Here our WOYC for the Tasty Tuesday package!

We read: Wangari's trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter ( for big kids like Andrea) Wangari Maathi was a Kenyan environmentalist who won a Nobel Prize.

We read: Elmer by David McKee ( for little one like Victoria) It's story about the beauty of being ourselves.

We did African Meat Pie (beef empanadas) by Immaculate Bites (

Hugs, Ms. Maria

A message from Ms. Lesly in infants...
"Today I made a Venezuelan breakfast, the name is Tequeños. It is the traditional food in my country, we can serve at breakfast, and parties or any moment and it is delicious!"

Here is the recipe!

1 lb of semi-hard queso blanco (white cheese)
2 cups of all-purpose flour
5 tablespoons of butter
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of sugar
4-5 tablespoons of cold water
4 cups of corn oil

1 · Prepare cheese by cutting into strips approximately ¾ inch by 2 ¾ inches long.·
2 Place flour on large flat surface; shape into circle with hole in center. Combine egg and butter in hole. Mixsalt, sugar and cold water together in small bowl. Add mixture slowly to flour, combining everything with hands. Keep mixing and kneading until dough is no longer sticky. When ready, shape into a ball and let it rest 1/2 hour at room temperature.·
3 Scatter flour on a clean, flatsurface. After 1/2 hour has passed, place dough ball on surface and roll into asquare approximately 1/8 inch thick. Using a sharp knife, cut the flatteneddough into long uniform strips until there is one strip for each piece of cheese.
4 Place a piece of queso blanco at one end of the first strip and roll it up until it is completely covered by dough. Make sure to press any open edges together to seal cheese in the dough completely, so that it does not leak out when it is fried. Repeat this with the rest of the cheese pieces.·
5 Heat the oil in a frying pan over a high flame. Once the oil is hot, lower the flame to a medium setting. Carefully, fry the tequeños until golden brown and crunchy.·
6 As you remove tequeños from oil, place on pieces of paper towels to absorb any excess oil.·
7 Time to eat!

How to Homeschool During the Coronavirus Pandemic

[Jamie Heston, a board member of the Homeschool Association of California] recommends designating some time to teach your children "real life" activities, like cooking, gardening, and sewing. "Ask your children what they’d like to learn," she says. "Self-directed learning is the best. What is your child passionate about? Learning doesn’t only happen with a book at a desk." First, don't feel bad that you are not adequately prepared for this crisis—most of us aren't.

For parents, happiness is a very high bar

This can be a great resource for each of us providing comfort and meaning to parents who may be struggling at this time. How parents define happiness? - this talk is 18 minutes. The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming -- it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents -- to raise happy children -- is so elusive. In...
