We are a Reggio Emilia inspired early childhood school located in Ashburn, Virginia serving children aged 6 weeks through 12 years old. Through the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach, children are given the tools and support to steer through their own distinct paths of discovery.
Our project-based curriculum encourages children to be active participants in the learning process and to develop the skills needed to explore their ideas, interests, and questions in a meaningful way.
Operating as usual
Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss, and happy Read Across America Day! We had a lovely zoom meet-up with our neighbors, the residents from Waltonwood Senior Center, and enjoyed listening to our favorite Dr. Seuss books. We hope you like our wacky character costumes!
[02/26/21] Clubhouse friends recreated instruction on pattern and collage from their LCPS remote-learning art classes on their brand-new white board in class yesterday! We love the use of colors and attention-to-detail in this piece.
Even as the snow and ice melts with climbing temperatures, our twos have shown so much interest they found the last few pieces outside to paint with watercolor. What artists!
Our Twos' friends practiced their morning commute with cars and snow taken from the playground during their transportation exploration!
Since the weather wasn't conducive to get outside, Sound Stage (JK/K) friends brought the snow and ice inside! In their classroom sensory bin, they enjoyed measuring, scooping, and pouring with shovels and buckets to create castles. Later, they even tried lighting them up with flashlights!
We had a wonderful teacher workday today and we're so ready to get back into the classroom tomorrow with some fresh ideas!
Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!
Friendly reminder that Compass Ashburn is closed on President's Day, Monday, February 15, for our bi-annual teacher workday!
We had a fun-filled week celebrating love and friendship, and we're so ready to party this afternoon! Happy early Valentine's Day, Compass families 🥰
Our Pre-K, kindergarten, and school-age groups experimented with height and creative lettering on their Love Mail boxes! We love the use of color.
Our preschool rooms (3s) had very different takes on decorating their Love Mail boxes! While Think Tankers kept it minimal with handprints, Nature Center friends enjoyed color mixing with reds, pinks, and purples.
Our infants, toddlers, and two year olds went super colorful with their love mail boxes this year! We love how classrooms incorporated their students' names, handprints, and pictures in their art.
Our Love Mail Station is up and running! Stay tuned next week, as we count down to Valentine's Day, with daily close-up details of all our friends' hard work.
Don't forget to come see it yourself between Feb 8-12 to celebrate love and leave a few notes for your children, teachers and staff members, too!
Thank you so much to the Golden family, who joined us yesterday to celebrate Groundhog Day with a book, cookies, and a reenactment of Phil seeing his shadow. Six more weeks of winter, here we come!
It's a snowy day at Compass, and we're loving it!
Join us next Friday, February 5, wearing your favorite jersey in celebration of Superbowl Sunday!
As our friends in Pathfinders (toddlers) wrap up their exploration of the five senses this week, they incorporated social-emotional exploration by using gentle touch with baby dolls. How cute!
Today we celebrate the opening of a new Pre-K room, Adventurers, with Miss Sadaf leading the charge. We hope everyone enjoys the new space as much as our friends already are!
Although it's better in person, if you can't make it to our gallery walk today, experience it here! We have such thoughtful students, teachers, and families, who truly understand the spirit of today's holiday.
When there's a global pandemic, you find other ways to travel - like Art Studio (pre-k) studying All Around the World this month.
Join us Monday, Jan 18, between 3-6pm, for a social-distancing-friendly event during your afternoon pick-up: "I Have A Dream" Day art gallery walk at Compass! As we learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr. this week, we plan to honor his memory and message with meaningful pieces of art to display. Additionally, contribute to our "dream" walk with wishes for your own children's futures!
Learning about the different parts of the car (and what you need to drive it) in their transportation unit, our Inventor's Workshop friends (twos) are ready to ride!
Working on cause and effect in infants, we enjoyed building blocks up in order to knock them down on the count of 3! Of course, everyone had a blast with this idea.
Learning about the five senses, our Pathfinders (toddler) friends have incorporated a light table to observe light and shadow! They used translucent shapes in their exploration today.
Sound Stage and Clubhouse friends put on their repairman hats today to fix an old hamster ball for our gerbil, Poppy, to get some exercise! She loved exploring in the plaza.
Learning about Kwanzaa this week, our Think Tank friends used red, green, and black materials to exercise their fine motor skills while making necklaces today!
Welcome back, Compass Families! We hope everyone had an amazing long weekend. Judging by Art Studio's weekend stories - where children dictate what they did, trace the sentence, and then illustrate - we sure did!
Happy holidays! This is a quick reminder that Compass is closed Thursday, December 24, and Friday, December 25. We look forward to seeing everyone Monday when we re-open! Be safe and stay merry, friends and family.
Thank you, parents, for sharing your holiday traditions with us! Your decorations truly brought life to our tree this year. 🎄
Compass' first snow! We were so excited to get outside today.
Have you seen this Gingerbread? We are still on the lookout and receiving letters from all over the world with news of sightings!
In Sound Stage (Kindergarten), we are on the hunt for the Gingerbread Man! After reading several versions of the story, they found a note inside as well as a letter from a family member of a gingerbread sighting in New Jersey! They finished out their morning making gingerbread cookies as they formulated a plan together for catching him. Good luck, friends!
The holiday spirit has hit in our infant rooms as our little ones explore many different and new materials!
Think Tank (preschool) has the right idea when we say Compass is an "all-weather" school! Within reason, rain, snow, or shine: we love to be outside!
Don't forget: in observance of the holiday, Compass School will be closed for the long weekend! See you on Monday, November 30. 🦃
We are so proud to donate all these canned goods for those in need this holiday season!
