ADHD Awareness Month is celebrated every October to help people living with ADHD get more support.

For children diagnosed with ADHD, school presents a unique set of challenges. A disorder characterized by an inability to focus and concentrate, hyperactivity and impulsivity, ADHD can transform the classroom into a place where students feel lost, uncomfortable and lack confidence.

Here at Huntington, our tutoring for kids with ADHD has helped children of all ages, from kindergarten through 12th grade, to excel and overcome these challenges! 💯

Fall is synonymous with pumpkins, but have you ever wondered why we're all so obsessed with these gourds? 🎃

The main reason people feel such a strong connection to pumpkins has to do with the nostalgia we feel about the fall season itself.

Because of the pumpkin's prevalence in fall activities, you associate pumpkins or pumpkin-filled baked goods with the memories that the fall season creates each and every year.

Pumpkin Spice Latte anyone? ☕

While extracurricular activities are a factor in college admissions, they are definitely not the most important—academic performance is!

Course selection is a very BIG part of college admissions, so don’t let your teens drop out of a higher-level course if they are struggling. Get tutoring help with Huntington as early in the school year as possible.

When it comes to extracurriculars, colleges prefer quality over quantity. Admissions officers want to see that students are involved in activities that really matter to them.

So, instead of telling your children to sign up for every club or activity possible, encourage them to choose extracurriculars to which they will be committed. It’s better to be engaged in and excited about three or four activities than it is to be a member of eight or nine.

Learn more about what colleges look for in extracurricular activities in our blog:

Not all high school students know exactly what they want to study in college and do for the rest of their lives.

While it’s fine to go to college undecided on a major, it’s also okay to choose an option that is broad and versatile and will keep multiple doors open down the road. 🚪

Here are five college majors for undecided students that will give them options:

1. Business
2. Biology
3. Liberal Arts
4. Computer Science
5. Communications

To read more about these options, check out our blog post:

Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer! It has far-reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others.

Living your life with gratitude helps you notice the little wins, such as the bus showing up right on time or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning.

Helping your children practice gratitude can make them notice the little things too, like doing better from exam to exam, being able to solve a problem on their own, or the kindness from another sharing a toy or snack.

Here are three ways to practice gratitude with your child:

1. Set an example - We provide the blueprint for what our children say and do. Expressing gratitude yourself through words, writing, and acts of reciprocity are all ways to teach children how to become grateful.

2. Spend quality time - Believe it or not, children and, yes, even teens, like being with their parents. Sharing a lot of quality time with your children teaches them the language of love—life’s greatest gift. Savor every moment together, big and small, and rid yourself of distractions, including your smartphone.

3. Get involved - Giving and gratitude go hand in hand. Look for ways to volunteer together or let your child pick a charity to give back to.

How do you practice gratitude with your child?

When they enrolled her in Huntington in February 2022, she was reading at a second-grade level even though she was in fourth grade. After only eight months of tutoring, Avianna’s MAP assessment scores show her reading is in the 77th percentile for her grade, and she is in the 91st percentile in growth over the past year! We are SO proud of Avianna’s hard work and achievements! 🎉📚

Here's a fall science fact for ! Fall leaf colors depend on how much sugar is in the leaves. 🍂

These colors are caused by certain pigments in the leaves, and different kinds of trees produce different pigments.
When you notice leaves that are purple and red, that's caused by the "anthocyanins" pigment, which is only produced in the fall when sugars are trapped in the leaves.

Lots of dry weather and sunlight will lead to more sugars in the leaves, meaning the leaves will be brighter red.
What is your favorite fall leaf color to see?

🧠 Your child relies on memory to learn, but there are different types of memory that come into play during different school situations.

Working memory is defined by Psychology Today as “a form of memory that allows a person to temporarily hold a limited amount of information at the ready for immediate mental use.”

It is critical for all kinds of mental processes and for learning new things.

There are several ways to build and strengthen the working memory: reading, playing memory-based games, breaking larger tasks into more manageable chunks, or even having your child repeat things back to you.

For more tips on improving your child's working memory, read the full blog post here:

Are you excited it's apple picking season? 🍎 If you wanted to make one gallon of delicious cider, you would need to pick 36 apples during your family outing. That's a whole lot of fruit!

Here's another fun fact about the most purchased fruit in the country. It takes an apple tree four to five years to produce its first fruit!

What do you like to make using the apples you pick? Share in the comments.

Parents, be honest. Did you and your child use the summer break to work on school issues from the past year, or did the months slip by before you were able to deal with these challenges? 💭

As the school year begins, make sure to put a plan in place to close any skill gaps, deal with any lingering academic problems, and talk with your child’s teacher about past issues.

Things to discuss with your child’s teacher:

✏️ Support that your child might need in the classroom.

✏️ Any accommodations set forth in your child’s 504 plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

✏️ Concerns you have about the school year (e.g., things that have been issues in the past, such as poor grades or low motivation).

✏️ Tutoring outside of school with Huntington to provide the personalized attention your child needs, and other ways you can support your child at home.

To learn more about how to make this school year successful, read our full blog post here:

Transitioning to a new school can be difficult for children with ADHD.

Whether your child is starting at a new school because of a family move or because the old school wasn’t a good fit, extra support from parents, teachers, and a therapist and/or school counselor can make the adjustment as smooth as possible.

If your child struggled academically or socially at a previous school, a new school may bring a welcome fresh start. ✨

There were some people on a train. 🚆

At the first stop, 19 people get off the train and 17 people get on the train.

Now there are 63 people on the train.

How many people were on the train to begin with?
