Incredible time at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center for EARTH DAY today!

Got to grab my favorite Girl Scout cookies (thin mints) from the Tri-Town Service Unit, who are raising funds for a trip to Roger Williams Zoo in RI.

Also- got to check out sunspots though a homemade sunspot viewer (I can still see!) and went back in time to 1774 with CT’s 6th Regiment.

Big congratulations and thanks to our Nature Center staff, making wonderful things happen for Ansonia and Valley residents.

It was wonderful to see so many people having fun today at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center’s Earth Day Fair. The weather was perfect, the kids were all smiles, and the vendors had some amazing crafted items to share with us! To all the organizers and volunteers: Nicely done, and thank you! 💜🌎

Reminder Scouts and families, this Saturday from 10am-3pm Pack 51 will be at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center earth day event. Up-cycle an old honey bottle into a colorful, mesmerizing sensory jar for your “beary-special” someone this Valentine’s Day (or make one just for fun!). Supplies are provided, but you are welcome to bring small odds and ends, such as beads and buttons, if you’d like. This will be a fun day to share with your family and friends! Miss Jen had a wonderful time meeting new little friends at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center's "Nature's Explorers" program, where she read the classic October tale, "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything". 🍁 🍂 🍁

What a beautiful day to enjoy Harvest Fest at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center! A special thanks to Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro for coming to enjoy some time in the community, supporting local vendors and chatting with residents.

We both picked up some maple syrup tapped and made right here in Ansonia, and hand-made ceramic garlic graters! It was great to see so many members of our community out enjoying the day. 💜

Yet another great mom in nature is the mother skunk. She raises her young alone. She stays in her burrow with them until they are ready to forage. They form a line behind her on their evening outings. 🦨

Happy Mother’s Day!!! A hard working mother in nature is the hummingbird!! She builds a tiny nest made of spider webs and lichens. She hatches her eggs and tends her babies with no help from her mate. She is dedicated and works non stop to raise her babies!

Another great mother in nature is the Virginia Opossum. Her babies are born only with 12 days of gestation. They then migrate to the mothers pouch where they spend 2-4 months on one ni**le, growing in a dark, moist pouch. She will then carry them on her back teaching them to find good.

Did you know that Raccoons are wonderful mothers of nature? *Their babies are completely reliant on their mother for the first months of their lives.
*The mother raccoon has multiple den sites that she will move her babies to if she feels threatened.
*She will often hunt during the day to feed her litter.

Our Story

Once an active dairy farm, the 156 acre Ansonia Nature Center landscape encompasses 8 distinct habitats: mature hardwoods, white pine woodlands, fields and meadows, and several wetland habitats. We also have a 2 acre pond. The Schumacher Pavilion was constructed in 1977 in a unique star shape, featuring local Connecticut stone. It houses many exhibits, and provides space for our "Animal Ambassadors". The visitor center is also the hub of the park, with classrooms, a nature store, a small natural history library, and office space. Ansonia Nature Center is open year ‘round, from sun up to sun down. Building hours vary with the season, and it is closed on Federal holidays. Entrance to the park and to the Visitor Center are FREE.
