LCCC Allentown Literacy Volunteer Tutors

· Work with students whose reading or math scores are too low to start classes

·Work with students who score too high to enter classes

· Work with students who may be close to getting their high school equivalency diploma

· Work with students who need help advancing to the next class

· Work as in-class tutors

· Lead small tutoring groups for students who are not able to be in classes for various reasons

· Work with ESL students who need additional help with conversation, reading, or writing

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Attend volunteer orientation and initial training (in person)

· Complete tutor training modules provided by the tutor coordinator (online)

· Complete and submit clearance paperwork and proof of bachelor’s degree

· Attend initial tutor introduction meeting with the student and tutor coordinator

· Tutor student(s) either individually or in a small group for a minimum of three hours per week

· Serve as a classroom aide in GED or ESL classes if needed

· Work with the tutor coordinator to help prepare lessons and materials

· Communicate with tutor coordinator on how tutoring sessions are advancing

· Complete monthly attendance paperwork

· Participate in professional development by attending training provided by the tutor coordinator (via webinars and in person)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s degree in any field

· Ability to make the time commitment of 3 hours per week to tutor.

· Attainment of clearances

· Completion of tutor log at the end of every month

SCHEDULE

· 3 hour minimum weekly commitment

· Flexible schedule based on tutors’ and students’ availability for one-on-one tutoring

· Fixed class schedule (day and/or night) for small group tutors and classroom aides

WORK LOCATION:

Location will depend on the role a volunteer plays and the agency that he/she is assigned for. All Literacy Center tutors will work at the Literacy Center located at 1132 Hamilton St #300, Allentown, PA 18101. LCCC classroom aides and small group tutors will work on campus located at 718 Hamilton St, Allentown, PA 18101 while one-on-one tutors will meet with students at the Allentown Public Library located at 1210 Hamilton St, Allentown, PA 18102 or at any other public place that will be determined by a tutor and a student and approved by the tutor coordinator.
