A customer came in today and looked at daughter Sage’s photo of old insulators, and told me his grandfather used to work for a utility company. He revealed that the colors in the glass weren’t there just to look pretty; insulators were color-coded according to the voltage of the wires running along them. Interesting factoid!

I started painting on tiny 2x2” canvases! The canvas wraps around a wooden frame just like the big ones. I was in a cloudy kind of mood! Hope you like them.

So I decided to look back at the pix I’ve posted, and I never posted any of my tiles! To follow my last post of the new tiles I’m doing, I thought it would be smart to post some of my finished tiles so you’d know where I’m going with them.

I’m playing with clay again and it truly makes me happy! I’ve said it before, Clay is magic! This semester at MCCC, I’m taking Special Studies in Ceramics, an independent studio. Auditing it, of course, because I have a GPA of 4.0! I don’t want to mess that up! Don’t be too impressed, tho. I accidentally registered for credit a few years ago, for Raku, and the A is from that. Now I want to maintain my average so it’s audit from now on! This is the start of my 6th year at Mercer. Five years of magic clay and wonderful, creative people! My soul is there! I will be working with white clay this semester, but first have to finish with the rest of my studio clay. I’m making a few more tiles. These are pix of two, which have been carved and are ready for their first firing. I’ll be painting them with underglazes, my thing to do. Hopefully I’ll remember to post when they’re done!

If you like soap (and who doesn't?!), please come visit the shop this month to see the selection made by our featured artist! Gail Hillman makes the best soap out of the finest ingredients. Sage and I have been buying her soap for years, stocking up on her beautiful and fun-shapes to use year round. Gail is my "Soap Lady" and I was so happy to find out she lives in Allentown! And even more happy when she brought in such a wonderful assortment! I especially love the cupcakes, each in a reusable cupcake holder. The "soapsickles" are sweetly scented and look yummy. She's made adorable bundt cakes! And if you're looking for a special little Valentine gift, she's made heart-shaped soaps with flowers on top, which you can present to your sweetie on a heart soapdish in an organza gift bag! Gail's soap smells great and lasts a long time. Come in and see them! You won't be disappointed!

Well, guess what? We are opening our shop this Saturday, 14 October! Lots more to do, more art coming, need a new sign, etc. So much finished yet still so much left to go! It won't all be done for our opening, but the place is looking pretty awesome. I am just thrilled with the quality and creativity of the art and craft my friends are consigning! I'm not kidding when I say they are awe-inspiring! I want to shop in our own shop! The Allentown Fall Festival is this Saturday and Sunday. If you like festivals, this is a good one. If you'd rather avoid crowds, come next week, 11-6 Wednesday thru Saturday, Sunday 12-4. I'll have more info soon on classes and workshops. Our shop is at 42 S. Main St. Allentown, NJ. Follow the drive down behind the mill, all the way to the parking area. We're at the back, in the middle of three buildings. (PS: you won't be able to park there during the Festival) Please come visit!!

My poor neglected page! I haven't written much in a while, and, clearly, I need to update my status. And it just so happens I have news!!! On October 14th, we are opening a shop! It's in Allentown NJ, on the property of the old mill. The mill sits right at the street as you go by the millpond. The shop is at the back, on the way to the parking lot. It's a lovely spot!
We are opening as part of the Old Mill Crafters Guild, and we'll be showing and selling work by the four of us, as well as by other local artists and craftspeople. We are connected to and working with the existing shop, owned by two creative women. We will be offering classes and workshops in art and craft, with a little music to round it out. It'll be a nice place to gather and learn.
If you know me, you know I have never stopped learning and I know how to do many, many things. I want to share what I know, and I love to teach! Kyle is a graduate of the University of the Arts and had taught children's art classes for several years. He has some ideas for what workshops he'd like to offer. Sage is an art education major at The College of New Jersey, and she is student-teaching art this semester. She is already an excellent teacher! Next summer, she wants to teach art to children and teens. Ken is a musician as well as an artist. He has a few music tech and instrument classes planned. I'm already speaking to other artists who will show the skills and techniques they have mastered.
We intend to offer interesting and unusual classes, unlike what you may find available elsewhere. We'd also like to teach what you'd like to know. Do you have anything you've been wanting to learn? It can be craft-, art-, or music-related. Leave me a comment! And if we don't know how it's done, we can probably find someone who does.
We'll have small classes, usually three to eight students, with a teacher and an assistant. Classes will generally be taught as 2-3 hour workshops, allowing you to learn something in one session. You don't necessarily have to commit to weeks of classes, although we may offer a few of those, too. It would help to know what days and times are good for you, if you're interested in taking something. (I hope you are!)
It'll be a great place to shop, too. We'll have many handmade gifts, one-of-a-kind art, photography, greeting cards, home dec, and jewelry, and more!
Please let me know if you'd like to join the Guild, consign your work, take a class, or teach a class!
I've been looking to have an opportunity to do this for years. It's finally happening! I'm working with great people and my whole family is involved. It couldn't be a better situation! I hope you'll at least visit. Please check back with this page for updates.
