13 - Green Eggs _ Ham.mp4

When is it ok to change your mind about disliking something even if you have never tried it? When it involves green eggs and ham, of course! And here is a handy tip; your child may be more likely to try a new food if he or she helps to prepare it. Green eggs and ham may seem outrageous, but that is exactly what makes it so fun. Opportunities to help in the kitchen are a terrific way to teach your child about making healthy choices and enjoying new challenges, and this snack will not disappoint in either area.

-2 eggs
-Slice of cooked ham
-Green food coloring
-Boiling water

-Cooking pot

1. Place eggs in boiling water until cooked
2. Peel eggs
3. Cut eggs long ways
4. Take out the cooked yolk
5. Mix green food coloring with yolk
6. Spoon green yolk back into the eggs
7. Warm ham in microwave if you prefer

Literacy Connection: Why not introduce some new ways of thinking about how an experience can help shape a person’s beliefs with the classic Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. It’s just plain fun to read, but it also illustrates an important idea about how people can make judgements based on opinions, and sometimes those opinions can change!

Talking Counts - Kids 'R' Kids

Most words in a child’s vocabulary come from everyday encounters with language. Children pick up language from books, media, and conversations with the people in their lives. You can increase your child’s vocabulary and background knowledge — two important pieces of the reading puzzle — by having conversations with them. Giving children a rich language environment is one of the best ways to build a foundation for reading success. Read more in our blog:

Being Kind - Kids 'R' Kids

What does it mean to a child when you say, “be kind?”

As parents, our words are not relatable to a child without attaching an action. To teach our children to be kind to themselves and others, we must first show them what kindness means.

12 - Chocolate Covered Pretzels.mp4

What better way to encourage acts of kindness than with chocolate covered pretzel sticks to give away? While preparing them, you can ask your child to guess how long it may take to melt the chocolate. All the fun of measuring, stirring, and sprinkling decorations will be even more worthwhile when you surprise a favorite person with this sweet snack as a gift!

-Pretzel rods
-Chocolate melts (any flavor)
-Glass to melt chocolates
-Spoon to stir chocolate
-Sprinkles (your choice)
-Cookie Sheet
-Wax paper

1. Melt chocolate in 30 second increments, stir in between.
2. Dip and roll pretzel in the glass of melted chocolate
3. Lay on cookie sheet
4. Shake on sprinkles
5. Put in freezer for 10 to 15 minutes to cool
Literacy Connection: "Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch" by Eileen Spinelli is a sweet story that shows how simple acts of kindness can transform a person in powerful ways.

It is designed to supplement the First Class Curriculum® by incorporating science, technology, engineering, art, and math into learning through inquiry, exploration, and play.

The STEAM Ahead® approach addresses key components of learning that parents, educators, and employers have deemed crucial for children to thrive once they enter the 21st century workforce.
