We are thrilled to have this beautiful Christmas tree sculpture, made by Shawn Olson and donated by Bruce and Chris Steinhagen, installed at Christmas Tree Ship Point.
Because of the harsh environment at the point, we’ve had a hard time getting real trees to grow there. This steel sculpture is the perfect addition to help community members and visitors know of the rich maritime history of Algoma, including that of the Christmas Tree schooners that delivered Christmas trees to the big cities of Milwaukee and Chicago.
In the fall of 2019, we had a devastating storm that destroyed the beautiful landscaping that was done at this park. This month we will be putting things back together by installing the benches, a new sign honoring the Christmas tree ships that passed the point and new grass and plants.
We love the new tree and hope that you do too!

We’d like the thank the students from Algoma’s Elementary and Middle School for all their efforts in picking up pieces of garbage, big and small, along our shore line today.
Because the beach groomer does a great job in picking up the larger pieces of debris, the students we able to focus on the little stuff. And there was a lot of it! 50 lbs! (Including some bags that’s had a lot of sand in it that made it extra heavy.)
We’re grateful for the students, their teachers, the Friends of Crescent Beach, the City crew and all the other community members that pick up litter and make our beach a beautiful place to be. 🏖

We’d like to thank the Algoma Utility Commission for awarding the Parks and Recreation Department the WPPI Grant. We used the funds to purchase a swinging bench that was installed in front of the Youth Club.
We hope many community members and visitors enjoy sitting on it as they take in our amazing view of Crescent Beach and Lake Michigan. 🌅

Whacky Weather Wednesdays is getting kind of ridiculous! Sadly, things do not look good for us to have tball tonight. We are going to cancel. We know that the kids are excited to play and we couldn’t be any more disappointed.
With the field usage opening up because of the Little League seasons coming to an end, we are going to look into seeing if we can possibly get two practices in a week to make up for all these bad weather days. Stay tuned!

They’re doing a great job playing with the kids and preparing lots of fun activities. We would also like to thank Madeline Prokash for putting together all the schedule of activities this year.
The Summer Park Program runs Monday-Thursday, noon-3 with free lunch served from 12:15-12:45. Come outside and play with us!

After assessing the situation at the ball field and considering the cold temps and wind, we’ve decided to postpone tonight’s practice and add it to the end of the session. We polled a handful of parents and the consensus was that no one would really enjoy playing out in this weather. Everyone cross your fingers that next Wednesday will be beautiful so we can get these kids playing ball! ⚾️

With the storm water redesign project in 2020, we had to remove the small pavilion in front of the Youth Club. It was in poor condition and could not be salvaged. We had observed that this space was one of the most used park pavilions in the city. Many visitors and community members used this space to enjoy a picnic by the water or just relax under ther shade. We would like to offer an area near the north end of the parking lot in front of the Youth Club for people to enjoy again.
We have private donors pledging over $7,000, and a couple of grants and funds totaling $3,000. We need about $5,000 more to make to make it to our goal. Donations or memorials over $700.00 would be recognized on plaque placed by the shade structure.
If you would like to contribute to this project please call Sara Robertson at 920-487-5480.
(Photo is an example of the shade structure we would be installing along with two metal picnic tables.)

Things are looking a little green! Not only is the grass in our parks greening up from the rain but maybe you have also noticed the duckweed in the Ahnapee River and along the lakeshore. Even though it looks alarming, the duckweed plant is a normal part of the ecosystem.
There are actually quite a few benefits of duckweed. It provides a high-protein food source for waterfowl, as well as cover for many aquatic species. Duckweed is even being studied by researchers around the world as a possible source of clean energy. And not that we’re suggesting it, but duckweed can be eaten by humans, as they do eat it in some parts of Southeast Asia.
The duckweed won’t be here long term. Like last year, it was only around for a few weeks.
