Tried to save an old apple tree today using bridge grafting. In the photo, you can see that the center of the tree has rotted out and has no support on one side. We put in 4 bridge grafts that will hopefully take, grow larger and help hold the tree together. The grafts are circled in green.

Hello Facebook friends and ASC alumni!
As some of you may know, we are planning some major changes to the Ag program and the farm at Alfred State. This summer we will be downsizing, but not eliminating, our dairy operation. This downsizing is to make room for a herd of registered Black Angus cattle, which we will start with the help of alumnus Phil Trowbridge of Trowbridge Farms. Our plan is to develop a world-class group of beef animals that we can use for teaching and showing. In addition, we plan to begin a herd of high quality meat goats, so that we can offer our students the opportunity to learn small ruminant management also. To make room for these additions, we will be selling part of our registered Holstein dairy herd. Because we understand that this may cause some of our students and alumni concern, we want to assure everyone that we are not getting out of the dairy business; we will continue to have a registered Holstein dairy herd. The herd will be smaller, but it will retain the best of the historic bloodlines of our current herd; students will continue to be involved in their daily management, breeding, feeding, and showing. Please feel free to stop by the farm any time and see the progressive changes we continue to make and rest assured that ASC is committed to the future of agriculture and the development of tomorrow’s Ag leaders. In fact, we have submitted two new degree programs to SUNY for approval. We plan to offer a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Entrepreneurship and an associate’s degree in Agricultural Automation and Robotics as soon as the fall of 2018.

Many thanks to Jennifer Kessler, James Embser, Lindsey Crisanti and Leah Helm for mapping some maple trees on the College Farm this semester. Perhaps in the future we can add to this map and plan for a maple syrup production course!

Free plants to the first person who guesses the identities of the plants in the pictures!

Can you guess the name of each plant pictured?

A group of students in Botany this semester grew plants in the hydroponics lab in the greenhouse. They are holding a competition. Guess the identities of the plants in the picture - get all the plants. Or, if you'd rather, an Alfred State travel coffee mug.

Can you guess the name of each plant pictured?

Made soil blocks in Veggie class this week. This method uses wet growing media (that we mixed up ourselves) and forms it into a "soil block." Seeds are then planted into the indentations on the top. The blocks are kept moist until transplant. No need for pots and plants do not become root bound.

Found some galls on the oak tree outside the Ag building. We cut them open in lab and found the gall insects inside! Galls are the plant's response to the insect laying eggs on or in its cells. The insects take advantage of this growth by living in it and feeding on it. You can see an adult (left) and a larvae (right).
