Some of the tax/legal issues of paid vs. unpaid internships are posted here. A more relevant issue for recruiters - the best students get paid internships, ranging from $9/hr. to $30/hr., in my experience.

How Much Are Financial Advisors Getting Paid?
While the answer varies a GREAT DEAL depending on where you firm is located (upscale market vs. mass market, region of the country) and what type of firm you are in - and how good your firm is at client acquisition, this recent article shares some insights:
In larger RIA firms:
Senior Advisors: $218,600 (but another survey says $145,000)
Mid-Level Advisors: $103,250
Associate Advisor (new hire): $71,250.
I would caution, however, that in western New York State most of our graduates (as to those who stay in this area) are receiving compensation packages of $30,000 to $50,000, plus incentives (bonuses), if salaried. Those who work on a commission basis report either very low compensation their first year ($10,000, after expenses) or very high compensation ($75,000+).
One thing is certain - as the market has rebounded and is now at new highs, advisor compensation has increased in recent years.
financial-planning.com At the highest- performing firms, incentive pay and equity are becoming key components of advisor compensation.

As this article points out, millenials need mentors. Would you like to volunteer to serve as a mentor to one of our Financial Planning Program students? What's involved - three phone calls (or, if in the same area, perhaps short meetings) a year, to discuss career path advice, networking, "life in the day of a financial planner," etc. Or, perhaps one of our students can shadow you for a day. If interested, please contact Asst. Prof. Ron Rhoades, [email protected]. Thank you.
