Heavy on the music theory again!

Abby is learning her key signatures and scale degrees.

I called out 3 triads for her to figure out in each key and now things are coming full circle.

03/21/2022

When in doubt, tap it out! 👏👏👏

Whenever students struggle with rhythm, we always take time to tap it out the rhythm before we play.

It’s one of many ways that we incorporate and break down music theory!

Rhythm is an essential quality to music. Good musicians understand that without it there essentially is no music, only sounds. 🎶🎶🎶

Our first recital of 2022 is coming up! 🎶

Take a look at what our students have been up to on Saturday March 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Did you know that I take online piano lessons too? My younger students are always amazed when I say that. I was able to meet with my teacher, again this semester. He always sheds light on areas of improvement which I am able to use here at TLS.

This piece is called “A Taste of Bass” from Portraits in Jazz by Valerie Capers. The piece was inspired by Ron Carter, “whose solos and rhythm work had a profound effect on bassists after the 60’s.” It features the left hand and is a great intermediate level piece.

Valerie Capers was born in 1935, and was introduced to music through her father’s ties to Fats Waller (American Jazz Pianist), and her brother’s performances in the Mongo Santamaria Band.  She received her early education at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music, with Bachelors and Masters degrees. Capers brings a wide scope of pianistic styles and concepts to her playing, drawing from jazz idols and keyboard masters alike.

Meet singer, songwriter, & Worship Leader Victoria. Vic is one of our adult piano students here at TLS. She started bi-weekly lesson in Jan 2022. Vic said, “I didn’t think I’d be playing songs this soon.” Well, you are Miss Mamas and I’m so proud of you ! I’m even more amazed that she’s multitasking bc playing and singing is indeed a task. Y’all show her some love in the comments. Baby girl got pipes and piano skills.

Dont let other people's projections stop you from doing what you know in your heart that you can do.☺️

It does not matter what age you are. If you want to learn the piano you can.

For older students with jobs it will take some planning so that you can have time in your schedule for lessons and adequate practice time.

At The Lewanika School we encourage our adult students to choose a time that works for their schedule for lessons.

We work together to build a routine that works so that they can become the piano player they want to be.

Miles Davis was arguably one of the most influential jazz musicians in American history.

He was known as a monumental innovator, icon, and maverick.

Trumpeter Miles Davis helped define the course of jazz as well as popular culture in the 20th century, bridging the gap between bebop, modal music, funk, and fusion.

His career spanned almost 50 years.

What's your favorite love song??

P.S. Check our stories today for some of our faves 💕

Hazel Scott, jazz singer, pianist and the first Black woman to host her own tv show.

Scott said she knew she had talent from a young age. She was able to play piano by ear at age three.

By the time she was a teenager, Scott was already performing professionally.

Not only a talented artist she also took a stand against racial prejudice. She was one of the first performers to refuse to play before segregated audiences.

Today's Black History icon: Duke Ellington.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra.

Ellington wrote or collaborated on more than one thousand compositions.

A pivotal figure in the history of jazz, he was also thought of as one of the most significant composers of the time.

Ellington used his music to showcase black excellence as a resistance tactic against the negative stereotypes of African Americans.

He was among the first musicians to celebrate his race and proudly use the word “Black” in many of his song titles.
