"THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW"!
Last night our father Herbert DeWalt went to live with the Lord. He has been attending Immanuel since the late 40's and been a member since 1952. Has lived a long fulfilling life of 96 years. He was a good father to me and my brother Mike, a good father-in-law to John and grandfather to Kailtyn and John- Mark
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA frequently has chaplains in its pews because of its close proximity to the Pentagon and so many military bases. It's a mutual blessing - both for those on military orders to have a place to worship and find fellowship with other LCMS Lutherans, but for the church to have these men in its midst as well. Thanks to Chaplain Jonathan Shaw for arranging this photo after service on Sunday.

Dear Saints of Immanuel,

The deacons are organizing a coffee hour for Pastor Rogness’s last Sunday this Sunday, August 13. If you are in town, I want to personally encourage you to join after church and bid farewell to the whole Rogness Family.

Would you please also bring a food item to add to the celebration? Fruit, chips, dip, cheese, crackers, tea sandwiches, donuts, cookies - from scratch or store bought - would all be welcome additions. We are asking each family to consider bringing one appetizer or dessert and join in the farewell. Please leave your food contributions in the church kitchen counter, warmer, or refrigerator on Sunday morning. Thank you for helping us thank Pastor Rogness for his years of faithful service to us.

In Christ,
Aaron Lewis

Property Update
The Trustees report good news on the status of the church property. The elevator is working and the issues with the AC are resolved. The church building is now fully functional.

The tree that impacted the school building has been removed except for the stump. The AC service company looked over the school's system; some parts will need to be replaced but their assessment is that the AC is working properly for the school.

Immanuel's Board of Trustees Chairman, Tyler Stone, spoke with TEEL construction, the structural engineer that helped build the school, and our insurance agent earlier this week. We are in the process of getting the brick repaired and roof fixed. We will have a better understanding of the remaining repairs needed once the damaged bricks have been removed.

Updated Schedule for Immanuel Lutheran Church on July 30, 2023 - Storms Damage Alexandria

Dear Saints of Immanuel Lutheran Church,

Alexandria experienced a severe storm this evening (July 29, 2023), causing significant damage around the neighborhood of Immanuel. Unfortunately, as you can see from the photos below, these damaging storms affected our school building and many of our neighbors.

Additionally, due to the power outages around Immanuel's neighborhood, there is currently no power to the air conditioning unit for the church building or the elevator.

What this means for tomorrow, Sunday, July 30, 2023, is:
1. SCRIPTURE STUDY IS CANCELLED.
2. The Divine Service will occur as usual, but please dress appropriately and bring water as desired, as the sanctuary will be warm. If you are susceptible to heat illnesses, please use good judgment and care.
3. Lastly, parking is limited due to the trees and power lines down on Bellaire Road. You may want to consider parking on another side street around Immanuel tomorrow.

If the situation at Immanuel changes before tomorrow morning, I will email an update to the congregation.

If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me.

Christ be with you and grant safety to those working to clear the damage and return power throughout our community.

In the peace of Christ Jesus,
Pastor Rogness

Sunday was First Communion Sunday for 12 young people in the congregation. Here's an explanation from the weekly newsletter about why Immanuel does First Communion on Laetare Sunday:

This Sunday, March 19, the Church observes Laetare Sunday. At Immanuel, it is also our practice to receive First Communion students to the rail on this day.

So, why First Communion on Laetare Sunday?

The word Laetare comes from Isaiah 66:10, the antiphon of the Introit for the day, and means, "Rejoice."

“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all you who love her; Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her; That you may feed and be satisfied with the consolation of her bosom, that you may drink deeply and be delighted with the abundance of her glory” (Isaiah 66:10-11, NKJV).

This theme of rejoicing mirrors Gaudete Sunday during Advent, and the vestments for the day will change from violet to rose to signify a brief reprieve or lessening of our Lenten discipline.

Further, the Gospel for this Sunday comes from John 6, the Feeding of the Five Thousand. This theme of Jesus' feeding is a reminder throughout our Lenten fasting that Jesus continues to feed us, poor sinners, with the Bread of Life.

And this is why we believe it is so fitting for the children of our congregation to be accepted to the altar and to receive their First Communion on this day. Because it not only teaches them but serves to remind us, as we journey through the trying days of life, that Jesus continues to care for and feed us with His Word and life.

Let us keep these children and their families in our prayers and rejoice with them this day! -Pastor Rogness
